Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 20

M Jones was down watching Casey today. So was Pedersen, who has come along a few times lately. Heritier has been there in recent weeks but not today, same with N Jones.

Say and think what you like about a player's ability on the field (and I'm not a fan of some of these guys), but a seniors player who makes the effort to watch Casey games always gets a few credits in my book.

Edit: Sorry, that's not to have a go at any above posts. Probably unrelated in fact. Just a separate post in its own right.

I was hoping never have to endure the M Jones/ Bail combo again.

Probably mean spirited but it has been tried for years now and never worked. The doggies mids will massacre us.

This combo in the midfield would be disastrous but it's worked with both as defensive forwards (well once anyway) and it should stop the Bullies run out of defence. Yep my glass is half full

Just in case you'd forgotten, when we beat the Dogs in Round 8 both Bail and M Jones played.

So, too, did Riley, Spencer, Fitzpatrick, Newton and Toumpas, all of whom have since been dropped to make way for better-performing players.

Have Riley and Newton had their cards marked as neither seem to b able to get in the seniors.

Both have particular qualtiies.

Riley is the smash and extract type and Newton is the outside finisher who snags a goal or two.

I reckon they'll be kept on the list.

In fact, I think this is the problem too.

Neither are adding strings to their bow.

Riley is starting to get more of the ball at VFL level but his disposal remains poor and that's been the main reason why he's struggling at AFL level - he's a liability with the ball in hand. Meanwhile for Newton he's laying more tackles but he still doesn't appear to be getting enough of it through the middle, which again is why he's struggling at AFL level - doesn't impact games enough.

For a bit more optimism (this assumes Richmond beats GC tomorrow and keeps Geelong in 9th):

  • The Dogs haven't beaten a top 8 side since Round 5;
  • In fact, they haven't even played a top 8 side since Round 7;
  • Since they last played us (in Round 8), they have played 9 of the bottom 10 sides, with the 10th and final side being us, who they play this weekend.

Their recent form is good, but should be considered in context (I think we'll lose tomorrow, for the record).

Bail for Salem. What a nightmare. Funny how you can be listed 4-6 and then it ends up being about 14 weeks.

Also 2 weeks ago I felt sure I'd seen the last of Bail and M.Jones. Here we go again

If it makes you feel any better both of them played in the win @ Geelong

We have beaten them twice this year.

They have played nobody in 2 months.

If we control Stringer and the mids we should win.

Just the Venue that is the issue for some reason.

But they are not a top team.

At all.

No sign of Riley today at Casey. Don't know what that means.

Actually saw this on the web site "Midfielder Aidan Riley has now been named an emergency".

There's our answer.

Maxxy should dominate their rucks, we have the right match ups for their tall forwards but Stringer could be the destroyer.

We will need to make Murphy and Easton Wood accountable otherwise they will rip us to shreds - can't afford to have anyone loose in the backline for the opposition as we have in the past.

The midfield without Tyson and Vandenberg looks very shallow.

We're not without a chance but there is no margin for error.

At all.

You can only beat the sides your fixtured to play. The thing that will be interesting next year for them is given their improved year they will probably get a significantly tougher draw which could see them take a backward step.

They have done the job very well in recent weeks, when they get their running game going they can be very difficult to stop and we still have had issues with stopping free flowing teams that get on a run.

If it's a tight contest (something I think Roos will try to push for) and we stay within 6-12 points at 3 quarter time we're a show. But we can't let them get the jump on us.

Dogs haven't played a top 8 team since round 7, they've had a very soft draw.

Let's hope they get a bit ahead of themselves and believe in their own hype.

We are not in the top 8 either.

Bail/M Jones have a massive role to play on one of those HBs.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
