Why Dunny?

My memory of Dunny is in the fetal postion with Chappy standing over him in the famous game against Geelong after he'd tried to rough Chappy up in the quarter game break.

He also KO'd Ro Bail who was wearing the injury vest at training and nearly ended his career. He's a perennial tough man against small opponents.

He's played 136 games in 10 years.

He was good for the first half of last year but tailed off like the rest of the team in the second half of the season.

Good on you for supporting him but I can't for the life of me work out how he deserves to be recognized ahead of so many others.

It's sad to see Neita looks like missing out. He's in that very select group of favourite players for me along with Robbie and Junior.

At least I love ya Neita.

maybe some people attribute value to player because they have been regularly amongst our most effective for the most recent couple of seasons.. and not some neanderthalic macho reason (which has pretty much zero basis in fact BTW)

maybe you would like Dunn to carry on like tough guy Dawes so he can watch a few games from the sidelines each year?

in case you hadn't noticed, the AFL in all their wisdom have pretty much erased all trace of the 'toughness' you so adore.. maybe just go follow MMA or something

Why Dunny BoB?

Well for one i favour current players for the banner (though i love the repsoectful images of Robbie and Jim - keepers). If you include past players where do you stop? Yes Neita is a champ of MFC but so is Barass, Stu Spencer, Greg Wells, Stan Alves, Hardeman, Farmer and Schwarz.

Of the current team in my view, outside of Jones Dunn has been the most consistent player over the the last 2-3 seasons.

I love players - like Jones - who are able to bring their game to a new level and particularly love players who are able to change things that need changing, for example the faux tough guy stuff you mention.

It also should be noted that until 2013 Dunn was never really given a chance to settle into a position and was moved from pillar to post.

Not sure the relevance of the fact that he has played 130 odd games in 10 years. That's not bad is it (given we have not played many final in that time)? In any case when was the last time he was dropped?

Dunn was terrific in 2013, in a year when the team was woeful. I rate players who stand up when the team is rubbish. He was better last season. Yes he tailed off near the end of the year (something he has acknowledged) but you damn him with faint praise. If he had not tailed off a bit he would have pushed for all Australian honors, or at least the squad. His numbers at round 14-15 or so supported that view.

But above all he has become a real leader at the club. He is a committed Demon. He is vocal on field and according to training watchers at training as well. He works hard, trains hard. Has pulled his head in. He is one of our best 4-5 players. So should be on the banner.

One other thing. He also apparently urged his teammates at the 3/4 time huddle to go all out to win against the tiges in that infamous match where we lost after the siren.

I reckon it is harder to prosecute an argument as to why he shouldn't be on the banner than vice versa.

I disagree. He hasn't been good enough for long enough.

Thanks Binman. We could discuss Dunny's pro's and con's for sometime but in essence if you go to my first post I'm for putting people on the banner who have achieved something. We've had precious few recently which is why I'd go for players like Neita and Junior because they have played quite recently and will be known to people where Spencer, Barassi and Cordner will only be remembered by a lucky few. Dunny in the scheme of things hasn't really achieved anything and has never finished top 3 in the Bluey.

I'm interested as to why you say Dunn is a leader. Yelling at training doesn't do it for me and he is known for his brain fades (his kick out against GWS last year). Also leaders don't poleaxe team mates at training when they are recovering from concussion. Do you have any inside knowledge? Comments from other players/coaches?

Oh, and you need to be very careful about the three quarter time huddle response in the Richmond game. It presumes we tanked which of course everyone knows we didn't, well the DL community anyway. You might get a different response from other supporters.

And we don't want to go there again! :)

Although 73% were against our new crop being included on the banner I was in the minority that nominated HL. Subsequently he has been appointed to the leadership team suggesting that both the players and the coaching staff have great faith as to what he will contribute to our improved performances this year. I am very pleased with the new leadership group and I am quietly confident that they (along with Tyson) will get us into the eight this year!

Well done Dunny, congratulations. You've got every right to be on the Banner now if it's restricted to current players.

I agree (obviously) but as you say who goes on the banner is dependent on what the selection criteria is. Current players only and Dunn is a lock now. However if it say players of the modern era (lets say for arguments sake from 1990 on), then no spot for Dunn (yet). Really only Jones would get a look in from the current side. if it was the latter criteria my banner would be:

Neita, Farmer, Schwarz, Jones, Brett Lovett, Tingay, Brad Green, Whelan and Glen Lovett

No Farmer for me, he left. Junior would be a must. The rest are terrific.

Ahh i forgot Junior. In for sure. Bit tough of the Whiz though- he gave great service and was the most exciting player i saw play for the dees so gave me great joy. He went home for family reasons as i understand it

Fair call but it's a very elite group! After all, neither of us want Garry Lyon or Brownlow medalist Shane Woewodin. And then of course there was Adem and Robbo........

Love what you've done with Robbie & Jimmy.

There is a very strong "player driven" message at the moment and I would go with Captain & VC as the outstanding examples of this currently.

Others demonstrating this in games during the season to be added as they go.

I reckon Jones and Roos is enough.

If you need a second player, Dunn would be my preference after earning the vice captaincy.

If you are keen on a number of players, then Lumumba would be worthy from the new recruits.

I don't think it's necessary to have Jimmy and Tulip up there myself. We are ready for the now this year..

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
