That's a developer post, you can see people can agree, disagree, tag as awesome or insightful etc. You can hover over the tag to see who has tagged what.

I reckon something like that would be a great addition here, assuming the software and server could handle it.

It is good to have for when we debate and there are two diametrically opposed arguments and you want to largely agree with one side. When that happens we would have 25 'I agree' posts and it was cleaned up by the like button.

I find it amusing that anyone could possibly find a "like" annoying.

I do it a lot, as a sign of approval & agreeance.

There's many threads where I'll add a couple of "likes" and not post at all.

There are arguments pro and con. Myself, I don't care for them much and use them sparingly. One negative aspect can be that it encourages point scoring and IMO there is a pattern of posters swapping likes on just about everything. Can become sycophantic and peer influenced.

Then there are those who refrain from liking a post they do like because they don't like the poster and there are those who post populist comments to attract likes. And there are posters liking personal attacks and insults on others. I believe debate was more honest and sincere before they came along.

I wasn't here before they were introduced so can't speak for the quality or decline or debate.

I do think it cuts down on "agree" posts. You can get a sense of consensus from the amount of likes on an opinion. As with my example before, I think it's even better served by distinguishing between "like, agree, disagree, lol" etc.

I suppose if you don't find them useful, don't use them. They don't take up a large amount of space and aren't intrusive. I'll leave their affect on the quality of debate here to others.

Out of interest, from memory you could like a part on the forum mobile software, but you could not see the number of people who liked it. If the function cones back it would be helpful if we could see it on the mobile too!

Posters swapped 'pats on the back' via posts before the like button and there is still that now - Moonshadow/BBO/Biffen/and others constantly do this. If you are simply talking about posters that like the same posters over and over again that would be because they think alike. The button meant one less post.

Those that like personal attacks are judged as are those that make 'rah-rah' posts to get likes.

It may be more revealing of what the community thinks of an idea or argument as it meant that a post of agreement that was never going to be typed is now a 'like.'

That would make it more honest.

And this is an internet forum of anonymous posters - sincerity has no place here...
