Round 1 is integral. We have two away games after that, so the prospect of walk-ups on game day is diminished until Round 4. Win Round 1 and drive people to the club, incentivise them to take the initiative.

Losing Round 1 would be devastating imo.

We have to win more Home games, in front of our Home supporters. We only won away games last year and even at the MCG, our support contingency is lower, especially for casual fans who attend with members on guest passes.

MUST win.

You are right; we played St Kilda on 22 March last year.

On 21st of March we reported:

So there was a boost from the Rd 1 Tent at the game, but not overly significant. One must keep in mind that that game was at Etihad...

It is difficult to read the tea leaves I will admit but there was a definite 'Roos Effect' that has diminished a year on.

I actually can't remember a Round 1 being so important for the club.

We live in a world where information travels faster than it ever has before, and it's only getting faster.

Melbourne has been a bad, bad football club at a time when social media has grown and flourished. We have missed the boat during marketing's golden era. We have never really been worth talking about in a positive way. I'm talking about random people talking about Melbourne in the same way they do about Geelong or Hawthorn.

More people take in more information on a daily basis: we turned bad at the worst possible time imo. The negativity is amplified with today's media and online environment.

A big loss would be utterly devastating. A win would be amazing.

It's not the end of the world but a strong win and performance will do wonders for the club's brand and the playing group's reputation, particularly against would-be finals contenders.

But I actually have zero expectations. I actually expect a loss. I'm not sure where a win will come from.

We make a habit of being bad at the worst time - last time coincided with the boom in television this time the boom in internet/social media.

Trouble with aiming for 35,000 by Round one is that we aimed too low? Richmond aimed for 70,000 (twice our target) and already had 66+ '000 before last night's match. I have no doubt that they will be over 70,000 by the end of the weekend after last night's come-back demolition of Carlton. Outside of Demonland and Demonology, Dees supporters simply aren't passionate enough!

We don't have the support there to go and get that many members without playing anything near decent footy.

As for 'not aiming high enough' - do you really think that if we said 50k by Rd 1 we would have any more members? We couldn't even reach this so called 'modest' target of 35k.

Get us around the 8, abolish the MCC, and play exciting footy for 5 years and we will have 60k...

With the MCC here to stay - 45k-50k is definitely possible and profitable for the near future.

Tigers are only scratching the surface of their real supporter base - you aint seen nothing yet. Now they are working hard to maximise revenue per membership.

i beg to differ on that. i think that it is to the contrary. Most Demon supporters in the MCC membership take out the option of a MFC membership at the same time they renew. it is for a lesser cost as they do not require admission to the Ground so the Club so the Club's net position is possibly similar. These numbers are included in the MFC membership total!

p.s. As the MCC members renew their memberships back in August [to gain admission to the Finals], they are also the first MFC members to renew for the following year, thereby becoming the nucleus of the next year's membership.
