Meant to mention this earlier.

How good was it to go a match by old protagonists at the G on QB Monday and have both teams in their correct jumpers?

On top of that ( where I was anyway )there were no fights, no Swearing in front of kids.

You sit with the opposition  supporters with   good nature banter and just to top it off not a face mask or flare in sight.

To be fair a face mask would be handy so as not to have to look at some of those Pie supporters.............

The so called dees supporter muppet bagging tmac all game on level 2 is a [censored] who doesn't know the game . Highlight was singing its a grand old flag in the tram !!

There was a Pies supporter near me who was giving Tom Phillips a serve at one point in the kid's first game. I really do wonder what the f is wrong with people sometimes.

The highlight for me  was the channel 7 captions when the Grand Ol Flag was being played audibly the words of the pies theme song were on the screen. WTF?  Seems someone got a bit ahead of themselves.

And I didnt see the boys in the circle belting out the song which is a feature of every other telecast.

When we are winning I don't find it a problem in fact I enjoy the sad defeated look of Pies supporters.

I reckon Hogan's approach for his third goal was the straightest and most fluent it has ever been. Normally I need to close my eyes when he starts to run in but for this shot I had 100% confidence it was going through.

It was bad!  Its rare for Roos to be really animated but he all but flew from his seat when it was called 'play on' with no free kick.

Haven't seen a replay...we probably won't - it might upset Nathan or Eddie:o.

I can't even... that was borderline reportable!

Couldn't believe it was play on. Absolute joke.

That Nicholl guy is a serious [censored]!

Yes. Those "away" jumpers should be disposed of forthwith. They are completely unnecessary. The umpires can easily see who is on which team. As for the TV and radio commentators- who cares? They mostly talk nonsense anyway.

I haven't seen a replay at all, but live it looked like a classic coathanger, which these days should cop 1-2 weeks.

I think we had the better of the umpiring. We got away with quite a few dodgy disposals, and a number of 50/50s went our way.

Had a Collingwood supporter behind me, amongst 90% Demon supporters. Half way through the last quarter, after a goal, the chants went up. His reply was 'why don't you all go buy finals tickets, ya flogs.'

Nobody felt the need to inform him that his attempted sledge just mad his team look even worse.

btw MCG staff were not letting Collingwood supporters into bays M1-2 (general admission next to the Demon cheer-squad) as the game got close to starting. They were even attempting to move Collingwood supporters that were already settled into their seats there.

Not sure what that was about.

I think we did in patches, especially part of the third, but they had the run of the umps int eh first, we couldn't get a free to save ourselves no matter what happened, and the rest was fairly even, except the free to Cox (I think) in the last couple of minutes in their goal square, he tangled legs with a Melbourne player, both fell over, he got a free, was astounding!

Frees 15 to 20 in their favour.  Also, as the old saying goes, it is not necessarily the frees which are given, it is often about when and where they are given.

Oliver also missed out on a blatant holding the ball 20m out in the last quarter.

They also missed out on Tyson's holding on the 50. If he grazed that with his leg then I couldn't see it, I have also seen far more obvious kicks paid as dropping. The ump was in a great spot to see it though.

Funny I felt sorry for him a couple of times during the game. He was clearly trying but it is game 1 for him and just thought he would be coping an earful from the Pies fans.

Righto, where to begin?

Started the game on the bottom level of the MCC with a North Melbourne mate of mine where we most unfortunate to have the most annoying and deafening Collingwood supporter (could be a tautology) in the form of a 10 year old boy. Safe to say that it didn't take us long to come to our senses and relocate in the hopes of protecting our hearing. Overall, the first quarter was certainly not something that warrants reviewing. At one stage, I looked at the big screen and was staggered to find that Bernie had accumulated 12 possessions in the opening 15 minutes. Unfortunately, many of them left a bit to be desired. I loved Viney's goal (despite the fact I had a fiver on Watts to bag the first), but we continuously went about finding new and inventive ways of turning the ball over in our forward 50.

My mate and I then spent the next three quarters on the top deck around the Midfielders Bar. During the second quarter, It began apparent to us that Max Gawn was on a completely different level to anyone around him. Undoubtably one of the best individual quarters I've ever seen. I couldn't help but feel immensely proud of Trenners when he bagged his goal. He has no doubt proven that he still a valuable player. Once Hogan bagged his second while sporting a newfound 'Andre the Giant' appearance, nipple and all, it had appeared we had flicked the switch and were beginning to put the Collie Wobbles to the sword. Christian Petracca's goal was seriously something else. 7 games....scary.

Ill be honest and say I didn't pay much attention during the third quarter. My mate and I ran into some friends and spent most of the quarter catching up over a pint. My eyes wondered to the television above the bar occasionally where I eventually caught Nathan Jones bagging a set shot. Celebrations ensured.

The final quarter (minus a Collingwood goal in the opening minute) was delightful viewing. Loved watching Wattsy kick a couple to firmly put the ghosts of his Queens Birthday debut to rest.

Overall, I couldn't be prouder of our Demons. Bring on the Swans

Other observations

No passengers today. Everyone had a moment of brilliance that justified their selection.

Max Gawn continues to set the bar. He's been in unbelievable form this year. The fact he kicks goals and plays like a midfielder highlight how dangerous he is. An All-Australia gurney surely beckons. He might be knocking on the door of the Brownlow as well.

Vince, Jones and Tyson accumulated around 100 possessions between them. While on the topic of midfield dominance, Jack Viney is a serious freak. 30 odd possessions with a busted knuckle.

Dean Kent, Oscar McDonald and Ben Kennedy all without a doubt played their best games for the club.

Frost in defence! Funnily enough, it works incredibly well. He'll make the odd mistake but in most cases, I feel safe when the ball is in his hands. He has such an imposing figure as well.

Not aware if already mentioned ( mea culpa if so )

Was extremely impressed with Wattsy's mark in the last. Running straight out of the square but had 2 Maggies running right at him. Took guts to try...and he clunked it. Top effort.

He's come a long way

I just heard Pendleberry saying they can still make the finals if they win every game.

really some people should not give interviews.

in all honesty there is no one who thinks that is possible.

AFLCA Votes:

9 Gawn (Melb)
9 Vince (Melb)
6 N Jones (Melb)
3 T McDonald (Melb)
2 Kent (Melb)
1 Bugg (Melb)

A clean sweep from both coaches!

But I wonder which one didn't give Max the 5 votes?  (Bernie also worthy of the top rating)

TMc helped his contract chances by getting votes from both coaches.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
