I think everything that has happened to Jack proves the existence of the Melbourne incompetence 2009-2014. I'd bet anything that the pressure put on him is a contributor to the foot getting to the point that it did - I wonder how forthcoming he felt he could be about the state of his body when he thought the club was relying on him? Not to mention the fact that we (apparently) didn't even know he was injured when we tried to pack him off to Richmond.

This is the first time in his career that I think the club has done the right thing by the guy, that's why I personally am so pleased for him and glad that the club has handled this in this manner, finally. Let's hope it's not too little too late.

Spot on. Schwab let Jack down in his capacity as chairman of selectors, assistant coach and chief medical officer that year. Not to mention his failures when, as head of recruiting, he drafted him in the first place.

apart from being the wrong thing to do by him; other players around the competition watch these things as well as us all.

we have to be a club that does the right thing to/for our people.

Jack Trengove has bent over backwards for this club, & we should likewise for him.

Last year we tried to trade him, this year we gave him a contract extension.

He wasn't considered expendable last year - he was considered valuable, and still worth a pick inside the top round of the draft.

I'm hopefully that he can come back, but it's been a long, long time between drop punts.

His injury is unlucky. Imagine Freo with Morabito storming down the wing, or Thorp playing like Croad for Hawthorn. Some players aren't able to play the game due to circumstances beyond their control - Trengove hopefully won't be one of them.

While Roos did say that, what I think was missed, does not mean they want to trade every player. Simply any player can be traded as thats how the system works.

I think that this is both a very classy move by the club and also a good sign that his foot is going well.

The club could have left Jack hanging and waited until they were certain he was going to be ok, but instead they have done the right thing by him and given him the time and security to get everything right without any pressure.

Another year for Trenners, thats awesome. Hopefully as sign his foot is finally on the way to being better.

Nobody deserves to get out on the park and play in MFC wins more than this kid.

Very happy for Trenners. I really hope he is able to get back on the park and finally realise the huge potential he showed when first drafted. And, as has been noted on here, he's still only around 23 -- the same age that some guys get their START at the top. Isn't VanDemon around that age? And, think Cam Pedersen was about that age when he debuted, too.

So, my point is that age is still on his side.

He's a ripping human being, and deserves to have things start going his way. I really hope it works out for him, and he can be part of the great MFC revival in 2016.

Love to see Petracca and Trengove come in to our midfield in 2016. Huge life if Jack gets back on the G one day.

Awesome news. The Club has returned the loyalty shown by Jack throughout his career at Melbourne. He extended his first contract early. He supped from the poisoned chalice of captaincy in dire days. I saw Jack play in the SANFL finals for Sturt. You all remember his first season; a player who willed himself to win contests at critical junctures in games. Can you imagine our midfield when he gets back to playing like that with Jones, Viney, Petracca, Brayshaw, Vandenberg et al?

Since then he has been diligently doing what he need sot get back on the park. If you are concerned about Jack being in the 'tradeable' category, i'd reckon every single club will be asking about the availability of most if not all our best 22 players, as we will with most others. it is of little consequence, the game is a profession not a pure love of the game/club. Players and clubs need to do what is best for them. If Carlton came asking for Jack and offered up their first pick (likely to be 1 or 2 or wanted to offload a Murphy for a fresh start you'd very seriously think about it and probably go yep - get it done without a second thought!

I see this as astute list management, especially if Trengove is on a smaller pay packet in 2016.

Many teams would have moved on, and many players would have done the same, especially considering he was a clear MRI away from playing for another team in 2015...

We couldn't have located a talent like his at ND89 in the draft so the opportunity cost is mitigated should he not succeed.

Nope, I'd still be happy with this even if his leg snapped right off at the end of the year. We owe him and shouldn't begrudge him a year when we've had spuds like Newton and Spencer getting gimme years.

I'd say Trenners contract would be a decent amount to stay at the club, ie 100k + good amounts for match payments to help make up say 300k

The best thing is he does not have to try and prove anything this year. Means he can be a bit more cautious knowing it is all about next year and that he is good for next year.
