Cale Morton for Brett Meredith

I don't like blanket statements so a great deal of what is written in here about Cale is BS.

He provides something we lack - namely outside run and uncontested possessions.

He needs to improve other areas of his game as his physicality can be deplorable and his intensity at the contest can be just as bad.

Unless we get some outside run back, I would persevere with him.

Actually thought he showed a bit ... over about 4-5 weeks. His intensity was ok, and he was tackling ok, unfortunately it ended with that incident where he had a terrible turnover under pressure that copped the fury of Mark Neeld. Think he lost a lot of confidence, and shortly afterwards did his shoulder and went out for the rest of the season.

Would not be devastated if he left, but certainly good enough to remain with the playing group and improve alongside the rest of the list.

I have supreme confidence that Cale will be a very good AFL player in time. The question is whether this club has any confidence in itself to iron out his remaining kinks, or whether someone else will get all the benefits. If Cale gets a smooth, injury free pre-season, a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised this year. I know nothing about Brett Meredith, but a fair trade for a player with those stats would be Bennell.

Brett Meredith doesn't get much ball, doesn't kick goals, doesn't lay tackles... why exactly do so many of you guys think this would be a worthwhile trade? If the club is so hell bent on getting rid of Morton I'd rather spec a 4th round pick. That said, I think Cale has huge potential upside (he is still only 22) and would persevere with him under Neeld and Misson for a little longer before discarding him. Would love to assess him with a full pre-season and some confidence under his belt.

You're right that he had a few good weeks. I'd persevere if all we are getting is another NQR.

Neeld's fury following that turnover was because Cale had ignored a basic team rule, to go long and wide when no clear option is available. Cale attempted a Trapper style pass that, as with Trapper, did not (always) come off.

One more year for Cale unless a great trade offer looms. Has a chance to improve his trade value with another pre-season.

Sorry Oucher, but if he's prone to losing confidence that easily he's not up to AFL level. That's not to say Meredith would be any better, and based on most of the views expressed here, that seems unlikely.

Problem with Morton is he's a heartbreaker. His decisionmaking at times is deplorable, and it costs us momentum. Give him about 20kg and a better brain and you'd have a real player.

In all my years watching Australian Rules football I could count on one hand the list of more incompetent players I've seen.

If he was pick 44 he would have been dumped without question and without batting an eyelid. I get the impression those that "see something" in him are living more in hope rather than concrete evidence.

Delist and move on. What a monumental stuff up. If another club wants to trade for him (which I highly doubt), take whatever's offered and run.

I don't really see the outrage that many do on demonland about Morton.

If we trade him so be it, if that doesn't pan out, he's still contracted and he can play out his contract in the 2's trying to improve his game. And if he does start playing well chuck him in the side, if not, delist. Pretty elementary if you ask me.

Precisely - we would get like for like. Would seriously far prefer a mid range pick. But I have become fatigued by waiting for the "huge potential upside". If a spray from a coach for a stupid costly act can as has been said dent his confidence for the remainder of a season, it would appear that he doesn't have the psychological fortitude necessary for AFL. I don't want to argue the merits of keeping Morton vs trading him for a pick, but this is a slightly unfair appraisal of Morton. Not always a great user of the footy, some unbelievable clangers definitely, but as a 22yo averages about 20 touches a game across his career. Would be in the top 5 on our list for that stat and he spreads better than most in the side. I also think his confidence is less to do with a spray here and there and more to do with no continuity from having interrupted pre-seasons and mid season injury problems.

What a joke you are. You're willing to write off a guy who broke his leg and than fought and deserved his way back into the team saying he is too nervous under pressure, yet you advocate keeping the guy who's been given 50 chances and has shown only something in about 2 games. Strauss' disposal efficiency over his career is 84%, Morton's is high 60's.

The best day off this trade period would be seeing the back of this weak, useless liability and he is a human metaphor of what's been wrong with our club since 2007 (ironically also the year he came here).

I'm really "Cale Morton" about Cale Morton. On fleeting occasions I'm wild about his prospects and then mostly I go all soft and flaccid and move onto something else rather than hit the contest.
