The Mighty Demons, not the "Dees"

Recommended Posts

Checker Hughes would be turning in his grave if he heard supporters/media referring to his "Mighty Demons" as anything but the Demons i would reckon.

I support Munga all the way and never refer to our team as anything but "the Demons" or "The mighty Demons.

Shame on anyone who uses the other limp wristed term... cringeworthy :-P

When I went to the footy regularly i started a campaign in opposition to the chant which every club had

collingwood clap clap clap

richmond clap clap clap

west coast clap clap clap

and interrupted there chant with a GO DEES found it very satisfying

collingwood GO DEES clap clap clap

you can then continue the GO DEES at different syncopations to disrupt any opposition supporters cheers and also to match the pace of the game. Was a great build up in passage of play GODEES,GO DEES, GO DEES (like a steam train engine gathering power) with an exhortation of triumph and relief when the score was achieved DEEEMONS.

I guess you had to be there!

When you pass people on the way to the game wearing your guernsey or your scarf, almost without exception you hear "Go Dees!" or "Carn the Dees!".

It's entrenched. Like the Pies. Or the Tiges. And I wouldn't want it to change even if it could be.

I am at a loss how to respond to this!

just win lots of games beyond they can be called anything anyone likes.

losing is what gives me the gripes !

We are the Melbourne Demons and we wear navy blue with a red yoke. If any of those aspects of our identity disappear, our victories become that much less meaningful.

A rose by any other name may smell as sweet, but that is not the case in the world of sport.

The only thing I rail against Chook is the colour red we use.

Beyond I honestly have low care about.

Oh one more

STOP losing

With the onset of creeping secularism, "Demons" has become a softer term, associated with nerds playing fantasy games on their computers. We need something that will genuinely inspire fear. The Funnel Webs, the Taipans, the Bull Sharks, the Hippos, the Merchant Bankers, the Feminazis. We could try that last one out tonight

Why not really tap into modern fears and call ourselves the fundamentalists?

Well this thread is like a poll without running a poll and the overwhelming response seems to be that 'Dees" is well accepted by our own. Perhaps one poster was correct in saying that once we start plying and winning like Demons, Dees will take on a whole different connotation.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
