We need to "leak" how we're really into McCartin but are open to a trade of 2/3 for a player and a pick downgrade.

We will have quite a few low draft picks in our midfield next year...not that that means much...Toumpas (4), Trengove (2), Tyson (3), Salem (9), Jones (12), Brayshaw (3), Petracca (2)...Hopefully we don't [censored] that up...

Posted

If we used picks 2 & 3, is be much happier with Lever and Brayshaw than most other combos.

Don't want McCartin, personally.

How many key defenders do you want? We already have Dunn, Garland, McDonald and probably Frost.

We need a key forward and midfielders, we don't need a skinny defender that's done his knee.

Posted

Considering Roos spent all year talking about improving the midfield... we're not... uh, actually trading in any midfielders here.

I see a half back flanker, a key defender, and a small forward.

Melbourne will get GWS defender Sam Frost, with GWS and the Demons working on a trade for the younger brother of Collingwood’s Jack Frost.

GWS is asking for Melbourne’s second pick and while the Demons are reluctant a deal will eventually be brokered.

It means the Demons will lure Carlton’s Jeff Garlett (for a late pick), Collingwood’s Heritier Lumumba and some defensive cover given James Frawley has left for Hawthorn.

Frost underwent a medical at Melbourne last week and had previously met Paul Roos, with Melbourne believing he is ready to blossom after 21 AFL games at the Giants

Frost + GWS pick 42 = MFC pick 23 ... hmmm maybe

Lamumba = Clark = Varcoe

Gartlett = pick 55.

MFC 2,3, 41 (Stretch), 42, 73 Jetta (rookie upgrade)

Pick 23 is far too high for Frost. What has he done?

We already have 3 tall backs, 4 would make our backline far too tall. Who makes way for him?

Posted

GWS dreaming if they think they will get more than a 4th rounder for Frost

But we could get another kid from them with Frost for pick 23

They're coming. We just need to be patient. (opinion, not inside knowledge)

We'd only do our second rounder for 2 GWS players. Frost and a midfielder.

On his own he's a 4th rounder at best. Tomlinson and Frost for our 2nd rounder would be alright.. throw in our 4th rounder for good measure. ;)

Neil Balme: "We're very confident (in Clark's foot). We've got our own people who we've spoken to and they're confident it won't be a long-term problem,"

That said, surely you need to cough up your first round pick for a superstar? Geelong are rolling the dice to keep their premiership window open. They must pay.

Clark's manager came out and said the deal was close and expected it to be the first trade done in trade week. As far as I'm aware he's the one that's floated the Lumumba three-way.

The fact that the deal STILL is not done would suggest that isn't close to good enough for Roos. Good, because it ain't good enough for me.

These powerhouse clubs have been pillaging the rest for far too long and its time for change. Collingwood says do a deal by Friday for Beams or it's off. [censored]! You'll get a deal when a deal is ready. Who the [censored] do you think you are?

It's been a long time coming, but it's awesome to see the number of players this year that want to jump ship from these cesspools.

Roos earned a reputation of being fair in trades. He likes win-win deals, as evidenced last year. The reason trades are being held up is because other clubs are being ridiculous with their demands, and it takes a week for anything sensible to actually happen.

It must frustrate Roos to no end who would rather just get [censored] out of the way. For example, GWS demanding our second rounder for rookie pick-up Frost. Yeah, right. We'll really give you pick 22 for a <20 game defender. He's OOC you numbskulls, we will happily let him walk to the PSD and you can receive nothing if you like? We're being generous with our fourth rounder, so take it and run. You need to cull your list anyway.

In short, we aren't here to screw anyone, but we're not going to simply let bigger clubs walk over us with ridiculous lowball trades (the Bulldogs paltry offers for pick 3 are another example of pathetic trade attempts -- it doesn't work with a guy like Roos in charge). Offer a fair price and the trade gets done. If clubs stopped looking for ways to "win" a trade then things would go much faster.

Posted

Obviously clubs just play funny buggers for the first week and nothing serious actually happens until the final 2 days.

If GWS legitimately think we're that stupid... well... isn't he OOC anyway?? Let him walk to the PSD for crying out loud.

Don't think they understand how that works yet. They've always had the first pick....

