It's not as easy as i thought. We seem to be developing some depth. I'm sure fitness and the attitude shown on the training track will be the final determinants.

HB: Grimes Sellar Garland

C: Trengove Moloney Watts

F: Davey Martin Howe

F: Petterd Clark Green

Aint it great "its not so easy"

thats why I'll leave it to the coach.

I now (through demonlanders comments and reports) know more about our players than ever but still dont know enough(anything) about our structures and strategies and even less about the opposition.

I just hope that the coaching etc team do and have a variety of plans.

GO DEES

I just hope we have a plan of attack, this full defensive plan in boring to watch. Also last time we played the Lions they doubled our possesion count.

I really like the fact that trying to guess the Round 1 team is harder than it has been for a while. Here goes.

Backs: Bartram, Frawley, Rivers, Garland, T MacDonald, Blease,

Mids: Trengove, Jones, Gysbert, Moloney, Bate, Bail

Ruck: Jamar,

Forwards: Green, Watts, Howe, Clark, Petterd,

Bench: Davey, Magner, Martin

Sub: Dunn

In my perfect team:

LJ as a forward - Green to the bench

Sylvia into the midfield - Magner to Casey

Strauss as a backman - Tom MacDonald to Casey

Tapscott into the midfield - Bate to Casey

Davey as sub - Dunn to Casey

It's going to be really interesting to see which way Neeldy goes this weekend. For what it's worth..

B: Bartram, Sellar, Rivers

HB: Grimes, Frawley, Garland

C: Howe, Moloney, Magner

HF: Pettard, Martin, Dunn

F: Green, Clark, Davey

R: Jamar, Trengove, Jones

B: Watts, Bate, Blease

Sub: McKenzie

I've tried to keep my personal views free from this selection and tap into Neeldy's brain.

1. Neeld seems to demand Sellar in his structure, so even though I'd be reluctant to play him against Brisbane, it seems he'll take his spot.

2. He will have told Magner whether or not he's playing and he'll make a point of it by naming him on the ground rather than on an extended bench.

3. Watts he'll name on the extended bench because he would make a similar statement the other way.

4. I really don't know where Jordie McKenzie is at... he's had quite an underdone pre-season but he didn't play last week which confuses me. I've got him as my sub, but this could easily be Bennell's possie.

All I can say is bring on Saturday because I'm chomping at the bit to see the boys get stuck in!!

GO DEES!!!

I generally like your work and while there is no logical reason why McDonald and Blease can't play back and Green play forward, there is very little chance that this is going to happen this week under Neeld. McDonald and Blease have trained with the forwards all pre-season and Green is playing higher, up in the midfield.

If it's a 'policy' I am against it.

If it happens by osmosis while we are developing five stars of the competition then hooray, but who cares, because we would have 5 stars of the competition.

We can continue the argument if you want to - depth gets you a solid, middling team.

I don't care for those teams, I want a flag.

I don't get the love for Couch and Magner in this thread. I've seen them be good grunt players but neither have yet to do anything at all classy. Putting both in would be silly IMO.

I disagreed and I suspect the coach does too. Couch has just been elevated and Magner is a given. They're just about our best 'inside' mids already. They lack class, but are very effective in clearances, they're both hungry, they both give grunt and they're both tackling machines. Neeld's first thoughts are to get the ball moving our way from stoppages and they'll do that.

Both will be named and debut on Saturday. I look forward to seeing what they contribute.

Maybe they'll tweak that a little.

Though I've always advocated Martin @ CHF, perhaps Martin & certainly Jamar would be more comfortable as big men around the square (& Sellar could come forward for a few minutes) leaving Clark CHF much of the day, where we've been weak forever.

I doubt they'll do it this week, but Watts with his speed, skill & excellent delivery to the forwards, could be one of our best wingmen.

Happy with that side - it's the obvious best available 25 at this point. Grimes is presumably on the extended bench pending fitness. Don't think Bennell or Tynan will be in the side - Watts, Magner, Bail, Couch and Nicholson will fight for the last three spots, with my preference being in that order.

Thanks for that.

I think with Couch's elevation he will be in the final four with Magner, Watts, and Grimes.

I think Couch might be the sub at this stage.

This is not the team, the Footy Show failed to mention they are guessing, the only two teams named were Richmond and Carlton

The squads and benches on the FS are always educated guesses. I'm almost certain that this bench line-up hasn't come from the club.

Really? I hadn't realised that "educated" and "footy show" could be used in the same sentence.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
