Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Can someone please remind me why we are now all hyped on getting Pteracca again? Whose Grandma said the saints don't want him?

Correction: These boys are just so happy to be playing together at the Demons

Some people, even in the brightest of moments, just have to find a negative. C'mon, get happy.

These guys may be the start of a new dynasty at Melbourne. All we need is to start winning and these guys will be with us for a long time.

Best draft in a long time. The glass is overflowing!

Think you are right crawf.

The last 2 drafts{roos best known quality}have been good.

Should be a great time to get a membership for anybody fencesitting.

What has me excited is not only the quality coming in but Roos constant theme that "these kids should not be the saviors of the club and we must develop them". The club has backed Roos and put money into the development side.

When you learn to develop kids properly and not pressure them too early that is exactly what might happen - they well may indeed become the saviors of the club.

I'm very pleased with the way things have turned out.

Whilst I kept trying to console myself with the fact McCartin was highly rated and we'd have 2 blue chip key forwards, the envy of a lot of teams, I just couldn't see it.

I'm sure McCartin will be a capable player.

Good attitude. Competitive. Big enough.

But probably not as big as I'd like.

What are the attributes that set him apart?

I don't see competitiveness and aggression like you see in Hogan or Viney.

He doesn't get knocked over on field, but he doesn't knock too many others over, and won't when they're his size and bigger.

Not particularly fast or agile, average at ground level for his size, not amazing endurance.

For all the hype of him being a "one grab" KPF, I recall seeing him juggle a lot of marks as his smaller opponents fell over around him.

Kicking is decidedly average.

I think St Kilda was sold on the player they need him to be rather than the one he is or will be.

I'm not trying to talk McCartin down.

I'm just delirious to have 2 blue chip mids, exactly what we need, instead of 1 and a forward that I'm not convinced on, despite him being firmly in the spotlight for 2 years +.

Petracca is a big lump of a lad who is also a very good contested mark, wouldn't be surprised to see him playing at Centre half forward in the future, working into the midfield, kinda like our main go to player when Brayshaw , Viney, Jones, or Tyson extracts it from the centre.

With Hogan at full forward we would be pretty hard to stop.

Positions are kind of useless, but I get the theory. I think he will start his career in the forward line at AFL level as Salem, Kent and others have recently. But I can definitely see us going Petracca's paddock if he develops to his full potential especially when games open up late. Richmond did this so well with Dusty Martin this year and Adelaide have done it with Dangerfield.

I'm extremely happy to see the names we called out this year, however - those saying 'this is our best draft ever/in a long time' - that is impossible to tell at this stage, and impossible to tell for at least a couple of years until we see the kinds of players these highly touted youngsters become.

It looks good at this stage, but some need to keep a lid on it, plz. For all we know these two could be the next Scully/Trengove combo.

Yeah, that is possible... But, Brayshaw has a FAR superior inside game to both Scully and Trengove - and Brayshaw compares well with Martin/Wines, who have transitioned very well into the AFL. Brayshaw does all the 1% plays, he tackles, gathers, crashes, bashes, he is a go-getter - and a dual sided player. IMO Brayshaw is an even safer bet than Jack Viney was.

Petracca is more likely to bust than Brayshaw - but also has a higher ceiling. But even drawing comparisons between Petracca and Scully/Trengove, I'd say that Petracca is no doubt the better athlete - and one of the better athletes to comes through since Dangerfield - and also Petracca is physically stronger than Scully/Trengove, arguably better on the inside than both, and stronger in nearly all areas. Trengove was definately classier than Petracca, and hit more targets, looked more silkier - but Petracca is FAR more damaging on the scoreboard than either Scully or Trengove was. In watching a fair amount of Scully pre-draft, a little bit of Trengove and Petracca, I'd say that Petracca is more dominant than Scully/Trengove.

One thing that stood out in Petraccas highlights is his confidence and absolute dominance on the field.

The fact that they are both much more physically mature than both Scully and Trengove, (especially Scully) is one of many reasons why these two are much more likely to have a genuine impact early. I'm pretty sure both weigh more than Scully and Trengove even now. Not only that. These two are much more aggressive in the way that they play.

The other reasons are obvious. They'll be developed appropriately. They'll be playing in a deeper and more competitive midfield. Under the tutelage of competent and driven leaders. The list goes on.

Supporters have the right to be excited. I find it baffling that there are still comparisons of these two with drafts of previous years. There are differences on so many levels. They just don't compare.

We were always bound to get our club to a stage where it is ready to develop the right talent.

And I'm confident this will be it. We've never been in a more solid position.

Make that 3. 2012 draft wasn't too shabby either.

Hogan

Toumpas (Still think he is going to be a gun. You don't lose the skills you came in with. You just battle injuries, bad coaching, loss of confidence. Roosy will fix him)

Dawes

Pedersen (Who would have thought. I admit I was having fits over this choice)

Jack Viney

Dean Kent (Starting to look like he's going to be a really good player)

Matt Jones ( Has done his job until decent players arrived. Don't see him getting a great deal of game time anymore)

The rest including Terlich were junk picks so didn't cost anything to go in and to go out.

Ha! I love it.

Don't worry I looked for all the reasons we didn't want him either in case we didn't get him and I have to say you've done a better job than me and on the other side spent time finding all the reasons we did want him if we did get him.

I also couldn't be happier. Petracca is definitely a safer bet than Paddy. Paddy could end up being a Roughead and if he does good luck to a fellow cellar dweller team. But we could well have the next Dangerfield without getting Dangerfield. And have the money to get Jeremy Cameron next year who there's obviously no comparison with big Paddy. So could be a triple win.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
