Can anyone come up a higher free kick differential for an AFL/VFL game then the 23 to 1 tally during the third quarter of the West Coast game? Actually can anyone come up with a WA game where we finished in front in the free kick tally ? The crowd seems to umpire those games especially against the poorly supported (read MFC) clubs .

Record or no record, the umpires paid what were generally as plain as day.

I actually thing the umpiring for the day was pretty accurate, wasn't their fault that our tackling was crap.

From 29 matches at Subiaco,

22-21 Round 21, 2007 vs Freo (lost by 59)

21-20, SF 2006 vs Freo (lost by 27)

21-11, R11 2004 vs Freo (won by 31)

29-20, R14 1995 vs Freo (won by 52)

32-24, R1 1991 vs WCE (lost by 79)

Also a couple of ties. We're up 4-3 at the WACA though if you're keen.

We gave away plenty but the general consensus from the MFC supporters at the game was that we weren't paid the ones we were due.

That was the great injustice and the reason for the massive gap. Not purely our poor tackling.

Some posters need to get their facts right about this topic.

The AFL is big on protecting the head and are happy to fiddle the rules to achieve that. Why then do they allow free kicks to be paid to players who deliberately duck and put their heads at risk? Surely this is encouraging dangerous behaviour.

Similarly though it happens less often, they seem to pay free kicks to players who throw their heads at opponents legs. If the player whose head is hit initiated the action, then there should be no free kick.

Anyone who watched the game shouldn't have a problem with the free kicks. The majority of them were fair. Although frustratingly they did slip into a couple of high tackles. I can't complain- and we all know how much I love to do that. Muppets

I think the situation highlighted the experience and the nous of the Eagles players who recognised the flow of the umpiring and played perfectly to them. Some clever ducking of the head into tackles and a couple of well executed dives didn't do them any harm. It was just one of those days for us and we were always going to be up against it but I thought the failure to award a free to Mitch Clark when he seemed to be interfered with in a marking duel set the scene for the first half. Didn't do much for our confidence.

Would love to blame the umps but they were not the reason for the weekend loss. But it will come together. I know the waiting is hard but we just have too

Ducking is a blight on the game .Great to see Selwood just got his head smashed for the second time in a game .Hope he drops dead.

For the third time on here . Geelong could not have won that game with that free count . About 20% were legit .Disgraceful .Duckers deserve all the pain they get and "play on" .

9 head high tackles. We are just stupid dumb people on a grassy field. Can't bring myself to call them footballers.

Watched a few games on the weekend. None play the kind of *%^&$(_) we play week in week out. other games are actually enjoyable contests.

You are witnessing the killing of a football club. The players, coaches and staff are all responsible.

I want my weekends back.

It's time the AFL looked at the interpretation of the law which says ducking is play on to also be applied to incidents where players go-low. I know there was a warning sent out to players who were sliding head first into opponents legs to gets frees, same needs to be done IMO. It's dangerous and it's often not the fault of the tackler.

If it's so obvious and the umps fall for it every time how come I never see Melbourne players trying to "manouver" themselves into a free kick situation?

Well, I for one would love to have a Selwood or two in our team.

Think you need to get your head out of your you know what..... Selwwod just got knocked out going for the ball - putting his head on the line to win the ball for his side. Thats one of the many reasons why Geelong have wone 3 flags out of the last 5.....

Pity we dont have many Melb players willing to do this atm......

There is a major difference between ducking and what Selwood at his team mates do. Hope our boys watched todays game.

If you looked closely, he copped that today & played on & played a great game. Oh, his side won too.

If you hadnt noticed, you cant play that way these days.

Would love our boys to play like him, Bartel, Kelly, Enright, Corey, etc...

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
