Adam Goodes

Who cares what he said in his interview....it's what he did on the ground....it was un-necessary, there are other ways to celebrate indigenous round than to perform an aggressive dance toward Carlton supporters , if you watch it again they were booing him as he did it ( which I think is great ) ...blend in Goodesy and everyone will leave you alone!!

Surely that's not the way indigenous players want to be represented?

Yeah, blend in with the white crowd, don't be proud of your heritage.

I don't know for sure, but I reckon Indigenous players would be very happy to be represented by Goodes, and they are represented by him - he's the chairman of the AFLPA.

We hear about reports of racist comments often, why does he have to be the hero to humiliate a 13 year old girl and make an example out of her, do we see any other indigenous players doing this or doing quite aggressive native dances towards opposition spectators... BLEND IN GOODES - ITS NOT HARD

Perhaps they're afraid?

Look how certain sections of our community react when an indigenous man speaks up for his people.

I have so many indigenous friends, this has noting to do with him being indigenous....

Here's the kicker...If Jack Watts acted like Adam Goodes does then we would all be on his case.

Yeh he would be a club great... It's a bit like Carey, great player...but... Goodes will be remembered the same way, something a bit dodgy about him...and completely different type of club great compared to a Neitz, Robert Harvey, Simon Goodwin type.

Carey and Goodes play 250-300 games for the MFC! I would've loved to see that. Now you're talking! Would be club greats for sure.

You need to put aside your bigotry Henrietta and understand Goodes if a great of the game.

When I saw Goodes kick six goals in the under 18's grand final in 1996, I prayed we'd draft him. I wish we had.

Unlike the duck he didn't have sex with his captain's wife.

So he occasionally dives and snipes. I still wish he'd have spent his career with us.

A great of the game.

Ok Moony, he is a great of the game, but that doesn't give him a free pass to be aggressive and inconsiderate to opposition supporters.

The big deal is, that it being indigeonous round is just an excuse for him to act like a wan ker...

Yeah, how dare he perform an indigenous war dance during a match that's a part of the indigenous round.

You constantly prattle on about how certain players on our team need to harden up, yet the moment Goodes stands up to a section of the crowd that have been booing him from the start of the game up to that point in time, you say he needs to blend in??? I say good on him.

Right, good on him for being proud of his heritage and openly showing it. But he was being deliberately antagonistic by running at the Carlton supporters the way he did. If he had run at the Dees faithful like that at a home game how would we react?

Yes, I agree... in fact I think that the entire Swans team should be hauled up in front of some sort of tribunal for almost doubling the Carlton score... from what I could see, it looked as though quite a few of the Carlton supporters were very unhappy about that and the Swans just didn't seem to care at all!!

It would not affect me in any way at all... the supporters had been antagonising him for a quarter and a half and he does a 10 second dance in their direction?? Get real!

I'm sick of being labelled a racist because I don't like Adam Goodes. It's reverse racism in my opinion, of the people labelling me as such.

I worship the feet of three fantastic and positive role models currently at our club - who happen to have Indigenous heritages - just as I did for Farmer, Wizard, even Jurrah before his fall.

I equally dislike the antics of Petrie, Boomer, Riewoldt, Selwood and any number of theatrical, diving, ducking or sniping players, irregardless of their skin colour.

I could give two hoots about Goodes being Australian of the Year (of all the sports personalities given the award, he's done lots of admirable work for the Indigenous community and promoting their cause) but I dislike his attention seeking, sniping and arrogant on field demeanour, capped off by his antics tonight. Just as Bulldogs and Tigers supporters disliked Nate Jones' overt goal celebrations this year.

This does not make me a racist and, frankly, speaks volumes about the level of one's intelligence to label me as such. The fact that Goodes instantly cites racism as the reason anyone might dislike him is as braindead as Clark bringing up depression every time someone criticises him. It's nothing more than an attempt at deflecting from their character flaws and not owning up to some home truths.

