Travis Johnstone joins Chelsea Heights Football Club

Chelsea Heights Football Club is extremely pleased to announce that former AFL star and No1 draft pick Travis Johnstone will become its Number 1 ticket-holder for 2012, and will represent the club this week against Highett in its first home game for the year.

Johnstone was the first selection in the 1997 AFL Draft and played 209 games, kicking 135 goals. In 2002 he finished equal fourth in Brownlow Medal voting, and in 2005 he won the the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal (Melbourne’s Best and Fairest Award), leading the AFL in total kicks. Johnstone produced a career-high 42 disposals in what would be his final game for the Demons in round 22 against Carlton, before migrating north to Brisbane Lions where he played 49 games.

The Johnstone name has a rich history in the local area and at the Chelsea Heights Football Club. Travis’s grandfather Norm was recruited from Chelsea to Fitzroy where he became a legend and was named in the club’s Team of the Century as an on-baller. His father, Jim, coached Chelsea Heights to the Division 3 Premiership in 1995, until 1997 when Travis was drafted, while his uncle, Grant, was Chelsea Heights’ President during the same period.

Chelsea Heights supporters and football enthusiasts in general should get down to Beazley Reserve this Saturday at 2pm to enjoy what should be a great day’s football and the continuation of a great family tradition in Demon colours.

Still the best player to pull on the jumper in the last 10 years. If only we had players of his class still on the list, we'd be in a far better place than we are now.

There's a chance he'll gather 80 touches in his 1st game - one of my absolute faves.

Played two magnificent final games that stick in my mind.....one against Carlton and the other against the Crows.

Amazing.

My fondest memory of Travis was when Matty Whelan polaxed James Hird and Trapper swooped on a loose ball then banged it from the Boundry 55m out Ponsford end. The roar from the crowd was spine tingling.

he'd get a game in our current team. Sad, but true

Not only that, he'd be our best player :(

I absolutely loved watching Trapper play footy.

I am seriously considering making the trek to watch him run around on Saturday. Might enjoy watching footy for the first time in a while!

It is true! Dees should have picked him up. I think he liked a beer too much. He's better than Macdonald and Mac's not bad.

He was certainly a great talent, but as has been the case so much at our beloved club, an underachieving and underdeveloped one.

Was it the coaches, the game plan -- personally I reckon once again lack of consistent and hard on field leadership.

He could have been so much, and still been.....but....alas......

The answer as to who is to blame for Travis Johnstone's failure to capitalise on his talent is Travis Johnstone.

Exactly.

Sure, everyone is ultimately responsible for their own actions, but one cannot help thinking if we had some hard uncompromising leaders who lead by example things may have turned out differently.

The Crows game was Jekyl and Hyde; I was convinced at stages in that game we would win the flag,

Good to hear that Trapper is still playing footy.

He was one of my faves from the last 15 years and would love to see him (and his beard) play.

Well done TJ.

The Best "Hot & Cold" Player i have seen....when Travis decided to flick the switch he was the Best Kick in the AFL.

If only he had had the application of R. Flower.

FFS. He played under Lyon, Stynes, Tingay, Neitz, McDonald. At Brisbane he played under Brown, Black and co. Do you think he needed a wet nurse during his 10 years?

An inate and inconsistent talent with an immature gameboy mentality. I doubt he would have been in a No 1 pick calibre in the 2010s

Despite not fulfilling the promise his talent made, he was still a better footballer than anyone else to pull on the Red n Blue jumper since the turn of the century. And while I loved him as a player, I think that says more about how poor we've been as a club. Miss TJ and more successful times.

Inate talent? Then the recruiting should be held accountable, not Travis?

Gee, he's playing a game at Chelsea and the same olds still can't let go. He's at least a # 1 capable ticket holder in 2010's!

Many more at Melbourne have disappointed more than Travis, some still to today and both on and off the field. I'll continue to enjoy some of the memories.

Good luck to you # 16.

Trav had more time ans space than the starship enterprise

He and Farmer were the greats that I loved to watch and watch and watch

Remember in 1998, I think it was his first game he kicked the winning goal against the Pies (Trav that is)

His game against the Crows in that 2002 final was as magnificent a performance as I have ever seen

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
