Changes v Port

Yep I know we only played them six weeks ago, but we are back playing Port, who are now in a slump.

Adding to this is the fact that Adelaide Oval is now almost our favourite venue - our best strike rate this year after our Crows win!

Last time we played Port, Dawes was missing and Chip played a big game up forward.

To me, we've actually looked the best in games where Chipper plays up forward because he is quick on the lead-up and with Roosy's gamestyle - lead-up is all important.

Dunn has not looked anywhere near as good as a forward as he has as a defender, so he needs to stay back.

Howey also has finally found his niche down back and his aerial intercept ability and quick long direct kick means he is more value back there.

So I'd send Frawley forward again until Hoges is right. The other third tall forward lead-up options are Garland (he's hardly setting the world on fire down back) and Watts (his past two weeks as a high forward have seen him barely touch it, though.)

I'd love to see a few changes, but that's not Roosy's style.

Given how we lack cleaness and cleverness up forward, I'd love to see JKH back in side - he was really good at Adelaide Oval last time and I reckon he may come in for either Terlich or Tappy in the only change and given how quick Port are and how many small forward they ahve, I'd prefer to keep Terlich this week.

I'd actually start Watts as sub this week with a view to keeping him fresh for a big two weeks of hard training yards with the break.

So:

In: JKH Out Tapscott

B: Jetta (Polec), Dunn (Schulz), Garland/Terlich (White)

HB: Howe (Wingard) McDonald (Westhoff) Grimes (R.Gray)

C: M.Jones N.Jones Vince

HF: Kent Frawley Riley

F: JKH Dawes Bail

Ru: Jamar McKenzie (Boak) Viney

Int: Terlich, Tyson, Pedersen

Sub: Watts

Not sure if Michie will get a go until he learns his defensive side. Last week Brad miller said that viv is still struggling to carry out what there asking. Be interesting to see this weeks VFL write up. I think Blease has well and truly earnt a go, we need some leg speed and that showed against Geelong. It's now or never for Blease, he has to get a game to prove his worth keeping on the list. Last week roos said he was close so you'd assume his next in line. Tapscott as I've said in previous threads, just does nothing and provides nothing.

IN : Blease

OUT: Tapscott

* Michie for Mckenzie if viv has worked on his deficiencies

You are probably correct. But to me this total fixation on defense is a flaw in the PR plan. This to me is why we do not score . Everyone is in such a defensive mindset that there is no positive thoughts. You can see it in the slow reactions, second thoughts. No one is taking a risk. The season is gone so why not switch them over to attacking. Look at the Bulldogs. Their plan had 22 "cracking in" to use McCartneys words. Consequently no outlets. They were getting heaps of the ball but turning over almost every time. Now they seem to be looking for a more balanced plan with some on the outside to get the second possession. Less turnovers, a bit of run and open spaces.

I think roosys plan is to teach them all how to defend first and then has slowly bought in the attacking aspect. Earlier in the year he said he was coaching at about %80 capacity but I think since about the collingwood game we have seen us scored more heavily against. I think this is due to roos bringing in a slightly more attacking style, which has upped the turnovers and seen us opened up a bit more and scored more against. I'd like to see first 1-12 round scores from turnovers compared to the last 6 weeks. I think roos has added a touch of attack but the skill level of the players aren't up to it

Paleese we need to see if Blease has learned anything in the magoos.

Play him for the rest of the year, unless of course the jury have already decided his fate/!?

Michie as well needs a run I think!

I think 'cracking in' is part of Roos process too, in fact I suspect he's even used those words somewhere along the line. But like Lyon and others he's also focussed / unwavering on structures, systems and process. Seems to me that's how the Swans go about it. To date we've shown some glimpses, but can't yet hold either together for long enough and may not yet have enough cattle who are capable of acceptable execution. I think that may have been why he was so [censored] with a number of our more senior blokes falling back into the 'dropping off' mentality.

Tappy out for JHK, Bail out for Blease, riley to the wing and mat jones has a rest, Garland forward and georgio in (replacing matt jones).

That is more changes than the collective over the last month I cannot see it happening

Just saw Blease had 26 touches, 2 goals and 6 tackles on the weekend. Lock him in for a senior birth I reckon.

Would be craziness to drop Tapscott after one game. Even the cream struggle in their first game back after a long absence. He needs a couple of bites at it.

Blease seems a certainty to come in on the back of Roos's comments prior to the weekend. With 26 touches and 2 goals, he will surely play. JKH to also come in to provide some creativity going forward.

In : Blease, JKH

Out: Terlich, M Jones

Michie one more week away.

I think that its time to play Blease, and Tapscott shouldnt get dropped..

I would drop McKenzie, becuas I just don't rate him has been a tagger his whole career and isnt creative enough to win his own ball and spread quick enough from stoppages.

I'd give Bail a spell, just doesn't kick enough goals, he has been good, but we don't hit the scoreboard enough. We need FWDs who make half chances goals ie Blease and I would play Howe up Fwd!!

B: Jetta Dunn Garland

HB: Riley McDonald Grimes

C: M.Jones N.Jones Vince

HF: Pedersen Frawley Blease/kent

F: Watts/tapscott Dawes Howe

Ru: Jamar Tyson Viney

Int: Tapscott/watts, Terlich, Kent/Blease

Sub: JKH

Id play JKH as a sub and be rotating Watts and tapscott to keep them both fresh!

i just don't see how we will ever win this game. we look pooped.

Ports not so fresh themselves.

Not suggesting we will win, however i do think we have more of a chance than earlier in the year when port were on a high.

And we pushed them to the line then surprisingly.

but your right, the boys are tired. our lack of depth and crossy are showing.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
