I keep reading on this site that when we start performing as a team we wil get a more favourable fixture. Well its got to be BS.

Carlton finished 13th with 7 wins and has 6 Friday night games this year including the opening round of the season....

Rd 1 (Thurs night) lost to Rich 78 to 105

Rd 2 Lost to WC 62 to 131

Rd 5 Lost to Coll 45 to 120

Rd 8 play Geel

Rd 9 play Syd

Rd 17 play Hawthorn.

Chances are they will lose all 6 by big margins. Great for the showpiece of the game.

We know the fixture is a contrived piece of cr%P but how the hell do the AFL think this was a good idea. I hope the ratings fall to zero on these nights.

We get 1 game (which we won), the dogs get none. Another stupid AFL stuff up.

Don't blame the AFL (well it's their fault for selling out to broadcasters, but that's another issue). Channel 7 have first choice over the games they broadcast, and they are the ones who choose to show Carlton in prime time.

What they don't understand is that any neutral football fan with half a brain would rather watch (A) a competitive game between two interstate sides (eg Freo / Sydney / Port) than (B) a nothing game between two rubbish Victorian sides with large memberships. Surely the 80% in category A far outweigh the 20% in category B, or is this kind of analysis too complex for television people to understand?

I've heard this, well they can enjoy their lower ratings as the year goes on.

Although I do wonder if it will effect the dealings ($$$'s) for the upcoming AFL contract.

Channel 7 doesn't understand the difference between building a sustainable business and maximising short term revenues. The AFL needs to appreciate the difference when negotiating the next broadcast rights deal. Unfortunately network 10 is virtually broke so it's hard to see where competitive tension might come from to force Channel 7's hand.

It's a double-edged sword for Carlton. Great exposure but the problem with said exposure is that if the product you're selling is [censored] you're doing more damage to your brand than you imagine.

Do you think Carlton would be under the microscope as much had they not been front and center during prime time? They still would be, sure, but now everyone can see how [censored] they are.

No one wants to watch [censored] teams. Awful scheduling by the AFL.

The only teams IMO that deserve Friday night are Port, Freo, Hawthorn, Sydney, and now even the Bulldogs.

the best way to stop this & pull up the brown baggers is to turn them OFF.

Don't watch the top teams, whom hog the prime tv & fixture time slots... turn our backs to them, & the afl, until the AFL get the message 'to even habnd these opportunities', evenly across the board to all clubs.

this is the way to good health for our game. an even & fair compeptition based on players skills & team skills; but Not based on clubs incomes.

It's no so much that channel 7 have a choice over it, they just make their requests and recommendations. The AFL makes the draw on what will be the best "advertisement" for the game ratings and coverage wise.

It is totally up to the AFL what they fixture and when (as they showed with the Sunday night games last year). But this is the season before the broadcast rights get signed and sealed, they have created a draw specifically to cater to the broadcasters to give them the best reason to shell out billions of $$$.

I heard Barrett get on a rant and "demand" that the AFL move some of these Blues Friday nights be moved. It's one of many things that annoys me about him, he has the luxury of making these huge calls with zero ramifications on him. Instead the AFL should use these horrendous Friday night fixtures to push for a floating draw. To use a fantasy football analogy, you have players that can be mid/fwds and swap them accordingly. What the AFL should do is designate some floating games that can be moved if needs be. Always have the Friday night as a shiftable game to determine the best game to represent the game.

While it's tempting to agree, the problem with that model is that the clubs lose incentive to do anything to encourage their own supporters to attend as the clubs' only get one eighteenth of the revenue of any extra attendees. Or, to put it another way, some clubs would become freeloaders living off the more strongly supported clubs.
