MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 5

I'd go Michie, Spencer, Vandemberg on the bench and Newton Sub.

I think we need a second tall ruck considering the Freo set up. Spencer has been the best of the talls at Casey and deserves his chance. If Max was holding his marks around the ground and up-forward I would go for him, but he is not at the moment,

I think we are a chance at the G on Sunday.

C'mon Nash, it's Demonland, why are you even surprised, McKenzie did a good job on Brett Goodes,(I know he is not a Fyfe or Hill, but he was influencing the game) in the second half last week, if Roos just wants a shut down player, Jordie may get a gig

The same brett Goodes that had 11 frees?

McKenzie could well come in and play a defensive forward role with Kent out.

You are joking " A defensive Forward"???

Sheeeit I would rather be bold try to kick a winning score and go out and have a dip!

Jordy as a defensive forward what a waste!!

Jordy should play out the year at Casey!

Harsh but his skill level is deplorable!

Remind me again why he was put on an extended contract!

Just ask yourself , how many other clubs would he get a game with??

Nup Nup and NO!

I think we will almost certainly play a defensive forward, because we have every game this year, but i highly doubt it will be Jordie, the only chance he really has of getting a run in my opinion is to lock down on Lachie Neale who i think probably struggles with a tag the most of the dockers mids

having said that personally i think it will end up being, Out: Kent, Jetta In: Grimes, Riley

It wouldn't surprise if McKenzie is selected. From a tagging point of view there aren't many better on our list. Jordie's biggest issue is that he doesn't hurt the opposition going the other way. From all reports he has been made an effort over the preseason to right this wrong, so, given Freo's dominant midfield, and that we don't want to use all our ball winners (ie Jones, Tyson, Vince) on trying to shut all their opponents down, having a "negative" player in to play a pure shutdown role might be a tactic used for this week.

We need to take this team on as much as possible. Having Jones do what he does best, and Tyson too, then at least we've still got an attacking mindset. Playing Vince on Fyfe, where Vince can try and play off him, will give us a bit more balance. Giving Jordie instructions to run with Barlow and make sure he doesn't touch it, even if it means Jordie doesn't get a possession himself, we can afford to do this.

I won't be fussed who is in or out, but while some are making a case not to pick Jordie, I'm just throwing one out there to pick him.

Jordie will give 100%. He will do the job asked of him, he will not do it with outstanding skills.

Funny that we pillory Watts for not having a go and McKenzie cops it for having a go with little skill. Who would you rather? McKenzie is worth a shot considering the alternatives.

My guess for team, only hope is to not get slaughtered in the midfield (hence Riley) by continuous pressure and bang it long forward if contested, we cannot finesse vs Dockers skills...

Melbourne team: round five

B: Colin Garland, Tom McDonald, Jeremy Howe

HB: Christian Salem, Lynden Dunn, Jack Grimes

C: Heritier Lumumba, Bernie Vince, Daniel Cross

HF: Jeff Garlett, Jesse Hogan, Jay Kennedy-Harris

F: Jack Watts, Chris Dawes, Angus Brayshaw

FOLL: Mark Jamar, Nathan Jones, Dom Tyson

I/C (from): Ben Newton, Aaron vandenBerg, Viv Michie, Aidan Riley

Have a chat with the umps before the first bounce about shepherding in the ruck then throw Howe in when the russian needs a rest... :) Give him a run up for the contest and he'll win every time haha...

Pick him, or not pick him?

I would be surprised.

It's a given Grimes is in for Jetta, but I think we need someone with some goal kicking ability to replace Kent, my tip is Pedersen (who can chop out in ruck too).

One step forward, two steps backwards. Unfortunately McKenzies days are over.

Do Freo have any injuries? Their team look as full strength as you can get. if we win this it will be a defining moment

Last week was a defining moment but apparently Richmond just played crap. If we win this week the media will probably put it down to a comet passing

Sorry Billy, but this is just nonsense. In essence, at the centre bounces we'd have Jones and Tyson against Mundy, Fyfe and Barlow with Sandilands being the dominant ruckman. Freo are actually a better team this year without Crowley playing as a hard tag. They've now got Neale also at the stoppages, and he's been sensational. We need to give ourselves every possible chance to win the clearances, and McKenzie offers nothing.

I'd bring in Riley, and start him as a sub. Michie would start and alternate with Vince in the middle. Vince tags Fyfe when he's on the ball, and Garland gets him when he's up forward. Michie plays on the ball when Fyfe is resting up forward.

I cannot see us losing this game. We will win by 23 points after leading all day. Watts will kick four, Hogan 3, Garlett 6 and Dawes two. Singles to a shipload of others. The tide has turned. The seas have parted. We are back in town. I've got a brand new bottle of single malt and all is well with the world. Optimism is a wonderful thing. I can deal with disappointment but negativity is just plan depressing.

Come on, who's going to trot out the delusional claim or mention the reality bus? I bet it doesn't take long. A pox on your negativity.

Yes a replica crashed car should do nicely for the trophy...

How do we side the winner? Maybe BOG who has had the greatest run of no or limited preseasons.

That really is a great summary, i really think its the right time to release Vince, he's done a great job replacing Viney while gaining match fitness and touch but would be great if he got 40p's and gave us a winning chance .

So, Jordie is in. Sorry Jordie, nothing personal, but I really hoped you had been put in the "never again" basket. Love your endeavour, but you'll never be a decent player until you learn to kick.

Really disappointed we didn't play another tall this week. Jamar will get monstered by Sandilands, and Dawes gave nothing in the ruck last week.

Well at least it's pretty obvious that his opportunities will be limited. Here's hoping he makes the most of whatever chance he gets.

23pt home win against a interstate side is hardly impressive and doesn't turn the tide, 6 to Garlett is to dependant on 1 player, we need a even spread of 3 each, we won't be winning the premiership this year and may even miss the finals. We must win the next 3 at the G 4 me.

Yeah it will be a disgrace if we can't win 2 of the next 3....

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
