2nd Rounder or Melksham?

As their has been a lot of speculation (especially after the essendon verdict) wether we should have kept our 2nd round pick this year, i thought i would check our recent history of what we have done with this pick over the recent seasons. Only players picked in 2nd round, not taking into consideration priority picks and expansion team extra picks. Rating System: Good,Pass and Bad. N/A = traded out pick.

2014- Alex Neal-Bullen pick 40  11games. Good 1st Season but too early to rate.

2013 N/A

2012 Jack Viney (f/s) pick 26  49 games. GOOD

2011 Rory Taggert pick 36  0 games. Bad

2010 Jeremy Howe pick 33 100 games. Good

2009 Luke Tapscott pick 18 48 games. Bad

2008 James Strauss pick 19 24 games. Bad

2007 Adam Maric pick 21 31 games. Bad

2006 Ricky Pettard pick 30 84 games. Pass

2005 N/A

2004 N/A

2003 N/A

2002 Jared Rivers pick 26 194 games. Good

So since 2013 and going back to 2002 , we have traded out our 2nd rounder 4 times, made three good picks, 1 ok pick and 4 bad ones. About a 50% chance to get a 100 game player out of the draft with our second pick. We should still get 100 games out of Melksham so although the trade looks damning, it won't be the worse bit of business that the footy department has conducted.

Agree, not the worst decision.  Also, we can add the fact that although Melksham will not play in 2016, it is not likely that a Round 2 pick would do so either.

So I reckon the rationale behind a lot of the hand-wringing boils down to the argument that Melksham does not look like an A Grader, but there is always hope than a new R2 pick will turn out to be one.  Pretty weak reason to condemn the club.

I have no problem with trading out a second rounder for a 100 gamer. makes sense as most overrate draft picks anyway.

but I thought the timing of this was poor. we targeted a player just before he was up before an international doping body, outside the hands of the AFL. could we have targeted other 'decent' half back types with a 4 year deal? footy still seems like the old school 'mates' situation. just bring in those you know. until you get to top 4 that is.

Given we lost Howe I fee we have weakened our experience level now. and that was in our control.

the reason some of us are condemning the club is because they obviously didn't do their job and predict he would be rubbed out for a year. You can talk for 1000 years and you will never convince me that they expected it to happen, and that they would have gone ahead with the deal anyway, had they known. That means it's a large stuff up. The new regime hasn't made many but this is a howler.

ps the fact we drafted a bunch of duds and couldnt develop them over the last decade has precisely ZERO to do with it

The club should have known that CAS was going to come down very hard once it was known information was with held.

It is outrageous that the AFL had little respect for the CAS Hearing...

Think the over reactions are getting worse and worse now.

We won't be paying him. We've still got 3 years on the contract when he comes back. Will be 25 when he begins actually playing for us.

We've still traded a second round pick for a 25 year old who should contribute well enough to make it a win for us trade wise.

Clam down fist shakers.

You're not going to change their view on it Stuie, so I don't know why you're bothering after the discussion that went on in the other thread.

They want to shake fists, others want to be reasonable.  That's life.

I don't think many people in the inner circle of the afl or the outer saw the severity of the outcome coming. At the end of the day we have a player who will be a good contributor to the MFC albeit not until 2017 though.

we were on the losing end, but not by much, of the trade in the first place. Now it's a year less footy and a cheater on our list. It's a stinker.

Can you show me the evidence of this 'stuie', not arguing with you it's just I've seen nothing concrete on player payments...

I'm only going by what I've heard, could turn out to be incorrect I guess. The only "concrete" thing I've read is that the AFLPA will negotiate with the AFL for a compensation for the current Essendon players suspended, nothing mentioned of other teams.

Edit - The impression I get from this article is that the banned players will be seeking compensation from Essendon seeing they can't be officially paid this year.

We have plenty of youngsters on our list. It is not a failing this year, to not have taken another.

If we wanted another, we would have paid out Terlich. We clearly wanted some more experience and hence the three we traded for.

Not everyone added to a list makes the 22, especially in the first year anyway.

It is done, so let's move on.

24 year old, big bodied mid fielder with pace who is a proven player at AFL level over a second round pick in a shallow draft.

I wasn't doing cartwheels at the time, but I still believed it was a good trade.  He's sitting out a year and while disappointing, it doesn't change the fact that we've recruited a player who should be a good contributor for the next seven or so years.

I'd take Melksham.

Stu spends his life being professionally offended.  He's not stopping any time soon.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol
