Reported widely to have a nice 'get out ' clause. Which it seems worked a treat...lol

This guy is mercenary.. to the max.; blindsided everyone ....except Freo of course .

Why do I have a funny feeling one GL got wind of it. Good smokescreen.

Blindsided is right --- fair dinkum, you couldn't make this stuff up if you tried! One coach, being chased by MFC but not interested, presides over a final in which his side loses, and the coach admits being unprepared for the game (did he tank? :-). This coach then picks the Freo coach's pocket, gets Mark Harvey sacked and has himself appointed within hours, for what I think is a record wage. To top it all off, he does this all himself, behind his own management's back, who crack it and dump him. All that is needed now is a scandal involving a couple of Freo players, some tensions during pre-season training and a few early-season losses for the Dockers, and it becomes a full-blown opera ... :-)

None of this makes sense!?

Ross makes a deal with Freo while his fellow coach in Mark Harvey is siting at home planning for next year. All the while Ross Lyons management has no idea what is going on?

Something is not right.

Well said, basically sums it up really.

I would guess so. He is supposed to give three months notice to terminate. Obviously he will forfeit all monies owed, but after that, I don't know.

Speaking from experience he loses holiday pay, sick pay, and he can't attend the christmas BBQ :P

On a separate not, surely "smokescreen" is the word of the week, right?

This has thrown 2 football clubs into disaray. If Mark Harvey had the support of the playing group, this will be a hard sell to them. The Saints, well they thought they had a tough pre-season last year!!

As for us, I hope the staunch confidence GL had going on on TFS means we already have our ducks lined up.... Very strongly worded reassurances that no-one we have approached has said no. A lot of space between the lines there...

Its only supposed that we went after Lyon. everyone left right and center seemed to think. Yet there wasnt any evidence to say we did. There might have been a suggestion by someon ewe look intoit but nothing official from the club seems to have eminated.

MFC ws probably happy for everyone to think this was so. Lyon was probably happy to let it seem that way too. All worked to his advantage.

Certainly an incredibly busy time. Apparently theres finals on...have you heard ..lol

Shame on Ross Lyon,

Shame on media for not knowing anything,

IMO we have the worst news breakers in the world.

If Scully didn't sign a contract one year before, they wouldn't have found out about that story either.

Can someone here with a Twitter account tweet that Fev is rumoured to be playing coach at StK next year or some rubbish like that. I want to see if we can start the craziest rumour ever and have someone consider it.

Is everyone forgetting that the bad guys that at the core of this whole fiasco is Fremantle Football Club. They have blood on their hands.

Mark Harvey has multiple knives in his back. Poor bloke, can't imagine how he is feeling.

I know the MFC haven't been effected directly, but this whole situation stinks.

Freo Vs StKilda will have some heat next season!

It had a bit of heat this season already if I remember correctly. Pretty sure it was a Fri game towards the end of the season. Please don't let the AFL schedule them together only once and at Freo.

Did you see their game a month or two back? There was already a fair amount of tension between the sides. Who knows how out of hand it could get next year.

Agreed.

Fremantle can expect a whole lot of memberships handed in! A lot of Freo supporters are ropeable at the way this was executed...

The way I see it, it is a very gutsy move by Fremantle as it definitely is quite a coup...But was executed poorly...

Dockers have probably played their best under Harvey and the injuries he has had to deal with all year really did hurt their chances going into the last patch of the year..

In any case, I think it is a massive statement of intent from Fremantle to get one of the best coaches going around...But perhaps they have now given the media a huge reason to focus on them for 2012..

It's amazing how much the landscape of the AFL has changed within two years. As soon as Gary Ablett was rumoured to be going to GC money became EVERYTHING. Ablett went and made his millions, Thompson left the cats for cushy migh paid assistant role, $cully, Ward and Co. got lured to GWS for way over their current worth, and now Ross Lyon has not only gone behind the backs of the Saints but his management group to take a very nice and extremely well paid gig at Freo.

Reading all that there is one league that reminds me of that, the English Premier League. As much as I love to watch EPL it sickens me that our great game has fallen this way.

EDIT: thought I'd add the fact that the players have rejected the latest deal from the AFL and are threatening industrial action to add more lining to their pockets.

Have we actually interviewed anyone?? After a week like this I havent got a clue whats going on?....Maybe its gonna be Gary himself!!

It wouldn't have mattered if we had in R.Lyon's case.

Grant Thomas is saying that the St. Kilda board bungled the negotiations with Lyon and, as a result, lost him but my mail is that Lyon has wanted out for some time. It must have been a frustration coaching at a club that, it is said, stuffed up on Ben Cousins and then Luke Ball, went through the embarrassment of Andrew Lovett, the continued fall out from the Montagna/Milne saga, dikileaks and the final straw of player misconduct on the pre season trip to New Zealand. For a professional coach to get his side to three grand finals and genuine contention to win two premierships was an outstanding feat. To make it all the way to the finals this year with a team so lacking in depth was also a fantastic achievement. He will definitely shake things up over in the west although the fact that he has achieved at St. Kilda does not necessarily translate into success with the Dockers. Things are evolving so quickly in the game that I wonder if he will be able to adapt his coaching techniques to a new environment and a new era. It just goes to show how tough the football environment has become.

Just thought I'd correct your typo here WJ. I believe you missed the word "no" in between "of" and "integrity".

No typo there Kent80. I was quoting Mark Robinson on AFL360 from Wednesday evening.

Sad to say, concepts such as integrity, loyalty and honesty which were once so important when our game was a sport have been swept under the carpet by some of the shonks who run the game now that it's become so commercialised. I'm not suggesting that the game was in a totally pristine state when I first became a fan but the old time heroes had such a wholesomeness about them and you don't see those qualities as much these days. I'm not blaming the people involved because the sport's become a business. Just being nostalgic.

Should we even have contracts in the AFL anymore? They are worthless.

I'm sure I heard/read somewhere that the Saints had recently recruited someone from the Hawks, without the knowledge of Lyon, and gave him a role with more authority than Lyon.

It was Chris Pelchen.Article Here

The press conference today this is what we will get

Journo" Ross why leave a top 8 club to come over to Fremantle?"

RL" The board wanted to take the club in a different direction, we had a differing opinion on where the list is at and I see Fremantle has a real top 4 contender next year."

Journo" Freo bit tuff on Harvey"

Freo " Mark has been great for this club, but when someone like Ross puts his hand up to coach our club we have to jump at the opportunity. We wish Mark all the best and thank him for his efforts."

In real speak Ross thinks the Saints run is over and jumping of the sinking ship with a pile of gold. Freo we never liked Mark they thought he would have been gone last year but he got them to the finals god knows how so they had to keep him.

Hear, hear.

I've never really rated Harvey as a coach but wow, this is low by Freo FC.

The fact that this has been in the planning for quite some time to me points to a board that cannot be trusted.

Will be interesting to see how big the fall-out actually becomes. I bet Harvey would like a scalp or two before moving on from this.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
