Goodwin Style v. Clarkson Style

Something I've been wondering about ever since Simon Goodwin was appointed as Coach Regent is how his style will stack up against the obviously successful Alistair Clarkson style shown by Clarko himself, and the likes of Adam Simpson and Luke Beveridge.

Yes, fair call. Hopefully we have been busy collecting the attributes necessary to compete with the top teams.

For a start, I'm a still concerned we have too many lightweight players.

I hope he is a good motivational speaker, we all know how our boys can hide in there shells once the opposition get a run of goals.

Game plan is one thing but being able to lift the teams spirit to get back into the game is also important.

The interesting thing I have gleaned from listening to interviews with the Hawks inner sanctum is that Clakson isn't a control freak.

He listens to all the stake holders, asks their opinions and makes all involved feel an important part of the team.

This inclusiveness sets the tone for the whole club and fosters honest communication and creative thinking.

A lot to be learnt from this approach I would think.

Roos' brief was to instill grunt and intensity. Hopefully Goodwin will build on that with running power.

Equally Roos' brief was to instil culture. Grunt and intensity cannot be sustained without a new culture IMO. Guys like Brayshaw, Hogan, Viney, Stretch, ANB and so on, are hungry for success as a team more so than individuals and they don't appear to take no for an answer. I'm liking it.

Hopefully Goodwin can also learn from his coaching panel as well as his players so when the pressure is really on he will know exactly how they will react.

And there's nothing wrong with that given the amount of contested marks he was able to take.

You don't bother kicking short to a contest if your main forward is also in a 50/50 within range.

Our conversion rate per I50's is pretty good. The offensive side of the game needs to develop and improve further up the ground.

I think the greatest exhibit of Goodwin's proposed game style was witnessed in the Geelong win. The words coming out of the club in the lead up to and afterwards back this up too. That's not to say Goodwin won't always look to tweak his style, like all great coaches do, but I reckon it'll be more like our Geelong game. Really attacking. Using the corridor. Fast, sling-shot footy from half back.

It's a huge question and one with no answer.

Let's not forget 'Clarkson style' evolved over time and is not one thing.

Geelong style beat all other styles for some years now Clarkson Mark III (or is it IV) is dominant.

It will be overtaken at some point by some shift in tactics which itself suits a particular group of players. We just have to hope we develop that group and have a thinker who knows best how to use them.

I really have no idea what Goodwin brings to the table but his demeanour suggests he more laid back than roos. Clarko is a great motivator and seems to be respected by his playing group.

Roos shortlisted who he wanted, so given Goodwin got the gig you would expect he would bring his own style mixed with a bit of roos' style of coaching. I think he will be defensively minded but he will have the guys hitting the scoreboard a bit more. I'm still in that "wait and see frame of mind" with Goodwin. I really hope he is the guy to help us get the next flag.

Me too. I didn't like him in his playing days, but i'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's "grown up".

Unfortunately, my gut feeling is that he will never coach. the question "will WADA go after the coaches" has always been plural. I can't help but think that the answer will be "yes".

It was a greta exhibition by our guys - I find it a bit hard to fathom why they can be so bloody good one week - attacking, running, playing direct - and the opposite for most of the rest of the season.

All reports say that Goodwin is far more attacking than Roos. We know that Roos is a big fan of Ross Lyon and the defend, stoppage, don't take risks brand. He's been working very hard at making our players accountable and defensive. That isn't a bad thing but it has impacted our ability to score. I don't think (well, I really hope anyway) that the high bombs into the forward 50 are part of his planning as it's a tactic that hasn't worked since Roos was playing himself.

Assuming the reports are correct, what we should start to see as Goodwin takes over is more run through the corridor, quicker play and better ball movement into the forward 50. If we get these things while maintaining defensive pressure when not in possession then we'll see a fairly dramatic improvement.
