Now I was last year in the "please don't go near" camp, but after this year... well not sure we could do much worse.

Has been playing some great footy in the WAFL which I believe is pretty close with VFL standards.

Could we do any worse?

It sounds like a lot of his stability is coming from the family surrounding him. Would he do as well on the other side of the country? Would he backslide without them supporting him? It could be that he is going to be another freeby to WC or Freo because they are close to his family and as such are able to continue his support systems.

Still, if we are happy that he will keep his head together I would be thrilled to have him in the red and blue. He's a hell of a player and would be more or less ready to go at this point.

I thought this topic would come back from the dead. Worth a mid to late pick if he is still there. We are in the position where we have to take risks and pull them off in order to stay alive.

If any club shoot take the punt on him it is us - We will just have to keep two eyes on him and maybe a contract with a clause.

I thought we should've rookied him last year and left him in WA with a WAFL club until he got his act together.

Unfortunately he's a player who you couldn't trust until he shows he's matured and by then he won't be a cheap pick up.

Don't kid yourself I have seen him live not much has changed slight improvement but still needs to do a lot more, especially when he does not have the ball. One thing I will give him though he has improved off field but long way to go yet!

I thought we should have drafted him last year. I was screaming at the radio when he was still around towards the end of the draft and then wasn't picked up in to rookie draft either.

Sure you can go on about how he was a very bad boy, with all his problems, etc. and that we as a club wouldn't be able to set him on the straight and narrow. But i thought then what has only been further enhanced now. When you are a club as bereft of talent as we are, you get it onto your list just about any way you can. We are so shite right now, we are not in a position to pick and choose.

He was an absolute talent last year, and is backing up again this year. Would have more talent than our lowest 35 players put together (i [censored] you not). Plus he is exactly what we need. A small forward, who is lightning quick, with unbelievable skills, doesn't mind the rough stuff and can run through the middle. He liked to drink, smoke and stay out late? Well 2 of those 3 and you have a Sylvia, Moloney, McLean (when he was with us).

Good luck to him, he deserves his chance.

I shuttered at the thought of picking him last year thinking it was the last thing our young list would need. I also had an opinion that he would never make anything of himself, just have a sulk and we would never hear of him again.

Now I haven't seen him play this year at all, Pennant St Dee you have and say he doesn't work hard off the ball. Surely this is something you learn more as you get older? Considering there is no tagging allowed in TAC comps (and I am sure it's the same in the WA equivalent) I'd say most players out of these systems don't work hard enough off the ball when they come into the big leagues.

Once upon a time Demonland was split between who to make captain for our beloved dees. Brad Green or Aaron Davey. There was a lot of faith in Flash being able to complete the job. Sure he squibbed a contest, struggled breaking a tag and went missing for a couple years but he is still a hugely loved figure around the club and is highly respected by his team mates. Every training session I have been too you can see the way his team mates lift when he does something good. They love him.

I really think Flash would be super at mentoring Dayle and Dayle would love every moment of the support he would get.

I think we need to take a punt on him. We desperately need talent, any form and this kid oozes it.

The two boys you mentioned were both high risk high reward, very sad they didn't work out but both are involved in some of my most enjoyable moments of being a supporter over the last few years. Even when we were bad, they entertained and gave a reason to go to the games.

Would love that Pennant if you could complete a report for us, would be simply fantastic

Sounds like a good plan. What I'd judge him on would be whether he can win the ball under pressure, work his butt off to get the ball and whether he can put on defensive pressure. It's clear as day he has the skills when he gets it.

I don't think anyone could've saved those 2 indigenous boys. Wona just had too much community pressure to stay home after he lost his most important father figures. Then the same for Liam when his family fell apart.

The question for Garlett is why he felt the need to go have a bender just days before Essendon were set to rookie him. Does he have family troubles or some other underlying issue.. Or is it as simple as he's never had the right attitude and work rate and therefore if he can get that he'll be set. Michael Walters grew up in the same street as Yarran and NicNat, now it was reported as a bit of a rough area and it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't have an easy child hood. So when he gets into the AFL he isn't the most motivated or hardest worker but with time Ross Lyon has obvious got him switched on and he's now on fire (prior to injury). Could Garlett be the same?

