WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN NEWTON

Great news.

Would be very happy with this news, but thought Geelong had interest and would be frontrunners.

I'd say we'd be better off with him than using pick 53.

Or even 40, possibly.

Time to move Trengove to the rookie list ... I'm sure he'd agree since he has admitted its highly likely he won't be playing in 2015.

is it me or does he look like the Toump?

He has a bit of a mad stare. I like it.

How do we fit him into our list? There aren't many spots at the moment.

We have 3 spots on the list ATM. If we get Newton that is 2 spots. I think JT is a certainty to be delisted and rookied. That brings it back to 3. Obviously if we delist 1 more player like Evans and rookie him ( or not), we move to 4 spots and can use 2,3, 40 and 53 or PSD 2 or pick up another DFA. JT and Evans are of course on contract and would need to be paid their contracted amount in 2015 or this year if we have the room and the money.

I wonder if players like Spencer and even Barry are being looked at. I also wonder why Terlich was re-signed when no one was chasing him and we now have Lamumba and Jetta seems to be the choice for small back.

Agree Redleg, I think serious questions need to be asked of our list management. There's a lot of "in Roos we trust" going on, but there's been a few strange list management decisions:

a) Signing Terlich before we knew what happened during trade week

b) Trading for picks 40 and 53 which if we take Newton, we won't be able to use without de-listing a contracted player. Part of the justification of giving up 23 for Frost (which is overs) was that we also got 2 picks back in return.

I think you'll find the club has a high opinion on Spencer. Barry just signed a 2 year deal. I think they consider him much like a new draftee anyway considering how raw he was. No point dropping him back just to fit in another depth player or late pick up. Terlich, the club seem keen on him. He is a willing tackler and hard at it I guess. He also is probably our best half back flanker behind Grimes and Lumumba (sadly I rate them all between 3 and 5 out of 10 or C graders to use another term). But the plan seems to be to cut from the bottom not players who regularly play games.

I also can't see us stuffing around Trengove. For 1 someone might take a punt on him in the rookie draft. But also it's just the wrong message for a former captain. We stick by him and he goes on the LTI list. We do have the second pick in the rookie draft as well remember, so no huge hurry to get a late national draft pick instead.

The club got Aidan Riley last year. I can't imagine they didn't expect at least some unexpected moves in trade week/delistings etc. Simply put I think they value Terlich. That may be even more concerning but I think it's where they are at.

We are talking about Ben Newton and pick 53/PSD2 becoming available here. Right now those picks look better than Terlich but there's no guarantee. The club would probably prefer the guy who's managed to play some decent footy over the last two years.

Re: Frost. Membrey was delisted by the Swans and so can sign with the Saints tomorrow. They would've picked Frost up in the PSD. So in the end we gave up 23 for 40+ Frost. I had hoped we'd use 53 as well but it seems necessary for us to do that trade now that you see how it worked with Membrey.

I don't think you can in any way compare ND53 to Rookie pick 2.

No one will take JT, as he comes with a likely wasted year ( his 2nd in a row ) and a hefty contract. He would be left for us as a rookie.

Agree, as I said when we traded for Frost. I still think we will use 53. I think PSD 2 is looking unlikely.

There were 11 live picks between ND 53 and Rookie pick 2 last year.

13 and about 5 PSD picks the year before of which several have been delisted and others were mature recycled players. 15 and 5 in 2011.

Given that stage of the draft I'm really not sure it's a significant difference. You also get a couple of weeks to run a rule over who's left in the pool and get some to train with you. Pick 53 might be a difference. For pick 63 I'd rather the rookie pick really.

Ok well I guess no other club with big salary cap space does take a flyer on Trengove. But I still don't think it's great business to drop him back to the rookie list. Just seems the wrong message for a guy we want back. That might sound sentimental but I'm just not a fan of it.

GAMEDAY: Rd 11 vs St. Kilda

It's Game Day and after 2 losses on the trot the Dees must win against the Saints today at the MCG to keep in touch with the Top 4. A loss today will see them drop out of the Top 8 for the first time since 2020.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

POSTGAME: Rd 10 vs West Coast

Many warned that this was a danger game and the Demons were totally outclassed all game by a young Eagles team at Optus Stadium in Perth as they were defeated by 35 points.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.
