N. Jones "would love to captain"

First post at Demonland, longtime lurker :) Didn't see anything posted about this yet, but Nate Jones gave an interesting answer to the tired Captaincy question at a rally presser today:

Q: It's obviously a job you'd be stoked to get, whether it be a co-captain or solo?

Yeah, no doubt. I think I said last week I'm willing to put my hand up. I would love to captain the footy club, there's no doubt about that, but I'll go through the process like everyone else, and firstly we've got to get voted into the leadership group (laughs). From there, we'll see what happens.

Read a lot here that people want him to captain but feel he's too introverted for the media commitments associated with the role. First time I've heard him say he wants to do it though.

Hi Lamashtu and welcome

I always thought he was an introvert but the more I hear from him the more I am impressed. Clearly his on-field performances warrant putting his hand up and I would simply love watching him bomb a few 'captains goals' on the run from 50 out which he loves doing. Imagine how much that would lift the troops!

In saying that though, I always have and always will have a soft spot for Grimesy. Have spoke with him once and was really wowwed (if thats not a word it should be) by his presence. Would be also happy for him to continue and believe it would be unfair for him to be stripped of it.

I have never been big on co captains but wouldn't mind if these two took the shared duties for the season.

Others who get frequently mentioned (Dawes, Garland etc) should form the leadership group which is starting to look stronger and more mature.

Firstly I couldn't give a stuff about the media commitments. It's whoever will lead the most effectively out on the park, is what I care about. I have found the best leaders are those that lead by actions, not words. Words are meaningless.

what's with the concern for his supposed 'introversion' is this a football club or Australian Idol? He is in our best players week in, week out, never gets injured, never hesitates to put his body on the line and is the most established senior player we have, he should have been made sole captain at the start of 2013. Frankly I couldn't give a toss about our captain's performance in the press conference 'yeah nah insert obvious cliche yeah nah' it is meaningless

Totally agree with regard to public persona and relevance to captaincy, I think it's way down on the list. But I would say Jones himself has admitted he hasn't always being an outgoing leader to all players as he's been highly focused on developing his own game. And that would be a concern to making him captain had he not already acknowledged and sought to rectify it.

Either way I fully expect the Jones and Grimes combination in 2014, it just makes perfect sense to me and they'd make a strong combination as leaders whilst also not getting overwhelmed and still being able to focus on their own games.

Wowed. Just one double-u too many mate. But it's definitely a word

The phrases "I have a dream" and "we will fight them on the beaches" are meaningless? If you truly think words are meaningless, then posting on a forum seems a pretty pointless exercise. You think a mute captain would be a good thing?

I guess it's because we're not trying to select our best player, our most consistent player, our least injury prone player, our "most established senior player" (?) or our hardest player.

It's about who is the better leader, and that alone.

Simple.

I agree to a point. I don't think it is meaningless. To Grimes' credit, he did a pretty good job fronting up to the media most weeks, trying to defend indefensible performances. Not everyone would have done as well.

It's an important aspect in terms of communicating to the supporters and the football public at large. Not only is Grimes a good communicator, but there's a resilience that comes through when he speaks. He does however need to back it up more on the field, so I would say co-captains for next season, with a further review at the end of the year. Jonesy has well and truly earned the call for 2014.

It will be Jones and Grimes as co captains (in my humble opinion).

Just me but I dislike the Co Captains thing.

Captain Jones

V C. Grimes

But in the end it is not something that worries me.

I agree Old Dee, i prefer one skipper. But i just don't think it would be fair to drop Grimes as captain.

I think that Grimes like Trengove should be allowed to develop their game ability without the added problem of being Captain.

IMO Grimes is a half back and Trengove a half forward.

Now that we have a number of new Mid field players I would prefer them as half backs and forwards respectively.

The last two years we have robbed Peter to pay Paul with these two.

I think they can be very good players if we stop trying to make them Mid fielders.

Perhaps but i am assuming he still wants the gig. I'd suggest Roos whispered in Trenners ear that he thought giving up the good would be wise. I don't reckon he's had the same conversation with Grimes.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
