It would have been a damning recruit if BP was in charge and had taken him at #4 (Which is something he potentially could have done)

Please don't twist what I say like that, it ain't cool

I am not twisting what you say. I am just saying that perhaps you shouldn't use a recent MFC recruit as the butt of a 'joke' about Prendergast.

Why not use him as my example? Skinny talented kid with potential rated 2nd - 3rd rounder. Perfect BP first round recruit.

Talk about going all high and mighty,

You turned 'If BP was still in charge he would potentially take Barry at #4' into

'you shouldn't use a recent MFC recruit as the butt of a 'joke'

over reacting much? and yes that is twisting what I said but if you want to see it that way then go for your life.

Toumpas - does everything well. Good pace, great kick, great decisions, great runner, real leader.

O'Rourke (183cm) - classier than Wines. Quicker and a better kick, but also a good contested ball winner.

Wines (188cm/90kg) - big bodied mid who excels at winning contested footy and distributing to others. Solid skills, but not elite.

Grundy (202cm/100kg) - athletic ruckman with a healthy dose of nastiness. Will play a lot of senior footy in his first year.

Macrae (189cm) - smooth moving tall and quick outside left footer with fantastic evasive ability and a knack of kicking goals. Great kick.

Thanks for this.

Im leaning to Wines, good height, good weight, moves well from what ive seen on the computer and, from what you have said re skills, room for improvement.

Also given Viney and Wines relationship this would be good both on and off the field

I was taking what you said at face value, olisik.

Didn't like it and said so.

Move on.

Anyone as crazy as me and prepared to take a risk on Stringer at 4? He's my boy.

Yes but like you I think my attachment to young Jake is clouding my judgment. :)

If his impaired movement from this year rolls over to the next he will not get a senior game, regardless of his immense talent and size.

I can wait around for a potential star if I need to and I think Jake is one of them. But not two. And I prefer Hogan to Stringer anyway.

GRUNDYGRUNDYGRUNDYGRUNDYGRUNDYGRUNDYGRUNDYGRUNDYGRUNDY!

You don't get elite 202cm types as often as you get elite mids. Going for anything other than Grundy is avoiding the best player to fill a perceived need.

It is a great pity that GWS will certainly take him with one of their first 3 picks.

Wines for me. From what I've read and heard about him he is a perfect 'fit' for Neeld's plan to make Melbourne "the hardest team in the AFL to play against" and I really like that plan.

Absolutely the perfect fit for what we need. If he's still there at 4 I'm certain we'll call his name.

Again I think Whitfield / Grundy / Toumpas are 1,2,3

Oliver Wines is the our choice for Pick 4, as he is physically ready, loves the contest, can get the footy (over & over again), good skills, effective use of handball, and decision making. The fact that his character is A grade and he is good mates with Jack Viney are a bonus. He also has no history of injuries and so ticks all our requirements.

Jimmy Toumpas is the one we want purely because his ability to win contested ball is better than Wines' acceleration and kicking ability...

Jimmy is the complete package but I reckon he'll be gone by 3. Fingers crossed.

Toumpas would be my first preference. All round game, can win the ball, run & carry and deliver with precision. I'd pick him ahead of Whitfield. GWS can take both. Can only wait to see if they do.

If he's off the table, then it's whichever of Wines & Grundy are available. Wines (with Viney) embodies the image of the Melbourne Footy Club that Need has been tring to sell from day 1. I can see the attraction. It also fits the profile of what GWS have been bringing into their club as well. Would not be surprised to see him taken before pick 4.

Grundy's a beauty. It's rare for young rucks to have as complete a game at this stage of their development, even rarer when they're a late starter to AFL.

Plowman and Stringer are the one's we'll most likely miss on that will be massive bargains for whoever gets them. I will most likely be extremely jealous of those clubs.

Can we just go back and time and pretend that Andrew Gaff is still available at Pick 4 and take him instead? Cos he's the type we need!

Gaff is a gun.. And a Melbourne supporter.. Hopefully we can temp him home end of his current contract...

One of:

- Toumpas

- Wines

- Macrae

- O'Rouke

- Mayes

Really, all I want is a 200 game midfielder, that's not too much to ask for, is it?

In reality I haven't seen these kids enough to say whether I want one over another, but I hope they take a kid who has a heap of passion for the game and can play at a really high intensity

Toumpas is best of that lot, but will likely be gone by our pick. I'm actually thinking O'Rourke might be best suited for us. We already have a few tough nuts, but not much class. O'Rourke is a well rounded player who's got great pace, skills and decision making. He can play inside or out, so would be handy to have and fill whatever role needed.

Either way with one of O'Rourke, Toumpas or Wines we SHOULD be getting a good midfielder to give us over a decade of service.

Perceived need? Jamar, Gawn, Martin, Spencer and even Sellar might not agree.

Our REAL need is a gun midfielder or two who, in time, will become a Swan, Pendles, Mitchell, Watson or Judd.

O'Rourke or Wines for me.

Not keen on using a high draft pick on a ruckman, particularly when we are still in such need of high quality midfielders.

I always think of Carlton when its Ruckman vs Midfielder. Now Kruezer is no spud, but he looks like the retarded offspring of Uncle Fester and Amy Winehouse in comparison to Cotchin.

From what Harrington has said i think we will be picking a Midfielder

I would pick Toumpas if still available ahead of Wines but Grundy IMO is the safest bet of the lot

Our luck has got to change with a player this early in the draft to make an immeadiate impact on the competition

Irrespective of who we draft at pick 4 Jack Viney, Jesse Hogan and Dominic Barry IMO is something to get enthuisiastic

about especially with the addition of some experience

If we draft Grundy it will be a mistake I think, we'll be overloaded with talls. We need a quality midfielder who can make an impact right away and that player is Oliver Wines.

It seems that Wines or Toumpas are the favourite picks here if available at 4. We are thinking GWS will take Whitfield, Toumpas and Grundy. If they take Wines instead of Grundy then the field opens up quite a bit. My thoughts are we need to get a quality mid and MacRae might well be the answer, quick, good kick, inside and outside player who wins his own ball, plays well in the big games (best on ground GF).

Would love Toumpas but will probably be gone by our pick, not unhappy with Wines, Grundy hard to pass up but our needs are more for mids, MacRae, O'Rourke, Stringer, there are a few other good players that will be available.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
