I have a firm no DH's policy unless they can crumb.

Maybe Jeffy wanted to get all his court dates on the same day?

And here's the club's official statement: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-02-24/jeff-garlett

THE CLUB can confirm that Jeff Garlett was charged with drink driving in July of 2014. As part of this offence, Jeff was also charged with driving on a suspended licence.

Melbourne Manager of Football Josh Mahoney said: "Whilst the offence occurred prior to Jeff joining the Melbourne Football Club, the incident is obviously very disappointing. We have been working closely with Jeff and are pleased with the progress he is making at the Club in terms of his welfare and behaviour. However, his failure to inform the Club of this incident and him being unaware of his scheduled court appearance is extremely disappointing.

"This is a clear setback in terms of the way the Club became aware of the issue and ultimately Jeff is extremely embarrassed about these actions.

“The Club will continue to gather additional information before deciding on the appropriate course of action.”

This matter is now before the courts and Jeff will accept the outcome of the judicial system.

At least it's an old offence.. But ridiculously the club didn't know about it. That's very poor from Carlton, Melbourne and most of all Garlett.

I'm willing to forgive all the sins of the past if he behaves from when he got to the club. That's what second chances are about. But not telling the club is a major error of judgement.

I imagine Paul Roos would be fuming right now.

The curse continues.

Imo it has nothing to do with the curse rather the stupidity of one player and maybe lack of due dilligence from the club.

Only at Melbourne.

He's guilty of stupidity but let's see how it pans out before we start making a noose and selecting a tree.

This.

Surely we knew what we were getting here, anyway. Hands up who thought, "model, responsible citizen" when we took Garlett?

how do you not know that you are meant to go to court. i mean its court. you should know when you are meant to front.

If you are immature and irresponsible I imagine it's pretty easy not to know. You get the summons and ignore it.

How can the club be looking at disaplinary action when the offence occurred well before he was contracted?

It is a matter for the courts and as such should stay that way. Football clubs do not need to control everything a player does in their personal life, especially when it happened prior to any affiliation

You don't think it was important enough to bother mentioning to the club when he signed on?

I'd imagine he'd be looking at something like a 2 year driving ban and maybe some community service.

From our end, maybe a nab challenge game suspension? Maybe even the first month of the home and away if they really want to set an example

Garlett strikes me as a real immature individual.

Probably not too different from receiving then forgetting to pay a bill, albeit a seriously important one.

He deserves to be disciplined for hiding it from the club.

Christ, you think we don't have enough lawyers involved at the club to ensure he deals with this situation correctly?

Just an idiotic move.

Not if he hadn't been convicted. No one is obligated to disclose that information to anyone until it has been felt with in the courts.

If you went for a job interview tomorrow and had the same charge hanging over your head would you tell the potential employer at the interview?

Just because he plays football doesn't mean he isn't entitled to the same workplace rights as the rest of us.

I'm not saying it's not idiodic, I'm saying let the courts deal with it the same as they would for you or me. It happened before he was at the club so it's not the clubs problem. Edited by Hellfish

I know, but it's a situation that he has hidden from the club, and has been exacerbated by keeping it hidden.

I'd punish him if nothing more than to make an example of this incident - if you keep these things hidden, it only makes it worse, kids.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
