Melbourne and the Football World mourn Jimmy Stynes

Edit: DEMONLAND NOTE: This thread was opened on Monday night when the news was revealed that Jimmy Stynes was gravely ill. He passed away on the morning of Tuesday 20 March, 2012, just six days after attending the Melbourne Football Club's Commencement Dinner and being presented with his club blazer.

Jimmy Stynes was a great Melbourne man as a player and afterwards was the inspiration behind the club's survival.

We send our sincerest condolences to his wife Sam and to his young family, parents and siblings.

Here's the OP:-

It was just mentioned that they have been hearing that Jimmy is "gravely ill" and the question was put to Demetriou - his response was that he couldn't really comment other than to say that their thoughts are with him. Doesn't sound good :-(

Mile Sheehan just asked Andrew Demetriou about reports Jimmy is gravely ill. Demetriou gave little away other than saying thoughts were with Jimmy and family.

But it didn't sound good.

Keep up that fight Jimmy!

Really sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately looks as though Jims condition has deteriorated badly.

Was just watching 'on the couch' where Demetriou said the latest news is that stynes is 'gravely ill' and said something along the lines of our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Unfortunately doesn't sound good and I really hope that this is not the case. Has anyone heard any news??

There's never any 'good' in hearing things like this. But here's my good.

I've heard gravely ill and Jim Stynes together 100 times and we still stand here today idolising the man who after so many tumours, still has a beating heart.

Jim Stynes will be forever change anyone who has met, listened too or even just heard about the man in a way no politician, actor or billionaire ever well. He gives hope to those who should have given up, he gives life to those who should have run their course and courage to those who never knew they had it.

The story of Jim Stynes will live on, and when the fateful day where whatever it is he fights finally beats him, not just us as Demons but the community and society as a whole will be indebted to a man like no other.

So many people around the world dream that when they grow up they will change the world in some way- Jim has completed that and that is a feat no illness, no cancer will ever take away from Jim Stynes and the people he has touched.

Until I hear the words he has been lost, you know he won't give up fighting and it's a life lesson that so many of us can applaud.

Jimmy's health has deteriorated over the last month and I think unfortunately we should now be prepared for the worst. This will test the mantle of the Club. But that is nowhere near what his young family and extended family will be going through. My thoughts and prayers are with them and Jimmy. You have given so much of yourself.

The news is still a shock (even after all the "bad" news we've heard before).... The great man has been an inspiration to so many people... Tears get fought back just at the thought of the battle ending... Although the fight still continues... Much love to family and friends of the Irish legend...

On a side note, I'm going in tomorrow morning for another tattoo session on a grey/shaded sleeve... Only colour is a red 'n blue symbol on my inner forearm... I'd like to add in a permanent tribute to the great man and just wondered if anyone had any suggestions of a symbolic piece of art to forever honor the spirit of Big Jim... I'm not in anyway trying to hijack this thread, just would love to add a touch of the great man to this piece of work...

Love ya big guy :)

One thing we know about Jim.

Wow - that is moving.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
