I would send a letter to all the other melbourne clubs (except essendon) telling them I'm looking for a new club to support and asking them for their best sales pitch, why I should choose them and what they can can offer/do for me. I'm sure at least half of them would send me something.

I would still support and still be a member but only if it was a merger with a Melbourne team, only as a last option and only if it was us that basically "took over" - for example a merger with st kilda; home jumper would be ours with White added to the V, always kildas with the black replaced with navy. Home ground MCG training at upgraded junction oval (st kilda currently negotiating with VCA to renovate, and it's in st kilda itself) and club song is ours (cause when saints go marching in is boring as bat [censored]) with altered words - every heart beats true for the red white and blue for example... I'd cop that if I had too

My support for the sport in general has waned significantly over the last handful of years, but oddly enough I have become even more obsessed with our club over the same period. If we merged or were relocated I would still retain a diminished interest, but if we folded, that would be it for me with footy, and I would devote more of my energy towards football (soccer), which already gets it's fair share from me as it is.

But it won't happen, and I would be absolutely devastated if it did.

Anyone who thinks they wouldn't retain a passing interest in the club if we merged is fooling themselves. I think the attachment would gradually fade to nothing, but it would be there for a while.

I recognise that feeling as well FD; for me its the game that has lost its appeal which just coincides with out rebuild on rebuild....... on rebuild.I just don't like this game since about 2005.

If we don't have a very good list and a really good player development program with sustainable, on-field success (at or near top 8) at both AFL and Casey by the time Paul Roos 3 years is up I walk away from the Dees and AFL.

If we haven't reached this by end of 2016 we will just be fodder for other clubs to poach any good players we get and the subject of eternal ridicule. Our beloved Dees deserve better than to rot at the bottom of the ladder.

Better to put a dagger thru our hearts once and for all and shut us down.

So after making good strides this year as a club we are now going as far as being hypothetically 'unviable' after one terrible performance at the end of the year?

God help us.

If by 'good strides' you mean 'slightly below the average season results over the last seven miserable years', I agree.

Maybe the answer is a grand triple-merger with Fitzroy and University?

But seriously, we are in 'last legs' territory. Again. It seems like this club only ever finds its heroic instinct when that heroism is required to climb out of the grave. Anything greater than that and we return to our hobbit-holes.
