Melbourne one of three clubs chasing Irishman Tommy Walsh

Well, the Dees are looking to add to their Irish contingent.

A likely looking forward yet to make his AFL debut but he's out of contract and the Saints don't have as much to spend as we do.

Interesting, is only a rookie. Hasnt played any AFL games but i cant see it as a bad move. Pretty highly regarded Gaelic player come AFL rookie. is large 195cm 97kg

I like it.

I assume he would be on the minimum wage. We should be able to offer him more money than the saints can without breaking the bank.

Wonder what they would expect for him...they are only interested in draft picks given their cap position.

I was really jealous when the saints initially landed this guy for nothing. If we could get him now with the development commenced it would be great.

And has a nice side story too, another Irish big guy to our club. We have had the luck of the Irish in our previous recruits from that part of the world!

Sad to say, we haven't had a great deal of luck with the Irish of late.

We struck gold with both Sean Wight and Jimmy Stynes but since then it hasn't exactly proved to be a recruiting gold mine for the club. Brian Stynes only got one game. Anthony Tohill none that I'm aware of and later Nick Walsh never came close to getting an AFL game and his claim to fame was that he KO'd Chris Judd in a school match.

If the Saints want to offload him there would have to be a reason and, in view of the fact he hasn't played a single AFL game, money and salary cap reasons surely aren't the answer.

One would hope that David Misson would have some solid information about him.

They are if he wants more money and it won't fit in their cap.

Misson has probably put a lot of work into this kid, knows his athletic potential and that he is ready to explode.

I'd offer our 2nd round pick for him.

Steady on, I'd offer a second round pick for a bloke who can get a game...this bloke is like the Kyle Cheny deal of last year. All we have to do is promise the right amount of Money, say $150K plus incentives and that should see it done...although I'm still not convinced this is the right move, after missing out on O'Meara and Crouch it appears that we are just desperate to Trade for anything. We really need to start moving better in Trade Week and start proposistioning players well in advance.

Posted

How do you know we haven't 'propositioned' in advance anyway. Apparantly we have been active in commencing talks with players/managers that we like and we think are feasible, according to Harrington. Some things advance, some don't.

Why not have a go at walsh, as someone earlier said misson would have a pretty good understading of where he is at...

I know nothing of Walsh himself, but StKilda is ripe for picking off young players. It has probably been the worst environment of any club in terms of development of a player like this. I wouldnt pay much, but I can see that it might work.

Members of this message board maybe. I highly doubt the club want to trade for the sake of trade.

here is my brain fade....

why are we so adept at bagging out our recruiting team (and others for that matter)?

Yes we wanted a 17 yo but as they say not at any price.

What inside information do you have about our plans and thus the supposed failure to move better and propositioning players in advance?

Probably the same information I have nil, unless we count the checkout girl in Belgrave mentioned elsewhere.

Give them a break. We are not a team expected to vie for the flag so we cant offer that to potentials as well.

We haven't seen any sign of desperation from them yet.

Sorry you are the one who gets the serve PP but I do think we need to relax a bit and not be quick to bag Harrington and others.

I agree.

Saw him in the hybrid game and thought "He is a certainty to play AFL if he wants to."

Hope we get him.

For those suggestng we dont ustilise a 2nd round pick , why not ? Were probably going to have a few of them as result of a few trades, so what is it, is there a new game in town the one with the most picks at weeks end wins ??

Picks are just currency. Its 'money' ...you spend money. Its not as though wed spend ALL our money here, jut some.

The FD probably has in mind how mnay actual selections it might ( or need ) to make come the actual draft as to the rest its al lthere to be spent on the best deals able to be got..And that means real deals , and means deals WE can get.

This strikes me as a curious and intriguing target. Might be very opportune. With another preseason he might be ready to go, unlike a swathe of 17 and 18 year olds.

Go Dees

Maric for pick 40 (if we're lucky enough, perhaps maric + 54 as suggested in another thread)

Pick 40 for Walsh?

Saints were harping on about walsh being the quality of a 1st round selection when the got him.

http://www.theroar.com.au/2009/10/20/saints-sign-gaelic-football-star/

Read more about him here talking about his move to Australia. He also suggests that he may want to go back home at some stage...

Would really be interested in Walsh. Has a bit of an unknown factor and could be anything given the opportunity.

Posted

I saw a bit of Walsh play this season down at Sandringham, having worked for the Zebras for a few games.

He is massive physical presense, quiet, but intimidating. Didn't lose many one on one contests, and doesnt take a backward step.

Would be an intersting trade for us.

Sounds like exactly what we need up forward. Im not sure of our chances to snag him though.

Just for morale, we need to snag a big strong aggressive forward, especially an Irish one at that. Make the deal MFC.

Our commitment to the Mini Draft may have stopped us from getting to deep early with talks to people.

I've got a mate who's a fanatical St Kilda supporter. He was rapt when Lyon walked out because "he didn't give a potential gun like that Walsh kid a go" He reckons Walsh is a beauty

Walsh is just the sort of player we should put through our new development programs

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
