Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

They were all extremely poor.

It's not just about inexperience. It's when most of your side are playing their worst football.

And for some reason we see it too often.

Pedo wasn't playing

This round:

Average games played - 61

Average age - 23yo

Again, youngest most inexperienced side of the round. Even GC went out with a more mature side. Any suprise that our season is such a rollercoaster?

We have fielded the youngest most inexperienced side for 15 rounds this year

I was going to say the same thing.  It does put things into perspective a little, but the loss still hurts.

I just can't wait until some of these younger players have 20-30 more games under their belts.

I am just sick of the waiting......

I mean, i know i have no choice, and we have a team of children who might actually become quite good, and we are better than last year, and we show potential, and, .... and.....

I dont wanna wait any more. Im old and broken already and i cant afford the alcohol that i need to keep tuning in every week.

This team makes me grumpy.

And sometimes happy

But mostly grumpy.

Of course we are inexperienced. We play guys like Michie, Neal-Bullen and Vandenberg who aren't AFL standard.

These guys are inexperienced because they aren't good enough to play at this level and therefore don't deserve games.

Good Point.

So who do we have with this wealth of experience who can take their place? Even with Harmes, Garlett and Pedo back in we are still one of if not the most inexperienced side out there each week, and we have won 10 games with that. Would you prefer we play a little more experienced side and be where Brisbane, GC, Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood, etc are? We are ahead of every one of them and with a younger less experienced side.

We are only ahead if our young players continue to improve. We had a young team in 2010 and we had all the hype around us after knocking of Sydney.  2011 started OK but we entered another rebuild in 2012, followed by another in 2014.  We need potential to become Actual, the next 2 years we can't go backwards

Obviously. As of right this minute we are ahead though, that is the point. Having a younger more inexperienced team would indicate we have more potential for improvement than those teams below us, which is great.

The key word though is potential. If we do not realise that potential then we go backwards, at the minute we have more margin for error on that than the teams below us. That can change very quickly though and by about round 15 next year (give Goodwin some time to settle in) we will see which way it is going. Lets hope it is up.

At some stage the club has to jump and not look back. Leave the old culture like a skin a snake sheds

we could have jumped next week

But the safety of losing pulled us back yesterday.

We are getting stronger but we still have weakness to get rid of.

oh to have the freedom of the child again and not be accountable and be able to sneak a cigar behind the shelter shed and to not have to answer for your actions without the youth exxcuse but surely it assumes that you are going to improve because you age or you play more or you can only make so many mistakes before you can kick a goal from ten metres or you learn or are taught to run and run and run....

I think you'll find that the Dogs just pipped us for least experienced with 60 games.

Cigars seem to be a common theme in your limited history here Grey One. I'm beginning to wonder if they actually are cigars or maybe massive doobies. Would certainly explain a few things. You and Biffen should make contact. Or not...

Well bringing in Lewis and Hibberd while Melksham coming back is going to change this a lot.

Enjoyed our baby demons but it's hard not to expect bigger things for 2017 with a harder and more mature crew that should be again more consistent.

FB:  Oscar.      Frost.      Jetta

HB:  Hibberd   T Mac     Melksham

C:    Vince.       Viney      Hunt

HF:  Petracca   Hogan   Kent

FF:  Garlett      Weid      Watts

R:  Gawn      Jones      Lewis

Int:  Brayshaw, Oliver, Tyson, Salem, Stretch, Pedo?? Who knows. Probably forgot a few.

Bit of a challenge trying to squeeze all the players in but I'm happy we are no longer the babies.

I'm not saying it's going to happen a lot, but I wouldn't be surprised if Bernie is dropped for a game or two next year if our squad is fit and he doesn't reach a higher level than he did this year. He may have racked it up in 2016, but he makes too many hideous clangers for a player with his experience.

They won't all be consistent, but I'd have Gus, Oliver, Tyson, Salem and Stretch in my team every week (injury-permitting).

Melksham is perhaps the other not so definite starter for mine. He and Vince may well be competing for the same spot, unless they see time for Bernie on a wing. It'll be interesting to see who Goodie favours. All coaches do.

It's great seeing that team though. It's really starting to come together. I reckon we still need one more elite mid in that mix that can play forward or distribute off half back, but we can go after them at the end of 2017 if no further deals are made this trade period.

This is what excites me the most with the inclusions so far.

Another mature and classy player comes in further increasing the standards.

If we have another season like this one with minimal injuries I'd be worried if I was a Ben K, Bugg, JKH or Nibbler (and obviously a couple others) who really should be looking at cementing there place.

Yep. And I'd be worried if I was Bernie to be honest. And even though he's my favourite player, Jets may be in trouble too unless he keeps attacking off half back. He doesn't have the same flexibility that our other backmen give, nor an elite trait like Hibberd's kicking. I want a lot more from Kent and Garlett too. If they can't both hit 40 goals I reckon we'll be a chance at really pushing up in the higher echelons of the top 8. They're both too inconsistent for my liking.

Anyway, they're all good players, so I like that it's come to this.

Interesting with the ins and outs (including the ones to come), I don't think our list's average age is going to change all that much in the end.

Hibberd, Melksham and Lewis will definitely change things, but IMO probably not enough.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
