IMO this kid is going to be a rock at the heart of the Adelaide defense for the next 10 years.

Prendergast punted on Gysberts when we'd already taken two mids (Scully and Trengove) at 1 & 2.

A mistake in my opinion given our long term needs down back, and the obvious quality of Talia.

I was wondering about this one at the time (actually coudn't believe it), can't do anything about it now, so given our problems with mids just want Gys to get on the ground and show his stuff.

Hey Rangey ,We've got bigger fish to fry .If he has 3 first games like Gys I'll think about it .

I think it's way too early to say.

I was hot onto the Talia bandwagon at the time. But I didn't know much about the Gys...

I'll wait another 18 months.

At least you have gone early so you can look back and see whether you are right. Rather than waiting 6 or 7 years and then just picking the best players from the draft.

Daniel Talia has proven nothing other than he's good at getting injured, having average footskills, and that he'll be a flanker and not a true key position defender.

To those who say 'hindsight is a wonderful thing', I say ... so is foresight.

Especially by those who get paid the big bucks to make the big decisions.

Enough already with the 'failed drafting' threads. Just does my head in that people can jump up and down about drafting over the past few years. Give these kids 5 or 6 years, then see where they (we) are.

As I mentioned in another thread, go and look at Scott Thompson's first few years at Melbourne, had "mediocre" written all over it, and it took him well into his sixth season before we start to see consistently solid performances, and another season or two after that before he started to become "elite". And he's not Robinson Crusoe on the "it takes time" front.

Im a gysberts fan

Out of all of the "should have drafted him" scenario's its the gysberts one I have no issues with.

IMO where we got it wrong was back when we took the guys like Dunn, Bate, etc. Guys in this age group should be walk up starts in the 22 but they're not. Even Strauss/Blease are much more iffy than Gysberts IMO

Posted

People are missing the point (as usual!).

The thread is not having a crack at Gysberts. I hope he turns out to be a good player. But I think Talia will be a very good player in a position (CHB/FB) far more difficult to fill.

Again just IMO. No need to twist knickers over it.

Righto.

I dont have a problem with them overlooking a defender like Talia when we had Frawley, Garland, Rivers, Warnock & Grimes. Warnock looked the goods back then.

I still dont think we necessarily need more defenders

Stuff Talia. The big miss in the 2009 draft was Nat Fyfe. He is already a star.

I think someone fed us some dodgy figures too. The stats have Gysberts at 188cm and 83kg, and Fyfe at 186 and 73kg.

Love to know what they feed them in Freo.

Even though we've already filled those positions, but are desperate for quality midfielders............

And I thought we were short classy midfielders but we obviously need more key backs.Especially ones that are so far unproven.

Have we? Frawley lacks the height to take on Buddy, Kreuzer and Cloke types. Rivers gets monstered by them. Garland can't play full back.

Talia (196cm/95kg) is genuine KPD height and build and has the tools to go with it.

It will continue to be a problem area for us unless Sellar can come on in sensational fashion. Here's hoping.

Well done. You dont have it.

Our problem is the midfield. Gysberts has midfield potential.

If you wanted to show foresight, how did we miss on Fyfe. He is a midfield gem at pick 20.

Yawn. Enough with the failed draft pick threads. It's getting tiresome.

Aren't we under siege from the football community enough already? We have to keep eating our own?

And yes, by way of questioning why we didn't pick up Talia you are questioning the viability of Gysberts. Give him some time!

Got no issue with the midfield being an issue. It's why Scully and Trengove were snapped up. But it's too simple to say it's our only problem area moving forward.

A critical decision came at pick 11 and instead of going with the U/18AACHB no-brainer who most pundits had predicted us to be pick, Prenders got cute and went for a left-field pick.

It matters not whether or not I have foresight (although if you care to troll my posts you'll find I was pro-Talia). It only matters if the recruiter being paid salary does.

And he's no longer around ... is he.

Yeah and where is $ully right now? Turns out Gysberts wasn't excess.

+1

These threads/discussions serve no purpose other than to give people the opportunity to put the boot into our recruiters.

He wouldn't even be getting a game at Adelaide had Davis not gone to GWS & Bock to Gold Coast.

Way to early.

Get over it. We pick skinny kids - so what? At least Misson knows how to develop them. We'll see some great improvement from our so-called "blunders." Stop bignoting yourself with the "I picked it but everyone else is stupid" rubbish. It's seriously doing my head in more than anything else on this website.

Plus, I can't believe you didn't put in the "Too Early To Tell" option. Obviously you don't know how to run a poll right. Even political polls have "This, That and the Other" options.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
