I was thinking it was too obvious to even deserve a warning.

An update on the women's league: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/clubs-fight-for-foundation-status-as-afl-paves-way-for-womens-league-20151209-gljoja.html

Encouraging comments from Caro:  '...with the Bulldogs and Melbourne having paved the way with staged women's drafts and high-profile games featured on free-to-air television, they would seem certain to win foundation status.'

Assuming that to be the case the other 4 Vic spots will be fought out by: Carlton, Essendon, Richmond, Geelong, St Kilda and Collingwood.  The Vic teams yet to put up their hand are Nth and Hawks.

Further to the above. Is there a poster available of that magnificent shot of Tayla Harris kicking? There should be. And, I'd pay for an autographed one.

BBO, I actually know her old man.  I'm more than happy to put in a good word for you if you wish?

In all seriousness, if you can get a poster of Tayla, I'm happy to get her to sign it.

FWIW - he is an absolute gentleman and a scholar, was still running around having a kick himself in 2015.  Has nothing but glowing reports of everyone at the MFC, from admin staff to players.  Did mention that Howe was a fantastic bloke, but other than that he speaks a lot of sense.

I would be devastated if we lost Diasy, especially after her B&F speech.

That would be a real shame. Losing Daisy would be the worst possible start for us. She is a very skillful player, and looked a class above the others.

Should be available at the HeraldSun. They keep things like that in archives. Great photo - that's a photo for the ages IMO.

Where is the money going to come from to run a womens team ? That's my biggest concern

IIRC the announcement said that the AFL would contribute something like $500,000 per year for the first year, and decreasing amounts after that. Not sure how accurate or realistic a figure that is, but it seems the AFL will at least subsidise it initially.

If the Dees had the same success as a HAWTHORN very very few would care.If the mens team and womens teams were crap what next  a midget football league. No offence to small people. Forget about distactions and lets concentrate on what is rally the key issue. Sorry ladies.

There would have to be some provision for this I'd hope. Perhaps give the foundation clubs the ability to "zone" a certain number of players (say, up to 5) - we'd then take Daisy and whoever else.  It would be stupid and unfair if we lost her after all the effort we've gone to in order to promote her as part of the club brand.

Fcuk that idea. The real foundation teamsshuld be allowed say 12 players of their choosing and THEN there's a draft maybe.

Could we qualify for a priority pick before a full season has been played?

Daisy "will front an AFL-driven campaign designed to poach talented female athletes from other sports".

They could not have chosen a better player nor better person to help recruit women from other sports!

She actually features as one of the players in the 2016 calendar, I too would be pretty gutted if she went into a draft and we lost her. Maybe as founding teams they should give the Dees and Dogs the choice of one player from their list they can sign and the rest go into a draft. She is as passionate about the Dees as any player at our club.

I think both teams should get to keep their captain in the place of their first round pick in the draft. Keeps the identity at the club and nullifies any advantage from doing so.

Absolutely agree.

The MFC has had a few players over the past decade who can string together a coherent sentence but have not been so good at footy.

Daisy is the best women's player, an eloquent speaker and a brilliant role model. She is an asset for this club

Agreed.

Lets make it keep the Captain and have one pick pre draft...we can't let Taylor Harris play for anyone else. She is also a 'must keep' in my book.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