Melbourne: IN Garlett, Frost, 45 OUT 23, 61, Blease

Carlton: IN Jakcsh, Jones, Blease, 61. OUT 28, 46, Garlett

GWS: IN 23, 46 OUT Jakcsh, Frost

WB: IN 28 OUT Jones, 45

Sounds fair I think!

Posted

No way we should pay more than our 4th rounder for Frost. Especially when we can just let him walk into the PSD and get him for free.

We'll have a better idea of the club's plan once we see if Garlett is a straight swap for Blease.

Roos would be holding on to pick 23 for another Bernie Vince type midfielder deal.

No we are definitely losing, and everyone else wins, and i don't want to deal with the bulldogs and Carlton

Blease for Garlett

Pick 61 for Frost or he walks free to the PSD

Posted

Wouldn't surprise me if we gave Carlton our 4th rounder for Garlett.

If GWS want our second rounder badly enough they'll bundle it with a fringe midfielder like Tomlinson, and we'll bundle our pick with Blease.

Posted

Dreaming to get Garlett for Blease. Blease + 4th rounder maybe... That'd be a good deal i reckon.

Dunno what that leaves us to get frost with...

Maybe the Clark-Lumumba-Varcoe deal also gets us Geelong's 4th round pick?

4th rounder for Frost. 4th rounder + a player for Garlett?

Posted

Blease, Tappy and Strauss no longer have trade currency with the advent of delisted free agency.

Any club that wants them can get them for free after trade week, so why bother trading them in? At least picks have currency.

Ah Tomlinson is a KPP

... GWS demanding our second rounder for rookie pick-up Frost. Yeah, right.

Not necessarily disagreeing, but the guy who just won the Brownlow was taken 31 in the Rookie draft, Lumumba has been at or near Collingwood's top handful for many years but was a rookie, as was our other potential trade, Garlettt, who averaged around/over 2 goals a game for 3 years.

Some players just don't manage to put it all together by the time they're 18 - a rookie position is not necessarily a guarantee of long-term mediocrity. Frost will be taken on what Roos, Taylor, Viney and co. see in him now, regardless of where he was drafted, and if it takes round 2 to get it done, perhaps it'll have to be.

Agree though that it would be bizarre to be paying more for Frost than for Lumumba or Garlett (if it works out that way), or even that Geelong should get Clark for less than what we need to get Frost.

Posted

Seems like the only progress being made on trades involves us (at least according to reporting). Very much in keeping with Roos' management during his time at Sydney. I remember thinking back then they got their deals done quickly. Didn't really understand why they targeted the players they did or why they paid what I thought were 'overs' at the time (now I think I do). If we give up a second round pick for Frost (which has only been suggested in the media and might be well wide of the mark) there's a reason. Where a player gets drafted is not an indication of their worth (eg Tom Rockcliff) It's what clubs are prepared to give up to get the players they require. We now have a coach and FD with a trading plan (glory hallelujah!). My gut feel is we'll keep pick 2 for Brayshaw and will wait to trade 3 (either on its own or downgrade) for a mid next week when clubs start getting serious (and some might start panicking). I imagine the strategy is to go to bring in guys like Harry, Frost, Garlett (all role players) plus at least one maybe two mids (Is Lyons still on our radar?) as well as Brayshaw, Stretch and 1 other (maybe 2) in the draft as well as some rookies. That would be 8 perhaps 9 list changes. That seems about right.

Posted

We may be in for a few surprises:

- there has been no talk about getting a ruckman. Roos must be confident Jamar, Gawn, Spencer and Fitzy can do the job next year to win games. Maybe a ruckman is on next years shopping list.

- from all the team being tradeable, we are hearing nothing of any players being traded out. Could mean there are no leaks but it could also mean no-one will traded anything/one valuable for them.

Its all a bit too quiet on the trade 'out' front. Can't help think there will be some left-field trades involving the above!

Posted

The GWS 'core' ain't going anywhere.

The pact lives on.

Shiel is one of them.

The pact men. I wonder if they're on the pills

Posted

I'd actually be very happy for us to use picks 2 and 3 on Petracca and Brayshaw.

Also land Gartlett, Lumumba and Frost.

And potentially bring in an experienced hard bodied out of contract midfielder from another club through the PSD. Or one who's just been delisted, just for a year or so - ie, to give some additional cover whilst the younger mids develop.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