Manipulative and all too eager to place labels on others and play the sympathy card in an entirely-too-PC society.

Goodes is booed because he was Australian of the Year and he didn't toe the party line and chant 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!'

He said some truths that made s lot of people very angry to hear.

An absolute champion of the game and a great of the modern era.

seriously?

I don't like him when he's playing us, but I quite like Goodes and acknowledge him as a champion. What I can't stand all the journos saying "Why would they boo him" and "shame on those who boo him" as if there are definite answers to these things. Opposition fans don't turn up to games with rational arguments, a player getting booed for two hours shouldn't suddenly be an issue when it's happened for decades. Especially since it was such a small portion of the crowd.

It seems to me pretty pointless to say Adam Goodes is not a great of the game. His CV is outstanding.

It seems to me pretty pointless to declare yourself not racist, too, because of course you can't tell: it's like taking it for granted you haven't got bad breath on the grounds that you haven't smelled it.

I sat in the gate lounge at Tullamarine once, waiting for a delayed flight to Hobart, and could not help but hear a loud American in a pretty strong American accent holding forth to his friends about Tasmanian history and social customs. Quite a lot of I-assume-Tasmanians sat like me, just staring in silence and almost disbelief at the pontificating ignoramus. Some of us looked at each other and rolled our eyes, shook our heads, at the spectacle. How unaware can a person be? And, inevitably, the further he went in his confident explaining of it all, the more he got wrong and the more he displayed what in the circumstances can only be called a high level of unwitting arrogance and disrespect. He had no idea...

On racism, I think Adam Goodes has the floor before the likes of us on this subject - at least until there's really good grounds for calling him factually wrong, or excessive in his vehemence, or in some other specific way unacceptable. Racism is a subject in which the minority racial groups must make the definitions and set the agenda - that's the only way it can be. Any other way and it's simply further ignorant and insensitive paternalism, or in other words, further racism.

It's just stupid to suppose that comfortable white Australians understand the issue of racism against the Aborigines in Australia. We have to listen to the Aborigines. It's like supposing the Abbotts of the world are going to understand the life of someone living on welfare. I have a 34-year-old son on a disability pension. Last time he had to explain his medical circumstances (again) to Centrelink, the person interviewing him ended up in tears - but well-off and healthy Abbott targets people like my son. Sheer arrogant ignorance. If you have no experience of the abuse/misfortune, you are not in a position to make reasonable decisions.

So if some of us are uncomfortable hearing what Adam Goodes says, I say fair enough - it's his turn and he knows what we have not had experience of. I don't think you can say there's anything especially radical about what he wants. A lot of dignity in the way he's taken on our game and become a champion at it, and now speaks fearlessly but without rabble-rousing. Australian of the Year. Fine man. What he speaks against is abuse, what he wants is respect - which I think he personally has well and truly earned and which in context of his people's history since white settlement is well and truly overdue.

So I suggest some of the posts on here stink; let those who can smell it give you the word.

Great post. If white Australians are offended by this, imagine how Aboriginal Australians must feel every time Jan 26th rolls around, or, I guess, German and Turkish Australians could (would? Should?) feel every Anzac day, or Republicans feel on QB? Ridiculous that this is even a discussion and I only wish more Aboriginals had the platform that Goodes has to be heard on this issue. As a human being I'm proud of everything he's said on the issue, given the chances he's had to do so.

The issue for me isn't that Goodes performed a war dance. He's played an important role in raising awareness of issues facing indigenous people and used his profile to do this. Good on him.

The issue is that he ran over to the nearest Carlton supporters and directed his act at them. Now I don't have an issue with this. Players can celebrate a goal however they like, provided they don't give the nazi salute, de-robe or bring out an ISIS handkerchief from their shorts. When you direct your attention to an opposition crowd however, you have to be prepared for the abuse that inevitably follows.

There shouldn't be a furore over whether Goodes was 'right' or 'wrong' for his actions. There should however be an acceptance that he will get booed from time to time because of the way he conducts himself on the field.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
