The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

Free agency should run for 1 week, clubs would have worked out what free agents they would be interested in through the year or have the empty week the clubs get after the G/F to make decisions. If trade period starts say the following tuesday that gives clubs 3 days to decide if they will match the deal accepted from an opposition club if the player is a restricted free agent.

That way clubs know exactly what picks they have entering into trade week and have a better understanding of what they can give or propose in a trade.

2 weeks max for trade would be fine i believe.

I'll take well rounded every day, please.

If 'lack of skinny' was your drafting criterion, Fremantle wouldn't have taken Fyfe or Hill, Essendon wouldn't have taken Heppell, Collingwood wouldn't have taken Thomas and Richmond wouldn't have taken Cotchin.

I'd die for two or three of those.

Nudge won't post anymore because half the people here would pay out on him even though his rumours turned out to be true.

remember its a rumour page. Rumours can originate from one staff member at a club, a friend of an agent or player or even from erroneously interpreting something someone has said. And some are clearly just made up.

nudge posted some about us getting Dawes and he was hounded down if I remember. Turned out on the money.

The club read this site, I know because after I posted the early info on Roos becoming coach I received an email saying it wasn't entirely true (even though it was) and they said they saw I had posted it on Demonland. They knew who had been told, the staff member fessed up and put 2 and 2 together and then knew who I was.

I doubt there will be many other details coming out of the club.

I myself saved a tobogganist on Buller the other day that insisted the club wanted to recruit recently sacked dean Wallace to be our 'angry Phil read' style mongrel coach.

The only free agent who might take more than a week to move, if he moves at all, will be Dal. The delisted free agents are different though, as clubs may wait to see how the rest of the trade period goes before deciding. So maybe free agency goes for a week, then the trade period (2 weeks max), then the delisted free agency period.

They may read it but I doubt they'd take any notice of us.

They should, we are usually on the money: we pick everyone so we have to get some of it right.

If Demonland had its way we would have a 200 player list.

All those teams already had the luxury of big bodied midfielders when they drafted those slimmer blokes. We should have picked up bulk first and then focused on more outside runners or skinnier 'project' types.

Sam Landsberger ‏@SamLandsberger 2m

Talk that the Dees would love to downgrade pick 2 for a quality mid and a pick which could still see them snag Kade Kolodjashnij. Unlikely.

Would love this.

Would take the pick 2 to Collingwood for 10 and 11, trade 11 for Myers and use 10 on Kolodjashnij

Who were the big bodied midfielders Richmond had when they took Cotchin? Shane Tuck?

Freo completely rebuild their midfield moving Mundy in their and grabbing Barlow.

Which was actually what we did. At the time we picked Morton, Bennell, Gysberts, Scully etc we had a few one-paced big-bodied inside mids (Brock, Junior, Moloney and Sylvia, as well as Jones), but as a midfield it was unbalanced and we needed outside pace & class.

We then proceeded to get rid of the former one by one, leaving us unbalanced in the other direction. I know there were other reasons for getting rid of Brock Junior and Moloney, but it had the cumulative effect of making the "outside-mid" picks utterly useless.

Stupid short-sighted list management. It's the difference between building a list (of individuals) and building a team (that knits together). And building a team is what Roos excels in.

This link is from an article in the Sun, http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/melbourne-coach-paul-roos-says-clubs-could-start-trading-their-stars-early/story-fni5f91a-1226735616834

Roos makes a couple of very interesting points. With lousy compensation for free agents clubs will trade players in the last year of their contract if they don't want to extend their existing contract. Is that a message to any of our players in this position? The article then goes on to quash any thoughts of Rockliff being recruited, saying "Roos adamant Melbourne will part with selection two for a young midfielder. The Demons have inquired about Brisbane’s Tom Rockliff who has declined their offer, with West Coast’s Luke Shuey also not available despite overtures".

Fairly definitive statement IMO

I think he said he wasn't going to do it any more.

Such a shame, his thread last year was probably the best thread of the whole trade/draft period.

Yeah it bloody sh*ts me people pay him out! I for one loved his feed, understandably many never eventuated although there were always some that were either spot on or very close.

It's frustrating reading the trolls (often a particular consistent few) that either lack imagination or are jealous that he obtains more post "likes" in his short annual stay than they do over a year.

I would consider his annual thread one of the best reads on this site.

I hope he's not talking about James Frawley.

Hence my trade or re-sign Frawley thread.

When a club puts up an unmatchable offer for Frawley next year all we get is an end of first round pick.

There's an article on melbournefc quoting Frawley saying it's time the players step up.

Well it's time you step up James. Offer him the big contract 5 years 3.5-4 million and tell him he either signs it or we look to trade him now.

Ok 2 put you all out of your misery I was speaking to a Sandy Dragons official today, he said and I quote " Your Mr Roos has spoken to Nate (Freeman) and said there is no reason why we won't take him at pick 2 unless we traded it before hand!" The word (I have heard) out of the club is that unless we can get Dylan Shiels we are keeping pick 2. So from that it is Shiels or Freeman, a win situation!

We should try and trade pick 2 and 21(Sylvia compo) to the pies for picks 10, 11, 31 and Shaw.

If not shaw ask for Sam Dwyer.

Then we could get 2 of Freeman, Crouch Kolodjashnij or Sheed along with Shaw or Dwyer.

We could still get Zak Jones with pick 20, Dayle Garlett with 31 and Trade 38 for Michie.

Cross delisted free agent. I would love Chapman too but it seems the clubs not interested unfortunately.

At the end of trades and drafting we could have:

Freeman

Crouch

Dwyer / Shaw

Jones

Garlett

Michie

Cross

Hogan

It looks good to me, our midfield would improve a lot!

I read this as a warning to Frawley. I reckon he's trying to get him to commit to a contract extension early.

Fairly definitive statement IMO

A statement proffered by the Ralph, not Roos.

Not sure about Freeman I know that we have been following Josh Kelly for 2 years keeping an eye on his development and I would be shocked if we still had pick 2 and didn't pick him.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
