Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Speed?

Ball winning ability (hardly a pack marker or clearance machine)

Ball finding ability (doesn't get to the right spots)

We wanted Paul Chapman. We got a hard, tough goer who can kick the ball a long way. But he can't find it and doesn't use it.

ok

I'm going against the grain and am a little underwhelmed by Brayshaw.

Watching his possessions across the carnival he has a tendency to just grab the ball, take a step or two and just bang it on the boot.

If we're to take a pick 2 to the draft I hope the Saints go McCartin at 1 and we could take Petracca at 2 ahead of Brayshaw.

As opposed to someone who kicks it beautifully but can't get it?

Melbourne Height/Weight 180 cm / 86 kg Position(s) Forward / Midfielder Club information Current club Melbourne Number 35 Playing career1Years Club Games (Goals) 2011– Melbourne 48 (12)

1 Playing statistics correct to end of 2014 season.

Luke Tapscott (born 28 June 1991 in Orroroo, South Australia) is an Australian rules footballer for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).

Tapscott started his football for Orroroo before making the move down to Adelaide to play football for North Adelaide Football Club and his school Prince Alfred College, where he became friends with Melbourne teammate Jack Trengove.[1] He excelled through the ranks as a tough, built, young forward/midfielder with an exceptional penetrating kick, on both the left and right foot. After twice representing South Australia at the AFL National Under 18 Championships and being named in the All Australian team, he was picked as the 18th overall pick in the 2009 AFL Draft, by the Melbourne Football Club. He has been compared to 2009 AFL Rising Star winner Daniel Rich.[2]

Edit:- What is my point? Forward/midfielder compared to Daniel Rich. 1st round pick.

Not once have I ever seen Luke Tapscott start a game in the center or even go in for a qtr.

Too be honest Wiki have got this wrong (as they mostly do)

I mean they are even comparing him to Daniel Rich? Seriously wtf is up with that?? The only thing that comes close to be Rich is his long kicking and that's it... Might aswell compare him to Paul Wheatley aswell.

His Junior days he played all of Half Forward and had a little stint in the half back back in 2011. Ever since then he has mostly play Half Forward.

After watching that highlights package and hearing him speak, I'm very excited to have this kid at the club.

Kicks for goal on his right but predominantly uses his left during general play. Looks a lovely kick on both feet.

He says he models his game around Joel Selwood and he certainly looks to have similarities with the way he plays.

Speaks very well too and sounds very sure of himself without sounding arrogant.

Can't wait to see him in the red and blue provided that the saints don't surprise the football world and take him with the first pick which is obviously very unlikely.

a blink monkey could see that the MFC needed Ollie Wines like a human needs oxygen

No idea what Todd Viney was thinking, although there are rumours that he did want Wines but was overridden by Mark Neeld who wanted Toumpas

I guess we will never know

Reliably informed that this was the case. Neeld overruled because he wanted an outside runner to complement the midfield (presumably Viney coming in with a later pick factored into his thoughts). I’m a big believer in letting the recruiter’s recruit. It’s rare that a coach has the same level of player knowledge on the kids coming up (Roos may be an exception somewhat, given he saw a fair bit of Angus Brayshaw this year). I still think that Toumpas can be a good player, but probably slightly unfair to blame the recruiters for missing Wines. Neeld made the call.

Tom Scully...

For all Scully’s work ethic and running capacity, his problem is his that he is too small to play his ideal position as an inside mid, and his kicking isn’t good enough to be excel as an outside mid. Brayshaw’s issues can be worked on, and there’s no question of whether he is big enough to play as an inside midfielder. He is as safe a pick as they come.

At the time if you were talking about getting a good balance through the midfield an outside runner was a good idea, except Toumpas just aint what we'd hope he'd be. Too slow.

Is there any chance the Saints will move to take Brayshaw at No# 1?

I've wondered about this myself. I sense the Sainters are more focused on talls as they are short on them.. as opposed mids. But its scenario for sure.

So then we end up with Petracca. Who would you rather have?

The press are all over Petracca being no. 1 despite the fact he is a half forward playing in the midfield this year and is 185 not 187cm. I don't know the answer to this.

Does anyone have an informed opinion?

I can tell you from a credible source inside the club that this idea is patently false.

The whole recruiting team made a calculated decision to pick Toumpas over wines, and were ecstatic that Jimmy slipped through to Pick 4.

The "Mark-Neeld-overrode-Viney-at-the-last-minute" song and dance is complete garbage.

Unfortunately Jimmy hasn't come on as expected (yet). Sometime you just get it wrong.

I have heard this as well.

I have spoken to a Wines Sibling and they confirmed that as soon as they heard that GWS were going to overlook Toumpas Melbourne turned its focus straight onto him. Mark Neeld was personally a big fan but Todd and recruiting team thought Toumpas had enormous upside - more than Wines.

Sad affair ...

Have heard the same thing from someone very close to the club a the time. It was Viney's call.

Even Ollie's best mate Jack Viney when interviewed before the draft about which player he'd most like to see at Melbourne alongside him said Jimmy Toumpas. Said he'd played with him juniors in SA and was the classiest player in the draft and a terrific leader.

Who knows lads. Kreuzer was clearly streets ahead of Cotchin at the 2 year mark. even then its too early to call. Wines has had a cracking start but reckon if we start winning the clearances, jimmy will come into his own. Where was Robbie Gray 2 years ago? were people all over to trade for him? some work it out at different stages.

He doesn't look like a bust to me.

Shhh. Don't you know such logic doesn't fly these days. The new rule if not a gun in the first 3 years then they are spuds. Wise up

Strong across the hips. Good reader of play. Great attitude.....

Like it a lot.

..and is a right footer that like Mitchell usually prefers to kick with his left in general play. That is a huge advantage for Mitchell as it opens up space form him with players naturally thinking to cover his right foot. Very handy to have lefties in the side

I don't have a particular problem with a lack of pace for someone in his role. Contested inside midfielders don't need speed (especially at his size) as long as they can win the inside ball consistently and put up high numbers. In confined spaces, you can do your defensive duties without needing to be quick (a la Bartel, Kennedy, Mitchell etc).

The problem Jack T has is that he isn't good enough at winning the inside ball. That's where he gets exposed, because he's pitted against quick outside players in open space.

And I fully agree with you about the highlights packages. They show a lot of the flashy outside stuff, but rarely the nitty gritty boring inside stuff.

This talk reminds me of James McDonald - nothing flashy, but heaps of difficult to see (from over the fence) hard work inside.......at the end of a game I would sometimes wonder what he had been doing, had he even been playing, and then I saw 20 kicks, 20 handballs, 8 clearances, 8 tackles! But not necessarily the guy you would want making the fast break from half back into open territory.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
