Are you serious started coaching in early 20's after serious knee injury ended his career, won a Sandover at 18 in his first full season.

Took East Fremantle to Premiership in 1974 before moving on to Swan Districts in the late 70's who were the basketcase of the WAFL at the time, after a tough time took them to consecutive finals appearances from 80-85 including runners up in 1980 & 3peat Premiers in 82/83 & 84. Some may say this is only WAFL but at this time the WAFL went through a golden era with players such as Maurice Rioli, Stephen Michael (best player never to play VFL/AFL), Graham Moss, Steve Malaxos, Simon Beesley, Phil/Jim Krakouer, Brad Hardie, Brian Peake, Kevin Mitchell, Gary Sidebottom, Phil Narkle, Allen Daniels, Tony Buhagier, Graham Melrose,Nicky Winmar among others.

Took Meth Coast to their first finals appearance in 1988 and after went back to Swans in 1990 to coach them to a Flag. Returned to his original club South Fremantle and coached them to a flag in 1997 before heading into retirement.

Sorry Jazza way off the mark with John Todd in this category, a true great of the game in WA and from teh old school hymn book of coaches.

Thompson showed the skills in 2004 which has been evident since he has been at Adelaide. He is that first dibs midfielder we needed then and have needed now but never had. He played the first 13 games before going down with injury. MFC were 10 and 3 and top 4 on the ladder. When Thompson went down we won 4 out of 9 and feebly fell in the EF. Up until Hogan we have not drafted an A grade player since Thompson.

Thats rubbish, next year when Chip comes out of contract he will be the most sort after player in Australia, that doesn't happen to BGraders.

Interesting comparison with Grant Thomas. He was instrumental in sacking Wayne Schimmalbusch at north Melbourne mid season, when he was chairman of selectors.

Went to St Kilda where he was assistant coach.

Blight got sacked mid-season. Thomas became coach. Just sayin...

But at no time was Thomas thought of as a mentor. Just the survivor.

Craig on the other hand....

As a coach being a manager of men you'd think he'd have manager skills, he also has knowledge of fitness and sports science so in a lot of ways he would be well set up to take over that role. However if there is someone who has been experienced in that role before and also comes as a package deal as a preferred operator of the new coach they might be a better investment.

It's not impossible and there are some obvious positives, the biggest being that his original role and peronality is well liked. Knows the players well and been on the front line quite a bit (always down on the ground, not in the box).

Has had an impressive record and CV.

Who knows. Its realistically out of Choko, Eade, Roos and Craig.

I'd like Choko but feel that he has had too long out of AFL. He has been coaching at Coburg but got a feeling his best days are behind him.

So really, Eade, Roos or Craig.

I think it will be part up to him and how he sees his future. He has been more hands on in previous roles so will he like the admin stuff but you would think he has the experience and capacity to do a good job.

I said I would not speculate on the interim coach or the future coach of MFC and I have not.

The interim coach is in place and I accept the choice, however Craig has not even coached a game and he is making noises about being senior coach next year.

My comment that I would not speculate on the future coach was based on the assumption that Craig would go with Neeld, or at least not be a candidate for the senior coaching position in the future - he may have another role to play at MFC in future, who knows.

However, IMO Craig should not be considered for the senior coaching role at MFC - he had early success at Adelaide, but then it all went bad, and that should be a warning sign for MFC!

He was asked this question at today's presser, which he ruled out completely.

It will be interesting when the new coach comes along (if not Craig) whether he'll be kept or stick around as high performance coach. My guess is that if he doesn't get the job he'll be gone.
