MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 5

While I agree with Roos that Kent helped turn the game last week, he's hardly been lighting it up with possessions. If McKenzie can come in and do the defensive forward role that Kent has been doing, it might not be so bad.

Record number of team tackles in one game coming up.

Defensive forward ...... bloke misses them from 15m and cant kick them from outside 40m.

Tagger is all.

Don't rate this at all but good luck to him all the same.

If nothing else it shows that if you play consistently well in the 2nds you will be rewarded and that is a good thing for the culture of the club.

I said earlier with Kent out Jordie might come in as a defensive forward. Freo get a lot of run off half back and the plan would be to stop this. He could take a role in the midfield and have Newton drop back more as a defensive forward.

Lets wait and see.

I keep reading//hearing that Grimes/McKenzie are being rewarded for their efforts at Casey. Let's not loose sight that if not for injurys they wouldn't be in the side at all.

ANND by Gee Casey have played some "Quality" opponents eh?

Roos clearly has a plan for Jordie, i'd be pretty worried if Jordie started as the sub and there wasn't a clear plan, Riley has been in good nick and would probably have offered more, although Jordie could lock down on Neale or Mundy maybe

Stephen Hill

Mate, i wouldn't think Jordie would go to Hill, he would get burned off every time hill had the ball, not sure how many of our blokes could match him for speed.

I mean they did just play last years premiers but besides that.

God, you would have thought Jordie was to blame for the malaise of the last few years the way some are carrying on...

I remember when we were lauding him the way we laud VandenFyfe.

Re Jordie's inclusion: wouldn't it be fantastic if (come the final siren on Sunday), most around here are lauding Roosy's genius, while simultaneously pulling the cork on a Bollinger and wiping copious quantities of egg off our faces?

Riley

Because Riley has really shown how much better than McKenzie he is, right?

It wouldn't make a [censored] of difference who we put in from who's available.

But carry on carrying on.

Given it a bit more thought, hasn't Mckenzie been playing down back ? Reckon he might lockdown on Ballantyne

It's what I though when I saw him named. If they tag Fyfe I'm expecting Vince to get the role so the only other spot I could see McKenzie playing is the small lockdown back role.

Jetta doesn't get much of the ball down back so I guess if McKenzie can stop Ballantyne doing anything as a backmen then whether he get's the ball or not probably doesn't matter.

Neale seriously struggled with a tag last week after being one of the form players in the comp in the first few weeks, i think that's the logic, Bernie will keep fyfe accountable, and do what he can to minimize his influence

the ones i'm worried about are Hill and Pierce, i'm not sure we have the speed to go with them

I can see H going to Hill for the majority of the game.

I don't see McKenzie as being capable of playing as a defensive forward, mainly because I don't see him as being capable of playing as a forward.

With his kicking issues, I'm also worried about him playing as a small defender.

Assuming Vince tags Fyfe, I don't know if we can afford to have a second midfielder playing a primarily defensive role - one is enough IMO. So I think McKenzie is just being picked as the best available midfielder at Casey to come in and provide rotations, tackling, contested possession and clearance work, and running all day. If he does that, he'll be a decent enough inclusion. If he doesn't, he won't.

Of course perennial Cellar Dwellars Frankston are just a marvellous footy side as well!

I think Jordie was picked purely because he is defensively sound and has the best endurance of all the players left from to choose. I have a feeling he will do better than about 5 other guys in the team if he plays the whole match.

Dees by 4 goals.

The win against ninthmond I'm counting as a 11 goal win. 5 posters and 2 goals from poor umpiring were given to ninthmond.

8 day break, no travel after 2 interstate games. Freo bashed and bruised by Sydney.

Watts to kick 4.

Time to get the public frothing about the MFC

Dare to dream

I smell an upset as well. Go Dees

I'll alway love Jordie for his critical role in the play last year against the Bombers that got us that last goal. Always!

Big heart, hard at it, good hands,...

Make them hurt Jordie!!!

Go Dees!

Was just thinking the same thing. massive game by Jordie against those flogs last year. not just the last goal but played crucial parts in other goals and performed well all night. Pederson was also crucial that night kicking several big goals and got that last goal going from the back pocket in the last minute. demonlanders should all revisit this game.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