Okay as promised went to the game today, which was a thriller close all day and Swans kicked the last 3 goals to win by 4 points and keep their finals hopes alive. Perth were the better side for most of the day but Swans hung in there and never gave up. I missed the first ten minutes so did not see Garlett's first goal, but he had a good game ended the day with 6 goals and 20 odd disposals

First point I will make is Garlett actually looks fit now, he could have been accused of being a bit soft with some skin fold issues before but today was the leanest I have seen him and his pace has improved. Notes I made today

First Quarter

15mins: Long ball into Swans forward line several players contest for a mark while Garlett peels off about 5 metres into space at front of the pack as opponents gets caught ball watching the contest, ball breaks to Garlett who quickly gathers and snaps an opportunist goal from 15 out direct in front. Smart play here to get into space this was instinct and not something you can teach

27mins: makes repeated leads, doubling back a couple of times to loose his opponent and create space and receive pass outside 50, plays the % rather than blazing away hits hit to the top of the square, but ball is punched through for a point

2nd Quarter

8mins: Doesn't run hard enough across half forward opponent makes a hard run across half back to receive handpass from CHB and hit a pass to lead up half forward for easy rebound from defence

12mins: Half paced lead opponent runs harder and beats Garlett easily to the ball and rebounds

14mins: Standing still and walking while opponent is free and receives pass to help clear the ball

16mins: doesn't chase opponent hard enough and ball is cleared, Swans end up winning ball back and Garlett continues walking without trying to provide an option or lead

with ball only 15/20m away

25mins: shows great pace and determination to close in on opponent clearing form defence lays a tackle just as ball is cleared very unlucky not to cause turnover

26mins: shows lack of urgency when ball is pumped into Swans forward line, attacks ball but is caught behind opponent who attacks ball with venom and marks strongly.

27mins: Gathers the ball outside 50 after finding space and has acres of room, blazes away laconically from 50m and misses when could have easily run closer in and kicked a goal.

28mins: Ball kicked into forward line and decides not to contest mark opponent spills easy mark and Garlett gathers dropped ball dodges through two defenders to kick a quality goal

3rd Quarter

12mins: provides outlet at half back flank and gathers ball, spears a pass between half forward and wing great passage of play, but then lets himself down by jogging through corridor thinking he has done enough, when hard second effort would have provided an option through corridor and again when ball is in hands of Swans player in the pocket Garlett jogs when there is space at CHF near 50 where he should have provided an option.

14mins: Shows his class again crumbing from a spill in a pack and snaps a terrific goal

15mins: Same as 2nd quarter does not chase opponent across half back and allows him to gather from team mate and clear the ball from defence

19mins: Gathers ball around Half back and hits team mate with sweet pass, again jogs forward and does not provide option across half forward when opportunity presents. The ball spills in Garletts direction but is handballed to a defender approx. 20m away, Garlett puts on a burst of speed to run down opponent who manages to get his kick away but due to pressure provided it goes to a contest and gets turned over on the wing and comes back into Swans forward line.

27mins: Again opts to float around a pack contesting a high ball in, ball spills towards Garlett who gathers and goals

4th Quarter

Perth are dominant for most of the quarter and get out to what seems to be a match winning lead Garlett is fairly quiet during this period but Swans start to get on top of clearances and through the middle

23mins: Leads really hard from half forward to deep between wing/half back provides option to get relieve pressure on defence, shows poise and waits for option before spearing a pass into corridor and Swans break forward resulting in a point but real quality move from defence to attack

26mins: Stays away from the ball and spreads defence allowing team mate to gather ball after he beats opponent to the ball Garletts direct opponent is forced to leave him and move to Swans player who handballs over the top to Garlett who kicks from the square, Perth lead cut to 3 points

29mins: Swans hit the front and lead by 3 points

30mins: Shows real class to gather ball around LHFF and runs to about 25 metres out and shoots from tight angle for a behind. Showed a lot of class in this move but my criticism here is he had only previously been pointing to his wrist stating time was nearly up and they needed to preserve their lead. Garlett knew the siren was near and could easily have run the ball out as he tapped around the boundary. Perth ended up taking the kick in and managed to get the ball down to their half forward line when the siren went. Went with flare here rather than play the %, but then again it was class the way he gathered the ball.

Assessment:

No doubt he is classy player, has great sense around goal and has silky skills. Speed is not an issue cover ground really well when he wants to but lacks a tank and does not gut run. Has obviously put in a lot of work in the last few months and has trimmed down to the fittest I have seen him. Whilst I have said he does not gut run today he made a few strong leads and applied pressure to opposing players which was lacking in his game previously so big plus for today.

On todays effort you would take him but not with an early pick, AFL defenders do not drop easy marks which occurred today with 3 of his goals but he took his opportunities so you can't fault him. As the saying goes one swallow doesn't make a summer so will see if he can continue this form. I am aware Swans have made real efforts with him off field and it showed with improved fitness, the chase and leads he made today were non existent last year and while he needs to do them more and be more consistent there is a lot to work with.

He will be drafted this year and wont slip through to rookie or pre season draft once he maintains his on field performance. Weakness in his game at AFL level will be defenders at that level being able to run off him and hurt the other way, but they will need to be conscious of him on the rebound, he does not need a lot of room and can be deadly around goal. Played today around half forward flank, time at full forward 1 out deep and small stints around half back and wing.

Out of 10 I would give him 8 with room for more improvement, but I do mark harshly due to his god given talent

Have to say Byrnes, based on last year, Garlett thought it was all just going to happen for him, he had a [censored] attitude on and off the field. The rejection may have been just what he needed.
