I laughed so hard when people saidd say he will dominate at Fremantle cos they are a 'good side'

Was never going to happen, and wont ever happen and its such a simplistic analysis

He will be lucky to play 15 games in the firsts and will see a lot of time in the WAFL

I still think Sylvia will do well at Freo despite his apparent initial failure to impress.

That said, I wonder if Michie would've been closer to senior selection at Freo than Sylvia had he stayed.

Anyone who thinks we wouldn't be better off with Rivers still at the club doesn't understand Australian Rules Football.

A perfect third key defender. Is one of the better readers of the play with his interception of kicks. His major weakness is playing on the gorillas/Trav Clokes of the league.

Well said and perfectly summarized.

Although his replacement in Gillies was a good move... ow wait <(^^~)>

The mind boggles! How big will OD get? :-) :-)

Fair degree of "crystal ball" there - you are assuming that Rivers is going to go backwards but also a number of footballers who havent shown much are all of a sudden going to improve and go past him.

Of course it's crystal balling, that's what having an opinion on our needs in a year or 2 is about. We will see in due course. Rivers hasn't exactly gone forwards since he left, for whatever reason, so I'd say my comments are pretty spot on.

Beyond this year we won't want many from that list.

Don't necessarily disagree, but i wouldn't be so presumptuous. Like nutbean said, fair degree of 'crystal balling' there. We will see.

I think the Sylvia for Vince trade - as it essentially was - will serve us very well.

Bernie Vince is a footballers footballer, he knows how to find the football and how to use it.

Vince is everything we need, he is predominately a midfielder, which is an area we struggle in - and an area where Sylvia was only just serviceable.

Sylvia's best position IMO was on the forward flank, however, when Hogan, Clark, Dawes come in, then we can shift Howe to one flank - and rotate our mids off the other flank.

Colin wasn't a great midfielder and our need for flankers in 2014 isn't as strong as it has been.

Vince's best football isn't far behind Nathan Jones, it's just that Vince doesn't quite have the consistency of Jones.

If we can get the best out of Bernie, then we'll be all the better for it.

I agree with what your saying. Vince is a far better footballer than Sylvia and has come from a club with a better cultute and when you break it down. Vince and sylvia are a similar player but one works harder.

Vince is a goal kicking mid fielder and that was what sylvia was being forced to become, so in terms for the "vince/sylvia" trade. Only time will tell but i think vince will for one deliver more on a consistent basis.. And sylvia will be in and out of the dockers side and play some great football but also go missing..

My issue was not whether Rivers would go backwards or forwards in his output, He is getting to the end of his career so you are rght to assume that his most productive years are probably him. What I did take exception to is the four footballers you suggested that would easily replace him and go past him. The footballers have either played limited or no football or have never reached any level nearing Rivers.

I was not unhappy with Rivers going as he gets a chance to play finals after serving us well. I would have liked to have kept him as we were lacking good footballers with experience but I don't think we feel his loss like we would a Jones or a Frawley.

Stuff on Rivers (how he managed to work his way into this thread is beyond me) is way off the mark.
Point in case: Round 8 2012.

Rivers, despite an ongoing avalanche coming into the forward 50, remonstrates with Sydney fans who mock his club and seems genuinely hurt by it's performance.

Sylvia laughs and jokes with the opposition after the siren.

That was enough for me.. Had enough of Sylvia after that.

Suddenly I see the similarity qqwith losing Syliva

A perfect midfielder, one of the best at finding space and delivering rapidly into the forward 50 or kicking goals. His major weakness is getting first hands on the ball and maintaining a consistent workrate overall.

Actually nutbean, you suggested the 4 footballers not me, and I didn't say they would "easily replace" Rivers or that they had reached his previous level. By any measure and for whatever reason, Rivers has certainly declined since he left Melbourne, and for that reason, many on your list would have shifted ahead of him had he still been with us. Moot point however, and purely an opinion. What he had that is difficult for us to replace is experience. On that point we are in agreement.

It's guaranteed that Col will play at least one stellar game for the Dockers - Round 16.

3 Brownlow votes sewn up already.

there is a long history of footballers departed from us that play one or two good games a season - against us !

Jeff Farmer, Beamer Moloney, Darren Jolly, Earl Spalding, I think I can remember Steven Armstrong even having a good one against us.

Michie was only going to be depth for them as long as Barlow, Fyfe, Mundy and Crowley stay fit and they have others like Lachie Neale and more. But Sylvia with his X factor can offer them a player who can take them up a level. He just needs to take the bad out of his game and keep the good in. Danyle Pearce did that for most of his year for Freo last year although he kind of stunk it up in the grand final.

I go back further - Brian Wilson at StKilda kicking the winning goal against us

I watched the game he just jogged behind the play like he has for 10 yrs , Freo have lost a spot on there list for 3 yrs and a fair amount of money.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
