Yeah, I'm gonna say we're still chasing him. Never believe anything I read in the media (unless it suits my beliefs ;)).

Hopefully, but EQ is usually pretty sharp.

Our chasing Bennell was always going to be conditional on

A. what the actual risks were with this situation.

B. How much we'd have to give up to get him to the MFC.

No doubt the suns would want more than just our first rounder for him, clearly that's a risk the club would need to seriously consider before making.

Having said that i'm still of the opinion that Dion Prestia is still very much a target and one i'd much rather bring in then Bennell, both would be nice though.

Gold Coast are going to be so very average next year.

Another bottom 4 finish beckons.

Doubt it

They were missing pretty much their whole engine room for most of the season

If Omeara doesn't make it back or is traded, Prestia, Bennell and Dixon all walk and Ablett is ageing and has a dicky shoulder, I would be very surprised if they improved much at all next year.

Howe and MFC pick #7 ... for

Bennell and GCFC pick #24...

fair call

So we effectively give up pick 7 for Bennel & GC give us 24 for Howe. Seems fair on the face of it but I don't know if GC can demand such a high price for a guy that has off field issues. Perhaps we'd be over paying on that deal at the moment?

Every team will be sniffing out Bennell. He'll pick his destination.

Incorrect.

Most clubs in the league have already put a line through his name

We are just starting to turn our culture around, removed players of this personality type in order to refresh the club and bring in hard working competitive footballers. Whilst on paper Bennell offers alot of what we are missing, with polish and outside skill, i would look at Callum Ah Chee in the draft ahead of Bennell.

If we are able to get Prestia or O'Meara out of GC that is a bigger win than Bennell.

Character issues aside, Bennell is a sell-low option for GCFC at the moment so MFC are wise to back out. The Suns are probably asking too much and while there are teams sniffing around they will wait for a bite. We have trade chips if their asking price drops.

Wouldn't have thought it'd be quite as easy as that, the bad press he brought on the suns have won him no favours in the footy community and teams aren't exactly lining up to come at him. I reckon GC will try to get their best deal and hopefully he'll have the sense to go along for the ride.

Viney meeting with Clayton today is definitely an interesting development.

If north have offered him 700k and if the hawks are also interested surely he'd head there and for a team like the hawks all he has to do is keep it together until they win another flag. Just my two cents

Don't think Hawthorn will win another flag in the near future.

We have to go for him.

I liken Paul Roos to NBA coaching legend Phil Jackson, who won a bunch of championships with "personalities" like Dennis Rodman, Shaq and Kobe on his teams. He dealt with them by letting them be themselves- he didn't set stupid "team rules" and expect them to be robots. The players appreciated it and repaid it by towing the line.

Exactly.

Like Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Or Denis Pagan at Carlton.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
