Cannot believe no one has Jamar. To me he was almost BOG. He was all over Stanley and McEvoy and gave our mids first use of the ball at every opportunity.

I see what you are saying, and this was definitely his best game of the year, but Stanley and McEvoy are rubbish.

No one has Moloney?! I know he wasn't our best, but was about the only player running the ball out of the middle for us I thought.

And for once his bombing came in handy dues to the conditions...

Also, special mention to Jamar seeing I left him out, absolute warrior for us

His effort was improved but he made some very poor errors. Kick to no one in the goal square in the first, the easy miss in the third, his ongoing attempts to attempt to beat 4 tackles instead of taking the first option.

You could say the same about most of our mids though in those conditions. Just seemed to me he was the only midfielder who actually burst away enough to have a look where he was kicking, everyone else simply caught the ball and snapped it blindly.

7 - The Supporters who came along. Not a lot of reason for Melbourne fans to rock up on a cold, wet and windy night when we're 0-4, but for those of you who did, it felt like there was a bigger crowd than 25 000 when we hit the front. Keep getting to the games.

6 - Jones

5 - Rivers

4 - T.Mcdonald, great job on Roo

3. Grimes

2. Magner

Sorry Jordie

Great effort from the boys, great to see Grimes and Davey hit some form. Let's keep it going boys :)

6: Jones, he is becoming an elite midfielder and last night he was superb.

5: T McDonald, in only his 6th game. He will have his ups and downs, but in a couple of years - wow!!!

4: Rivers, the tooooo much, toooo unfairly maligned. Seems to get to the right spot all the time.

3: Jordy McKenzie, you added a bit of extra spice to the game, I thought Goddard was going to lose "it" last night, and just about did!

2: Magner, tough bastard!!!

1: Grimes, but for his disposal !!!!!

Jamar, Mooloney and even Morton + to all

And Sylvia was better for the run.

ps: but we still lost and I'm still not satisfied.

6. Jones - BOG by a mile for the first half. Wasn't as prolific as the game wore on, but I believe his guts and his efforts set the precedent for the rest if the team initially. Has really been exceptional this year.

5. McKenzie - the smother on Goddard (3rd quarter?) set this in stone for me. Back to the Jordie we love - hard as a cat's head.

4. Jamar - hitouts galore and put them in useful spots. Starting to find some cohesion with our current batch of mids.

3. McDonald - would've made a few in the selection thread red-faced. Seemed to strike the perfect balance between manning his superstar opponent and attacking the ball. Very impressive game.

2. Rivers - reading of the play has always been his strength and was on show tonight. Has a knack of seeming to just appear in the right place for the contest every time.

1. Magner. 4 game veteran. Just love the brand of footy he plays. Still pinching myself that we got him/

Others whose game I loved but couldn't find room for in the votes:

Bartram - saved his best for his 100th. Unfashionable but can always be counted on for 100% effort. His goal itself was probably more arse than class, but the work he put in to win the footy and break way to score it certainly wasn't.

Morton - showed all his tools. Helped out in packs when it was necessary without compromising his outside game, and his tackling was the best it's ever been probably. In the last two weeks he's improved significantly. Turned the corner?

Grimes - just works so hard, and I reckon the lack of quality in his disposal is greatly overstated. His tackle on Montagna (?) that lead to the Watts goal gave goosebumps. Was very pleased to see all the boys including Watts run straight to him after that goal.

Bail - provided crucial run on a night that didn't suit running much. His form has been ordinary, but turned it around last night. Two goals is a good return.

Morton had a good game , Bartram and Bate battled hard all night , Grimes got a lot of touches and Moloney showed us a bit of last years form .

Our senior players were much better , though they need to do this every week .

If we had a bit more class in the side we would have won the game . Some terrific positive signs .

6 - Jones I used to think he wouldn't make it. I was wrong.

5 - Magner Very hard, never stops & has the sort of head that is just a little bit scary.

4 - Rivers What a great defensive game. Did everything well.

3 - Jordie Mc. How much fun was it watching BJ get more and more [censored] off?

2 - Tom Mac. Goes to show the value of working hard in the off- season and simply 'doing the job'. Nick Who?

1 - Bate. Just continues to look more and more like an AFL footballer. Can't wait for him to get more confident in his ability.

Like many other posters, I would have liked to acknowledge a lot more players who did well but that's life.

Bail was nearly in the votes but lost a few points with me for some poor tackling (but poor in a good way - he just held on too long and gave away free kicks. I'd rather that than having tackles not stick). It was great, also, to see Grimes work his way into the game as well as he did. Augurs well. I just hope his kicking improves.

6 - Jones. Massively underrated, even sometimes on here!

5 - McKenzie. Absolutely loved his work on Goddard. Especially when watching the replay, had the biggest grin on his face as BJ got more and more annoyed.

4 - Magner. Niggly, clearance machine, fearless. Hard to believe he was taken at pick 50+ in the rookie draft.

3 - McDonald. Did an excellent job shutting down Reiwoldt, even if Roo is a bit down of form.

2 - Rivers. Plays the role of backline general exceptionally well. Was especially needed in Frawley's absence.

1 - Jamar. Massive amount of hitouts, even if it was against a couple of spuds.

Massive apologies to Morton, Bartram and Moloney.

Why do I like what Neeld is doing? Would anyone have picked the bolded players above as winning votes at the end of last season? Jordie maybe, but the rest? He's starting to turn around some guys who were looking like they might wind up discarded. I'm really looking forward to what the team looks like at the end of the season (and after trade week).

who knows how much can be credited to Neeld (and the rest of the staff) but 24-year-old Magner was taken at pick 42 in the rookie draft, and he is on auto-select as one of our best performers this year, which is pretty crazy

Barlow did it a couple of years ago. Davey did it a while back too. Admittedly they were both early rookie picks, but still rookies who made an immediate impact. Robertson was another. I'm wondering if it's simply that people are paying more attention to the fact that they are rookies than they were a decade ago?
