Jetta (51 - 2008), Gawn (34 - 2009), Howe and McDonald (33, 53 - 2010), Kent (48 - 2012), JKH (40 - 2013).

I'd say that's worth a shot.

Much better than our first round pick record!

Worth 200k to pay someone out if they are unwilling drop back to the rookie list

I agree for all the gnashing of teeth over who we could have picked in the top ten often there is someone in the lower order that ends up an A grader or B+.

I'd like us to use 40 because I suspect this is where Roos comes into his own in picking someone who will develop over time, JHK, Howe and McDonald are great examples of this.

Perhaps its that players at this level work that little bit harder and have more to prove.

I also look forward to the "who?" reaction it draws.

That said we should take no further risks with Trenners who i think will come back and be better thatn before

I'd prefer to keep Evans and only use picks 2 and 3.

Roos’ record in developing late draft picks is overrated. He is a master of getting the best out of players but he doesn't necessarily develop depth or turn draft picks into good players.

I can see why he prefers to trade in players. Look below, his strike rate is poor. (I have left out at least 15 rookie selections in this time).

2002

Traded pick 21 for Nick Davis (good pickup)

Pick 5 – Jarred McVeigh (brilliant)

Pick 34 – Dempster (father son, ok player)

Pick 50 – Josh Thewlis (who?)

Pick 64 – Nick Malceski (great pick)

PSD 3 – Craig Bolton (Handy)

2003

Pick 16 – Josh Willoughby (WHO?)

Pick 29 – Tim Schmidt (WHO?)

Pick 45 – Redrafted Amon Buchanan (decent)

Pick 47 – Andrew Eriksen (WHO?)

Pick 69 - Matthew Davis (WHO?)

Rookie Picks – None of note

2004

Traded pick 15 for Jolly (Serviced a need but Jolly was a backup ruck)

Pick 31 – Jarred Moore (OK Player)

Pick 47 – David Spriggs (Irrelevent at Swans)

Pick 61 – Heath James (did nothing)

Rookie picks – pick 2 Heath Grundy has been a good pickup

2005

Traded picks 19 and 50 for Ted Richards (Paid overs but worked out well)

Pick 51 – Matthew Laidlaw (who?)

Pick 54 – Kristian Thornton (who?)

Pick 59 – Ryan Brabazon (who?)

Plenty of wasted rookie picks

Rookie pick 58 – Kieran Jack (worked out well)

2006

Traded pick 33 for Peter Everitt

Pick 15 – Daniel O’Keefe

Pick 49 – Daniel Currie

Pick 65 – Peter Faulks

Pick 79 – Jesse White

Rookie pick 15 – Nick Smith (AA defender now)

Some pretty handy players with late picks I would have thought. You are not going to get a great success rate in this part of the draft but I would be happy to pick up this calibre of player.

I think Evans is already a bust so I would like the opportunity of picking up a Malceski, Grundy, Jack or Smith.

Excellent analysis! Confirms Roos views that the draft is a lottery. Trading players in gives Roos a chance to see how they stack up after a few years in the AFL. This is what gives me confidence in his trades-in: Vince, Tyson, Riley, Mitchie, Lumuba, Garlett, Frost, Newton.

None may become champions but you know the old saying: 'a champion team will beat a team of champions'!

Ex Melbourne Grammar like the Cordners sounds good [however isn't that where the Cockatoo-Collins twins also went?]. Nice to break away from Brighton Grammar and Dawes, Watts and Harmes(?) [and Josh Kelly].

and Salem?

The galahs were at Wesley, IIRC paid for by MFC?

They made a prelim in 2003 and traded picks for guys like Davis and Jolly who were best 22.

A lot of those picks were picks that were needed for the sake of it. Ideally you want them to make it but really you've got your best 25 players. Some of the early ones became premiership players. Then less of the latter ones did because they had a full team so no need to throw kids in for development.

If we take a good kid with pick 40 then just like Evans and JKH have of late that kid will be given ample opportunity to earn a spot.

Once Sydney took a down turn again the likes of Parker and Hannebery were chucked in the team and became guns. Obviously they were good picks but opportunity to play is also vital.

The other thing against Sydney is that in those early 2000's they were in the Canberra comp were they not? I'm sure they stepped up their development 10 fold since then and they also moved in to the NEAFL where they get some much better opponents.

It doesn't matter who it just matters that it happens! Evans, McKenzie, Fitzpatrick. Take your pick.

No way! not Fitzy! would much rather Fitzy than pick 40.

Any chance we simply ask Jetta to stay on the rookie list?

Trengove will be out for the whole year, therefore he would be able to play games as the upgraded rookie.

He's been told he's in and he's signed a contract. You could probably ask, but you'd be screwing the player around and he'd be within his rights to tell you to go jump.

But would you be screwing the player around if he's guaranteed automatic and immediate upgrade to the primary list concurrently with JT being put on the LTI, guaranteed full pay in accordance with his contract and automatic upgrade to the primary list at the end of 2015?

I admit, it's not a great option.

But nether is paying out contracts. He would essentilly be a primary list player as Whispering J has pointed out.

It would be a bit of pride lost by Jetta. But he is a smart kid. Do we know how many years Jetta is contracted for? Did he sign a 2 year extension?

Yes.

It's my view, and I expanded on this elsewhere, that with the evolution of club lists, the rookie list is now far different to what it was 20 years ago when there was an age restriction and rookies were looked upon as akin to young apprentices in the workplace. We now have mature age "rookies" and greater mobility upwards from the rookie to the primary list. Hence, I don't believe that professional footballers would get their noses out of joint if they were placed in a position as I outlined in my post above where it's done for the overall benefit of the club. I suggested that "rookie" is a misnomer and should be replaced with "secondary".

Of course, I may be mistaken and the philosophy of the day might well be every man for himself, a point at which I hope we haven't reached.

In any event, I'm sure that in the end we will either do as above or delist a player like Evans and in any case it will be done in a professional

and proper way.

I get that you're proposing an "everything's the same just on a different list" deal, but I still think it's no way to treat a player by promising something to the point of having him sign for it, then backflip at the eleventh hour. And it's not exactly the same, anyway, if Jetta is on the rookie list, the club could on any whim backflip and decide not to make him eligible for senior selection. What if they decided to promote another rookie, or Trengove makes a miraculous recovery? Given that in this hypothetical situation the club had already backflipped once, I wouldn't trust them not to do it again.

If I were the player and the club did that to me I would very much get my nose out of joint, and I'd be strongly considering my options (walking).

I agree 'Nasher', Jetta has earn't his place back on the senior list. We will have to look at another option to use pick 40.

Why should Jetta endanger his future by agreeing to stay on the RL? You are only afforded 1 year deals on the RL. What if he does a knee or gets beaten to a spot and he doesn't get year two of his deal?

He is one of the first picked now and should be shown to be as such by the Footy Dept.

So what is your prefrence Nasher?

1. Don't use pick 40

2. Delist a contracted player. Paying out his contract and running the risk of damaging the trust with all players.

3. Delist a player with the promise to rookie on the same wage.

4. Ask Jetta to stay on rookie list.

None of the options are great. The 4th is the best in my eyes, closely followed by option 3.

Are there any other options?

Does anyone know if Evans was at training on Wed and Friday?

    GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves.
