Trade Bait

Ok guys, I wanted to see who people thought would be good trade bait this year.

At the moment it seems to be 2 reactions going on

1.

Person 1 : Trade Petterd, Bate and Dunn

Person 2: No one will want them!!

and

2.

Person 1: trade trengove, Magner and Blease

Person 2: You idiot! why would we want to lose them! what about culture??

So I wanted to see what players people actually thought would be realistic to trade and who for. Who are the players who fit in between the above 2 options and are both wanted by other clubs, and will not hurt our culture by losing them?

Personally I think Blease (For an u17 pick) and Magner (Pick upgrade) would make good trade bait, both are valued MFC players that could be used by other teams and at the same time we can do take the hit of losing them.

For trade scenarios to work, I wanted to see which players people thought would be feasible. We need to be prepared to lose something to gain something in the trading game!

We have two picks in the top 5.

We already have 'something' which is why not many are playing into your trading scenarios.

If I was a Geelong fan who wanted to get Boak then I would be thinking about how my club can get some trades happening.

Right now, I realise my club has very few tradeable players who I don't consider required players and that my club doesn't need more top draft picks - they just need to get the ones they've got right.

I am aware of this, though I think its sometimes good to explore other options. Could be a great trade out there which could land Beams for example. Or maybe we could trade for Wellingham, or get Betts as a small forward without using our high valued picks.

Surely there are some players who fit in between the 'Cant Trade because of culture' and the 'Cant trade because of no value' lines.

I would put Tapscott in that area

Really we should have traded Bate last season when the Doggies wanted him. Now hes a free agent and

can just walk if he wants.

There was a reason we didnt and it involves have sufficient NQRs available to cull into a reasonably strong draft.

Bate has found his true market value.....He is free to go at year end.

You make a very good point here that Geelong will need to get the trade done with Port and they aren't in a great position. I see us trading in players, delisting the ones we don't want, and draft to cover what's left.

In terms of players of genuine value that MAY be up for trade they are very few.

Moloney: it'd gut me a little because he has been one of my favourites but the does seem to be carrying some baggage and isn't in the game.

Petterd: As you pointed out he probably doesn't offer much value but he is talented and has shown his ability to change and influence games in the past. Again I wouldn't like it but it may be the best for both parties.

Tapscott: Is another talented player, but not getting enough out of him. I reckon we'll keep him because he gets games despite not playing great, that tells me Neeld sees something he likes.

Stef Martin: Let's be clear I'm not advocating us trading, but he has huge market value because he had a good year last year and if he keeps improving his game with no 1 rucking duties for pretty much the rest of the year he could land us a good pick.

Spencer: Similar to Stef, he will be given every chance to show his ability for the rest of the year and if he gets better we know clubs need ruck options.

For me those are the only trade bait options we have that would be of value to other clubs. Names like Dunn, Bate, Joel MacDonald, and Davey will get us 3rd-4th round picks if and really that means nothing and mostly the first two will just get picks to get them to the clubs of choice. I reckon Joel Mack and Flash will be with us next year, I'm pretty sure Davey has one more year on his contract so unless he retires he'll have one last crack.

That's my two cents.

I believe someone on here said that Neeld (or someone within the FD) has indicated that there will likely be considerable turnover of players at seasons end.

Neeld seems like the sort of guy who knows what he wants and makes the necessary decisions to get the job done.

He won't want to trade players that fit his plans and that includes tough inside mids, even if they are sometimes considered depth players.

Having said that, everyone has their price and if the right deal was offered, we might just see a Tapscott for Caddy, or Jamar for Boak, or Silvia for Beams, or pick 4 for GWS 17yr/o deal get done.

It is widely agreed that you need to give something good to get something good. We may have to face giving up a well-liked player in order to receive a pick or player of value. Offering our trash, particularly 2 or 3 players of low value will not buy a star, as some seem to believe. Lets be realistic.

Put our duds on the table. Most likely nobody bites. We delist them. That is most likely what is going to happen. It is the usual scenario where everyone talks about trade week for months and all the permutations, but then not a hell of a lot happens.

Don't think Neeld is going to be too interested in trading guys who have already been in the system a few years and have shown a bit such as Tapscott and Blease for a pick in the lottery that leads to another skinny 18 year old that he has to wait years for, especially when we already hold a very strong hand pick wise in the draft.

Pick 3, 4 and 12 sound like trade bait to me

Stef Martin is the other one.

If all else fails trade bate and Dunn for beams and side bottom

Idiots...

If Geelong want boak soooo bad then I want Motlop and some sort of swapping of picks. Our stackpile of picks our are trade bait. Forget Dunn,Bate and others all you are going to get is a upgrade from pick in the high 50's to a pick in the low 50's. If a club wants a player and we don't want the player anymore then we look after the player and get any deal done.

Cool story bro

Stop hating and dont click on threads i start. Simple. Now run along.

That aside i think a tapscott for caddy would benefit both gc and mfc.

I also think morton has more value then people give him credit for. A few clangers and he is on mfcs most hated list. I think he would def be worth at least a late 2nd round pick.

wtf mate do ya reserch first before posting rubbish like this!. tapscott signed a deal long with trenner last year.

FFS!

Calm down chap. Contracted players are commonly traded, sometimes the team they leave end up paying some of the contract to play for the team they go to as part of the deal.

Juss sayin!!!

That's it.

And if you want to break it down further, it's a choice between a 3rd or 4th round pick last year and potentially as high as our 2nd round pick this year (in a much stronger draft).

What I love about trade threads is how people think the opposition clubs are idiots, that or they live in imagination land.

GCS would not give us Caddy for tappscot. to get Caddy we would need to give pick 4 or Jones. And even Jones may not get the deal done.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
