I have no problem with the leave so long as Jurrah is not being paid. He is welcome back any time, and to being paid when he rejoins the list.

If, however, he is being paid for his "leave", then it is just plain [censored]. The MFC is not a welfare agency.

So you don't get personal leave and annual leave payments from your work place?!

That is just rude what you dont get paid leave how about you go away and think about what you just said because that was very rude if your family had a problem and your work said go away but were not paying you would be happy were not in the 1920s grow up

OK champ, where do you draw the line? 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 6 months...duration of contract.

The AFL is a work place, 4 weeks 'leave'. What workplace gives you unlimited 'time off' (love to get a job there)?

binman: I said NOT paid leave; as for most of the leave you mention, it is unpaid.

He can have as much unpaid leave as he wants. Just staying on our list is reward enough.

hmm

The guy has previously broken fingers, dislocated his shoulder plus two rounds of surgery for a broken wrist. That's testament to his dedication to the club. The least we can do is offer some paid carers leave for personal reasons that have arisen. I do think that is fair and reasonable.

He has been with the club for a number of years now and carers leave in many cases is accruable.

OHHH my god your back and still going what you just said is just plain rude and your not thinking clear. He is on leave for family reasons and i get leave if my family needs help. And what you work 5000KM from your family do you? Your being very rude he never said im going for 6 months so stop with the workplace agreement act you need to say sorry for being rude to a player who needs to support his family. Say sorry

You play it by ear. I doubt the club expects Liam to be gone for 4 weeks. It's clear the club believes this to be temporary and is treating it as such. And I think you'd be surprised how many employers would grant you paid leave if you applied in an appropriate fashion and said "I've got xxx extenuating circumstance, but I'll be back in a week and I won't ask for this again". Good employers will go out of their way to help good employees; it's a two-way relationship.

,

As I said, instantly drawing the hard line is a great way to go about alienating your current and future players.

Have you lost the plot?

He is heading home to sort out family issues, he is not doing a runner,

its fair enough that he is heading back while he is injured.

did you feel the same last year when Grimes went on a holiday with his brother during the season?

yeah thought so!

Little bit of Wonna to this.

I think Wonna's situation was a little bit different. He was in a state of grief, whereas Jurrah could just be going to help out his family in what looks like a community that's in a bad state. I hope it's nothing more than that, for his and his community's sake, and that we see him playing at full strength again soon.

Worst Post ever in the History of Demonland....

You say that like his motivation would purely be the money whereas the opposite would probably be true. There are plenty of workplaces which look after their valued employees, perhaps you just never had this experience. Might say more about you than Liam or the MFC?

Liam Jurrah is just 23 years old but I understand that he is regarded as a bit of a leader in his community. That he has to deal with difficult situations in that community might well be a burden for one so young but from what I have seen and read about him, I think he will be able to handle it and come out a more mature and rounded person. His wrist won't be right until early April and I'm sure he'll look after himself physically whilst he's with his people at home so there's no need for the angst here.

This is one of the worst posts I have seen on this website.

For a start Liam is injured (read on workcare for a wrist he broke playing for Melbourne) and should be on full payment of his contract anyway. If the club is happy for Liam to go home during this time when he is unavailable to play (read work) then I have no issue at all, I just hope Liam is able to sort his issues out quickly and return to the club, because I really enjoy watching him weave his magic.

All the best Liam.

Nor is there a place for such outrageous comments from Mono - absolutely disgusting!

Hmm, Sean Charles ...

I was thinking along those lines, but more so Wona.

I must say I am pretty pessimistic about seeing him out on the G in a MFC jumper again.

i need to stick up for mono, he pretty much said what a lot of the members were thinking. Little boy johnnys savings for a membership could be going towards someone going home for a while. If i was little boy johnny, i would prefer my membership cash to be going towards the guys on field.

I usually like your posts so won't be as hard on you as some others here might be but I think you need to rethink this. We are all obviously disappointed and hearts will be in mouths until he is back at the club but to paint this as "welfare" is just plain wrong and has some pretty bad implications.

I cant believe anyone would compare the career of an AFL footballer to a 'normal' 9-5, 5 days a week job.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, Grimes went to Queensland late last year while injured, should he have not been paid then too?

I have a good friend who ran into Liam late last week here in Alice. He said that Liam was back in Central Australia during what is a difficult time for the Yuendumu community and was looking forward to returning to Melbourne when appropriate. He also mentioned that apart from his wrist he was feeling fantastic.

The suggestion that there is some parallel between this situation and Wonna's is way off the mark. Relax, from what I know and have heard of Liam he is an exceptional young man trying to fulfill his responsibilities in two very different worlds.

Mono, you need to get up from under that rock you're living under and do some learning.

Ignorant, ignorant comment.

Little Johnny's savings?

Jeez. You and Mono better be world advocates of 'save the tax payers' if you're kicking up a fuss over this.

Do some learning brother.

Gain some insight into indigenous affairs and you might have a slightly different view...

'hearts will be in mouths until he is back at the club'

now why is that?

Because as Melbourne supporters we all want him back and playing but have been conditioned to fear the worst. Call it MFCSS or whatever epithet you may wish.

Posted

The issues which Liam is dealing with are family related and are his personal business so I won't elaborate here or anywhere else. However, as he was still recovering from his wrist surgery and was a few weeks away from playing again, the club has been terrific in granting Liam some personal leave to sort some matters out back home. I expect him to return shortly eager to complete his rehab and be ready to do his bit for the team. The club should be congratulated for the understanding and support they have shown Liam.

Thanks for the perspective RudeBoy.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I was of the belief that Liam is (through birth???) regarded as an elder of his community. This to me would suggest that he has certain responsibilities to his community, that would sometimes need to come before himself and his other responsibilities, and I would assume if correct that the club would have been fully aware of the potential of this sort of situation occurring at some time.

I won't even bother commenting on the ignorance of some, but put my voice to those who reasonably point out that he is recovering from an injury caused at work, and just like Jack Grimes (I remember no noses out of joint about this one) should be allowed a bit of time if required. The other thing to remember in this is that JG was not going to North Queensland to deal with massive upheaval in his remote community, he was going to a tropical island for R&R. So I ask, who is taking the [censored] more, Liam or Captain Jack?? Maybe some of you out there might like to take a moment, have a think and reassess a little. If this is still going on in a month or two, then perhaps we can take another look at this issue, but for now, best of luck Liam, and please come back soon champ.

Note: I harbour no ill will towards Jack Grimes for his time in FNQ, am just trying to make a point.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
