Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Jason Taylor - Is he up to it?

Have to agree. All that we wanted of Chris Dawes has been wasted. Cam Pedersen has overtaken him now. Time to move on and either trafe/draft for another KPF.

up there Heeendo, you beeauuty.

c'mon jason, lets have another key tall marking target to add to Hogan & the 'Ped'... pay what we have to to get him over the line & into RednBlue

I reckon we need a player with skills to play forward as a marking target, can play down back & can pinch the ruck as well.

so imo they should be about 196cm, & 96Kgs, with about 6 -7 years of footy ahead of them.

what can you do Jason?

& PJ come on, help out here... we need this other marking tall. can you help? maybe even prey to the all-mighty to get things shifting ? ;)

just a few thoughts

18/24 have played games in the 2 years that he has been our list manager.

I have bolded the real success stories in my opinion, but I am sure there are arguements for 2 or 3 more.

He has turned over our list and continued on what was beginning to happen under Todd Viney and Mark Neeld.

Jason Taylor and Paul Roos have put this club on the right track, with successful development of these players it is goign to be clear to see us playing finals in the next 2 years.

With Vanders, Harmes, King and White it looks like he's done well with the rookie draft....White's not looking far off, King has some talent but a ways to go.

I dont have much of an understanding of the rookie list rule, but is it 3 years maximum. Obviously it looks as though Harmes and vandenBerg will be elevated but if King is coming up to the end of his contract would they allow him one more year?

I have total confidence that Billy Stretch and Alex Neal-Bullen will be first choice regulars within 2 years based on what they've shown with only a handful of games this year. They have the essentials : reading the game, making AFL level decisions, AFL level skills in carry and disposal. Remember they are 18 years old, and have Angus Brayshaw as the first year standard at the club. Brayshaw is absolutely one out of the box, and will be a star of the competition. He's a cruel comparison for anyone. Overall an exceptional recruiting/drafting year. If next year is as good, things are looking very rosy. However, we MUST have a combination of regular and growing wins, and an inclusive 'team' collective culture to keep them all at the club. So far, so good.

Not sure on the rookie rules either 'Mad', but it would be good to see King get another year as he seems to have stepped up a bit this season. Judging by training early in the year he still has a long way to go to get his fitness and body right for AFL but does have good skills.

I agree, could absolutely label them as a success but also having featured in 5-6 games themselves I did not want to go the early crow.

I think both have really good endurance which will obviously be a pivotal aspect for players to have if the interchange cap decreases and Neal-Bullen has the ability to find space which is something important for modern footballers.

Future looks bright considering players like Petracca and Kent are still to come back from LTI and even Trenners

i thought the 3 years for rookies applied only to interstate recruits.......but could be wrong

2007 - Morton, Grimes, Maric

2008 - Watts, Blease, Strauss

2009 - Scully, Trengove, Gysberts and Tapscott

2010 - Lucas Cook

2011 - Taggert, Tynan and Sellar

2012 - Toumpas and Viney*

That period was all pre-Taylor, (we know what happened in 2012 with the Toumpas/Neeld fiasco).

They're all top 25 picks except Viney who was pick 26 and except that 2011 period but I wanted to show that because it was a howler considering all of those players are gone.

The blokes highlighted are still on our list. Watts has been through hell and is only now beginning to show consistency in his form. Trengove, Grimes and Toumpas remain question marks for the next year. Which leaves Viney as our only pick during the pre-Taylor era as an absolute tick. He has improved every year he has played.

8 complete and utter fails who are no longer on our list.

3 who are battling for their AFL careers in Grimes, Trengove and Toumpas.

1 special case who will make it but it's been a long time coming in Watts.

Compare that period with what Taylor and co have been able to achieve.

The strike rate comparison is ridiculous and the rookies he's picked alone in Vanders, Harmes, White and king infuriate me considering we couldn't get a top 25 pick right for almost 5 years.

One of the many reasons we have been battling away for so long.

Thanks again BP. :roos:

(mostly anyway).

Yes, it's a lovely read...

Oddly enough it is used by both sides in the argument for draft assistance over the last couple of years.

I say oddly because my Hawforn supporting mate is still adamant that we shouldn't have got any help 'because we did this to yourselves' with our terrible drafting.

When does a team not 'do it to themselves' when they become horrible?

He can be such a [censored] this bloke, we weren't even talking about PP or anything, I was just musing that it is good to see perennial losers like us, Saints, and Dogs finally rising with the expansion clubs...

Sigh.

this club has always done better thru its rookies,

............ as the shoulder rubbers don't elevate the rookies into hero status; until they have well & truly started to prove themselves. ... so they develop better in the shadows, without getting big heads

the draftees have always been given star status before their time. Not conducive to keeping their head straight, & focused on just learning & on trying to improve,

without the distractions of stardom.

We don't really 'steve', there's been a lot of guess work though.

I'm not sure it matters much now apart from getting the record straight.

this is exactly it.

the idea is to keep clubs from collapsing into a mound of soft guano. & being so far behind they cannot regroup into a strong competative power.

the rub is when the assistance is Given, but the club still manages to f*&k it up. I think this is what gets up the rest of the competitions noses re P/P.. they agree with help but not with exploiting the assistance.

Keep in mind picking Viney is unlike picking many of the others.. Viney was ALWAYS coming to Melbourne.....it was just which pick was spent doing so.. Al l the rest were selections in the normal manner.....just saying

No we don't. That's speculation and innuendo at best. Much more likely was that all the recruiting team (including Todd Viney) felt Toumpas was a "can't miss" prospect and would compliment Viney Jnr at pick 26 better than Wines. Obviously it hasn't worked out but Neeld shouldn't get the blame for everything.

It was always going to be easy for Jason Taylor to look better than Barry Prendargast, but I think he has done a really good job so far. Pretty much all his picks have been nailed or at least showed early promise.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
