Out of contract and will probably miss the GF if Gunston is fit. Would be a handy Forward option with Hogan.

He refused to leave even when told he would struggle for games and now might play in a GF. Several older players are close to retirement. He will stay a Hawk.

Overrated IMO. Another of those players that punches above their weight in a really good team but would struggle at the Dee's. Suckling is another.

So we should just stick with the same bunch of players that completely suck, rather than go for players that regularly get games in the best sides?

Any key forward that we look to recruit needs to meet one major section of criteria.

Are they able to provide ruck relief for Gawn while their primary role is to play key forward.

If any potential recruit doesn't meet this criteria, then it's a no for me. And Schoenmakers doesn't meet it. I'd prefer us to go with Pedersen.

Has a man-bun.

It's a no, from me.

What would he cost ?

He's a pretty decent runner and not a bad kick. Could easily be turned into a rotating HHF/oversized Mid. He's also been plugged in at both ends of the ground over his career and done well. Roos loves the tall versatile players, so it's not beyond belief that we might go for him.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant....

Will be 25 at the start of next season, so fits the age profile. I think Hawthorn fringe players might cost overs in the cap given many of them won't leave unless they get more cash.

Would rather spend on a A grader or extend one of our young guns.

We can't attract an A grader and we surely have plenty to attract a young gun and bring in someone of Schoenmakers quality.

He panics too much as a defender. His best position is forward, whether he's AFL quality or fringe quality I don't know.

He's probably a touch better than Dawes and Pedersen as a 2nd key forward but I don't think he can ruck any better than those 2 can.

Then it's matter of whether we can play 2 rucks and 2 forwards or 1 ruck and 3 genuine tall forwards. Not many clubs do. North and Freo do. Whilst West Coast and Hawthorn usually play Darling and Gunston respectively as those mobile 3rd tall options.

I'd rather surround Hogan with a good 2nd ruck and a good medium sized player. Schoenmakers is neither of those types.

After the prelim on the weekend we would be crazy to not look at him he's better than half the players on our list.

Would become the new Demonland whipping boy. As error prone as they come.

Granted he's improved on the calamity he's been in previous years but would still avoid at all costs. Good example of a crap player made to look better being surrounded by stars.

Clearly people around here haven't learnt from recent history. Byrnes was a premiership player who gave us nothing. Dawes is a premiership player who is giving us next to nothing. Lumumba is a premiership player who is giving us nothing. Now some want to pay (most likely significant overs) for Schoenmakers who can't even get a game in Hawthorn's premiership sides.

You don't become a good side by sifting through the dregs of successful sides, you have to find guys such as Josh Kennedy (Swans) who are seriously under utilised by their current clubs ,or develop your own stars.

Lesson number 1: Elite players make the mediocre players (eg Schoenmakers) around them look much better than they actually are. Remove the elite players and surround them with average players (eg Melbourne's list), and they are shown up for the mediocre players that they truly are.

Al knows that one has been playing predominantly as a key forward and the other predominantly as a smaller mid. Hey, that's what Al knows.

Yeah look what the small mid did against the swans last year, if he's good enough too stand up in front of that feral crowd last week and produce what he did he's better than half our list, and to be honest I don't think chips played any better than what he has in previous years

Are you now suggesting Langford for Frawley?

He will not leave Hawthorn. Full stop.

Three full stops!

Three full stops!

well if that's true he's not being very pragmatic

stay at hawthorn, get low pay, probably not get regular game

move, get big pay rise and regular game time, retire with nice nest egg

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
