AFL National Draft 2014 Picks 2 & 3

an 18yr old F/F will be no good without high quality ball coming into the forwardline, he's likely take 2 - 3 yrs to be ready.

Pickett on the other hand playing as a quick small could play sometime next year if he's mature enough. not many will match his speed.

as far as talls, there may be others this PSD.... or we can trade one in next trade period. Dawes, Hogan, Pederson, Fitz, Gawn, Jamar, & rookie kids coming thru.

The really, really good ones perform from year one. The "talls take longer" is a bit of a myth for forwards, it's more like clubs will persevere with talls because they are harder to find.

Tall rucks, yep they take time because of the physical nature of their contest. The great KPF's more often than not start well and get better.

The longer we wait to get a tall the longer we have to wait for them to be ready. mccartin already has the size to compete at afl level so i'd say if we picked him he'd be in for a debut at some point next year. i

I like pickett too but i don't think he's what we need at the moment. we've already got outside runners in toumpas, kent, jkh, garlett, barry, stretch and even lumumba & watts. even if we did pick him i doubt he'd be playing much next year.

hogan and mccartin would benefit our team more with viney, jones, tyson, vince, toumpas, brayshaw, kent, salem, watts, jkh, cross, michie etc feeding it to them than pickett would with an occasional run down the wing.

Agree. I'm a big fan of Pickett, but don't think he's the right fit for where the list is at the moment.

We still need to get in guys who will win their own ball pretty much straight away.

While we could stand to add more pace, Pickett is icing on the cake once we are happy with the rest of our list.

this is the reason I wanted us to take Lachie Henderson the draft of morton, & then Ebert as I new nothing of grimes...

Henderson from down the SthWest of Victoria, & apparently a strong Demons family as well. Ebert as a decent tough player & the bloodlines.

now I think Hendo is out of contract at the end of 2015, the perfect target for us as a ready made tall (196cm) swingman. > http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/carlton-swingman-lachie-henderson-close-to-re-signing-with-the-blues/story-fni5f5nx-1226680981923

we should be in his ear from Now, & anyone know his family ???

I've been told from a credible source that we won't be taking Wright.

Story goes that Roos was very unimpressed at combine interview.

You'd reckon going into the draft with picks 2 and 3 was win/win. My Optimistic side reckons you'd be a certainty to pick up a couple of guns who'd carry you into the finals.

But my Bitter side is fully in control now. How many times in the last few years have we had top draft picks?

FMD! We are a career ending side. I imagine those young blokes are [censored] themselves at the the prospect of Melbourne drafting them.

FMD!! How will we escape from the [censored] up we are in?

Maybe Wright went one better than the Boyd example and told all the lower clubs to GAGF unless they offered big money straight up.

I will run down my street doing heel clicks and yelling yeeeaaah! if Staints take McCartin or Wright at 1.

Imaging Petracca and Brayshaw in red n blue!

Yes would like to be there to see that1 Maybe someone can tape for youtube?

this is why IMO a kid like Pickett comes into frame; he has natural polish & speed skills & quick agility. he shows strong run & linkup from the half backline... Roosy want that style according to last years talk.

could be anything. worth the gamble? I think so.

Sorry D but we have done enough gambling with high draft picks to last this club a lifetime, play safe take quality players, we cannot afford more draft failures.

Tell you what these Peter Wright highlights are pretty darn good.

http://www.afl.com.au/video/2014-09-14/draft-prospect-peter-wright

Good leads, good pack marks [albeit against smaller opponents] but exceptionally accurate kicking [and can roost it through from beyond 50]! I like the kid!

That's an exception set shot technique for a guy of his age.

He has a wonderful kicking technique. Can just drill them from 60. I worry about his tendency to go missing in big games.

Also lacks the footy smarts that McCartin has. McCartin very good at running to the right areas, and involves those around him very well.

Brayshaw, Lever and McCartin seem to have excellent footy nous.

Thanks for the interest Demoneyes, but I'm married.

Back to th drawing board then, another few years of misery. Can get through it though after following the Dees!

Christ he's in!! Our blokes struggle to "drill them" from 20!

I don't think we will pick him and I reckon there wi be threads for years to come saying why didn't we pick him and I think a club will get a beauty in him but at the end of the day we can only take two. But on a positive not, every other club can only choose one in the first round. Good times

I guarantee you that unless the two players we take are top-5 in our B&F next year, at some point there will be complaints on here that we should have taken whoever we end up passing on.

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
