Brad Green 250 AFL Games

On a positive note this week is Brad Greens 250th game. Although the last 2 seasons have been pretty lean I think we should remember what a great player he has been for this club. Still remember him beating Carlton off his own boot in 2000.

Hes been a fine role model for the youngsters since he was drafted and has been a fine figure for this great footy club.

I for one will be there on sat and although I dont agree that it happens I hope the boys give it their all, and get up for the former skipper.

Great news for Brad. As you say it's worth remembering the good times the club has been through over the course of his career, not least the fact that he's the last man standing from the 2000 Grand Final side.

Congratulations Brad. Selction 19 in the 1999 draft, the Aaron Fiora draft. 250 games including that enjoyable 2000 finals series, the last time I was able to go to the footy with my old man. Once was questioned on his "toughness" never his skill. MFC leading goal kicker in 2010, Bluey Truscott medalist 2010, MFC captain 2011, International rules player 2004-2011 and captain of the squad in 2011.

Here is hoping we see a few more flashes like qtr 1 on the weekend of those 250 games.

Well done Brad, richly deserved. I feel almost personally sorry that you've spent the last 5 years getting familiar with the bottom of the ladder, just shows how unfair the footy world can be. Perhaps I've listened to WYL tell me it's my fault we suck one too many times

Great that he gets to play it on form too - it looked for a while that we'd have to gift it to him. He's played well for the last couple.

It's an interesting one Choko. For most of the year I thought that the game had gone way past him, and believed that this would be the last time we see Greeny running around in the red and blue. Through poor form he was sent back to Casey, then had a troubled run with injury. To his creedit, and it shows as much about the bloke he is as well as his ability, he worked his arse off, got back in to the senior team, and is playing reasonable footy.

I thought about it on Saturday night - there aint many times in his career where he hasn't given 100%. Unfortunately now, depending on his opponent, 100% will either see him comprehensively beaten, or come out with even points, the odd game he may even win his battle.

Is this type of player worthy of getting 1 more year? I will sit on the fence. Part of me would love to see him go around once more, because you generally know what you are going to get with him (unlike a number of other players). Part of me wants him to do with dignity at the end of this year (would hate to see him finish his career playing a solid chunk of the season at Casey, which could happen in 2013).

Tough one for the list management team, tough decision for Greeny, I don't think they can make a "wrong" decision with this one. Very much like the Junior scenario, although hopefully this time they will involve the player a bit more in the decision making process.

But the writing is on the wall and this year is your last. I hope you make that call rather than the Club do it for you. Enjoy your retirement.

Been thinking about this. Its an interesting one.

We are not blessed with an excess of mature players able toprovide the type of mentorship and stewardship often wished for at this club.. Whilst I didnt rate Green that highly as a captain I certainly think he has leadership, it just wasnt suited to gameday.

Depending, and this is the qualifier, depending; on how the clean out goes and how the club NOW views these things and on the presumption the Rookie list remains I wouldnt be adverse to the idea that Green is mature-rookied. It would be up to him and the club. I dont think hed be taking away anyones job there but he might be able to take a few kids and show them some footy nouse. If ravaged again by injury the team could call him up.

Its only an idea. Not even promoting it as the best one. Some may simply suggest , thanks and go. That would be fine also.

If the Club removed him from the leadership group this year after being captain this year then its unlikely he will be kept on for "leadership" reasons as a mature rookie. The Club does not see him as a leader. A complete waste of a valuable rookie spot.

If they believe he has mnetoring capabilities then give him an ex officio role in his retirement.

You would hope the club is always open to revise its thinkings in terms or how things have actually panned out.

The decision to remove Green was made at the beginning of year. It was done to focus on the youth etc etc etc. It was also as demonstrative as it was effectual.

Im not sure its been an unqualified success..

Anex officio role may well cater to the benefits also.

All im suggesting is lets hope the club , and indeed Green , thinks about his clearly and completely. I want the best outcome for the club. I feel Green has deserved to be repsected. We balls up so much inthe past. Lets learn, lets get smarter.

Whilst I think Brad has had a pretty ordinary start to the year, I think he has copped his whack, and lifted his head and done pretty well at the end of the season.

That said I am not totally convinced that he will go on next year. I recall Brad Johnson had a decent year prior to the one where he retired, but his final year was very bad, he looked slow, was injured and really should have not been playing seniors, but its a very bad look to make a player like that play out in the reserves.

The tricky part of it will be what happens at the end of the year..... If players like Moloney, Bate, Dunn etc are cut or decide to go elsewhere on free agency, then we might need Green to go again, Similarly if they land Cloke ... would there be a spot up forward with Clark, Cloke, Martin, Howe Jurrah etc... and can he play elsewhere?

I just don't want to see a Bruce or JMac situation again.... and as such I hope he gets to make the call on his career before the club has to.

I find this amusing that some are saying that this is Green's last year and that we hope that he makes the decision and isn't forced by the Club, yet people (I'm not saying you in particular RR) continue to whinge about letting McDonald go a year early. What was Junior doing that Green isn't? I personally believe Green's potential to be able to run one more season out (ie play approx 15 games) is a lot higher than Junior's was in his "last" year.

To keep Green for one more isn't going to arm us too greatly. He is on the veteran list, is costing us bugger all (especially if we can negotiate a 1 year contract), and does provide experience that we are often complaining about that we haven't got.

Congrats on the 250th Brad. Regardless of what eventuates in 2013, this is a milestone that we all agree that you deserve.
