I voted "other".

If you are going to put a mix of current and past players on the banner then I suggest you keep it to those who have achieved something meaningful. Our captain has, three time winner of the best and fairest (admittedly not against the strongest group of players) qualifies him.

Robbie has.

Jimmy has.

And David Neitz has. Unquestionably. Most number of games for our club. Most games as captain. Most goals for our club. A two time All Australian. Loyal in difficult times and just a ripping person. Many may not know but David received a career ending neck injury in round 5 2008 in the final year of his contract. As such he was entitled to something in the order of one years pay as compensation and of course his salary (contract) at that time was significant as he was captain. The cost of that compensation was the liability of the club and as we all know our financial position was poor at that time.

David declined the payment. It cost him many hundreds of thousands of dollars. He had been playing footy for all his life; his career and earning capacity was over and in all likelihood he would never earn that sort of money again. But for the good of the club and at significant personal disadvantage he passed on the money.

You'd go into battle with Neita knowing he'd always cover you. He's never received the recognition he's deserved IMO and now would be a terrific time to recognize his achievements and contribution - both on and off the field.

Without disrespect Paul Roos is a Jonny come lately as far as our club is concerned. Dom Tyson has achieved nothing by comparison (and I love him). And Lynden Dunn? Drafted in 2004 and has put together 139 games. Having Dunny up there would just remind me how poor we have been.

Let's recognize Neita, he deserves it.

Interesting words on Neita BB, i didn't realize he had turned down his compensation. Pity the last CEO didn't do the same.

I had a couple of Beers with Neita last summer and had a good chat about the MFC

He really regrets his 2000 GF performance. He didn't play well and didn't fly the flag for team mates as the captain should.

Neita is a club legend but he is a rung below the champion level over his whole career.

If only he had slotted that first one on GF day things may have been a lot different

And yes an absolute ripping bloke.

Still looked fit enough to play!!!

I appreciate the sentiment behind Stynes and Flower being on the banner. But if any ex-players are going to be included, surely Ronald Dale Barassi should be there. In fact, the only three ex-players I'd have are the aforementioned.

If it's current personnel, I'd just have the Coach and the Captain (or co-Captains).

My idea was based on having a tribute year to Flower and Stynes with Captain added.

Simply that

IMO you have that three or go back to a group of people as in the past.

Wherever you try to draw a line there will always be somebody that is hardly done by.

OD, there is no one hardly done by if you just have Jones. He's the official captain and official current club champion, he's the unofficial heart and soul of this team.

By leaving off Flower and Stynes, then RDB isn't hard done by, or Norm, or any ex-champion/legend of the Club.

Keep it simple, keep it current.

Nb. To be perfectly honest, even if it was Jones on his own, I'd barely look at it anyway. I just scroll straight down to the threads, so it's almost an irrelevant requirement for me.

Jackson would have done numerous things for this club that most of us including me would have no idea of what they were. But thing I would bet on would be if not for Jackson Roos wouldn't even be at the club, an extension of that would be McCartney. Does he plan on leaving in two years when Roos does or is going to hang around because of the changes that are making us a better club.

all true, but it's too early to pass judgement

I would also add China Southern Airlines as a major sponsor

Getting the Chinese to sign on the dotted line is a very slow process...but PJ nailed it.

I was editing my post as you were replying DC.

I think yes and no, no because onfield results is what's considered to be the true test but yes because we've been able to get the likes of both Goodwin and McCartney who both would have had other offers and plan to be here after Roos goes.

I chose 'other' and no new players.

I'd prefer to keep Robbie up there for this year as a tribute year.

Plus of the current players, only Chunk, at least to start with.

Plus the coach.

Jimmy, and others from our history or administration, I have no problem with, but I would prefer to keep it simple and minimalist.

I like the design with Jim and Robbie as ghostly presences. As for the rest of that banner, I'm much in favour of loading it with senior players and youngsters who have established themselves - e.g. Dom. Not sure about Roos - he's a legend, sure, but not a Melbourne legend.

And Demonland, really! How can Garlett expect anyone to spell his name correctly if you don't!

To quote many Demonlanders when referring to the banner he will get his name spelled correctly when he earns it. (Joking obviously)

Can I blame auto correct?

Just my opinion, but some strange ideas being raised here. Dunn and Jamar have been underwhelming for most of their careers and hardly provide an example of something to aspire to. I don't doubt Roos' commitment whilst he is here but, with a three year ceiling on his tenure, he will end up coaching less games than Bailey. He is hardly an icon of the club. And Jackson, for all his excellent work, has no place on the banner. Please keep it to the current and past greats of the club, those who have excelled over a long period of time.

Is it about length of tenure ?

It is too early to judge if Roos will be successful or not (although I am bullish on early indictations) but if he manages in three years to right what was a very leaky boat and put us on the path to success then I would have his face up on the banner every day of the week. The same goes for Jackson - too early to make full judgement on his work but I like his start a lot.

The entry of Jackson and Roos to this club cannot be downplayed. We stunk on ice before their arrival and we have just started to turn what was a rotting hulk around. If they are both only around for three years but set us up for sustained success I would not only have them on the banner - I would have them both as mods.

Why not just Nathan Jones as the central figure.

Absolutely no disrespect to those that have recently departed, all of them were my favourite players at some stage in my childhood, but can we just start 2015 with just our current captain and club champion, and no departed champions on it? None of us will ever forget the legacy that Stynes and Flower left behind, but we need to move on. 2015 should be the year that change is obvious (it could be argued that it was obvious in 2014), it's time we look forward to the next chapter forward of this great club, not backwards.

I wouldn't be against a couple of background images of "in play" moments featuring some current team members.

Totally agree billy.

You know what, on second thought this is my vote. Lets look to the future not live in the past.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
