FAREWELL BRENT MOLONEY

The compo picks for this years F/A have to be used in this years draft.

It was noted in a article a while back saying that Collingwood would receive a crappy pick if they are to lose Cloke to the F/A, because of their position on the ladder.

You don't really think he is worth a compo pick do you?

Pretty sure every club that loses a player to FA is compensated with a pick, it's part of the system...

we are going to have to spend Big this year & next as a start to get the ball rolling. But the top clubs will be squeezed out because of cap restrictions pretty quick. MFC plays it smart we can counter with 1-2 lucrative deals hopefully.

Agree...as long as money is a large factor in the player's decision and there are almost no other suitors coming close.

It's a sad reality.

Can we bundle all our compo picks up and turn it into one kick-arse pick like that?

I would have thought all our players lost through FA would have been worth a copy of Dolly magazine and a half eaten Twirl.

Our best bet this year is to take no FA at all. If we can get our net loss of players high enough we will get pick 5 as compensation. Much better than a NQR FA.

If we could achieve that I would be ecstatic. I would then offer pick 120 to Cats for Byrnes so as not to upset the compo process. Yes they can trade him if he agrees.

The compo is done by deducting the players you get from the ones you lose on a value formula and then you get a pick. Rivers and Moloney would gain high compo together if we don't get anyone as a FA.

Bit harsh on the Twirl !

I doubt Geelong would jeopardise a possible FA compo for pick 120. If they have no potential FA deficit then they may oblige though.

2 things the AFL have made plain:

- Compensation picks will be lower than a player's perceived worth. Clubs have known this all along

- Compensation picks reflect the net loss to club (not individual player loss).

Eg. Saints lose Goddard but gain Monfries (for the sake of argument). Their compensation would be lessened because Monfries is added to the team giving them something like a 2nd round pick (that's a guess)

Yep. This is why I'd rather see us take nobody during free agency. We need to maximise our compensation. The loss of Moloney, Rivers and Bate should be enough to warrant top compensation, but that could be ruined if we go and pick up a short-term stop-gap player like Rodan or Lynch.

From my perspective we have no problem but Moloney has one.

If we are , as is likely, to have a dip in the well then the real value to us is the space and affordability of another player. Any net result or windfall from FA( comp pick ) isnt going to , in our case be that much anyway. Resultant pick was never going to be world shattering.

Am not particulalry concerned. No one should be

do you want another 2012?

We need players now. Stop gap is fine. In 2 years trade for more.

Sitting around waiting & doing norhing will kill this club. FCS.

We can get stopgap players by trading for them. There are more and better players up for grabs in the trade period than there are in Free Agency. If all else fails we can grab a delisted player or two in November for free. We don't need to do anything in the Free Agency period at all and we will come out winners.

mate we need to do as much trading as we can. A John Butcher this week would be great. Up to 15 players should be moved. We should also be aggressive in November.

John Butcher is not a FA and not available this week, if he is at all it will be via a trade. As I've said before, I don't think we are going to be as active as some think but we will be focussed looking for another Clark type deal and a good draft. To me this is a better way to build the club.

Agreed.

Read today that the swans have made 33 changes to their list in the past 3 years.

You can make changes to your list without bringing in Free Agents. Maximising our FA compo improves our ability to trade and draft, which are the usual methods of doing this.

Based on the assumption that we stack all those leaving the club and hope the AFL gives us the top band pick which *could* be worth pick 5. I really don't see it happening, nor do I see it outweighing 2-3 shrewd free agency intakes. Shrewd is the key bit here, we have to make sure they are enhancing the list.

But I still think getting a couple of productive years out of say 2-3 free agents will do more for our list than a player in the draft who won't add value for a couple of years at best. But moreso... we have 3 first round picks, and we stand a good chance of getting Viney in the second round. We should get the more from the the 2012 draft than almost any other club you wish you mention anyway.

Oh kay... so some of us aren't learning our lessons here. Look at how Melbourne have sought to build our list over the last 5 years by playing for high draft picks and compare that to how the Swans have gone about it, bringing in second tier players from other clubs and turning them into quality role players. Adam Goodes is the only star on that team and an aging one at that yet they beat the star-studded Hawks in the Grand Final with a bunch of role players. It's definitely time we start rethinking how we go about putting our team together.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
