Lucas Cook

Position: Tall Forward

History: Lucas Cook is a 194cm and 82kg AFL- AIS Graduate, who is an extremely agile key forward prospect with a strong lead and the ability to take contested pack marks. He additionally is a good reader of the ball when it is in the air, has a strong overhead mark and is also very good when the ball on the ground.

In Vic Countrys first game in the Under 18 Championships Cook kicked 5 goals (including 3 in three minutes) and also took 5 contested marks and collected 20 disposals. In early July, Cook was a part of Vic Countrys first national Under 18 championship win in seven years and impressed AFL recruiters so much he was named in the Under 18 All-Australian Team.

In 2008 and 2009 Cook played for the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup and played in 20 matches and kicked a total of 19 goals.

Cook is currently into his third season with North Ballarat and after 7 matches has scored 18.5 (an average of 3 goals per game) from 29 marks.

I'm trying to place these kids (based on not having seen them except for highlights packages).

Taylor seems like a Warnock type defender. Speed, power, agility and looks to be able to run with the footy. Players like that need pace, but usually need time to develop.

McDonald reads to me like Leigh Brown. Strong, hard working, lion hearted tall utility. Wouldn't surprise me if he's being looked at as a mobile second ruckman who can do a job for you anywhere.

Howe is a medium/tall forward, but I guess it's his running ability and class that has got him drafted as much as his obvious high marking. It's hard to find what he has.

Cook looks to be that tall forward who can compete for the ball when it slows down. Good endurance, good mark but also able to take full advantage of his good work through kicking.

Bear in mind that this is based on no information so I'm just theorising, more than anything else. Very interesting draft.

I agree on McDonald being a Leigh Brown type. Looks to be a player who's place in the team and the modern game will add to his value. As an individual nothing flashy, but as part of a team an asset. Who knows I could be massively under selling him as there isn't hype around him. He could be the next Jarrod Roughead for all I know.

Davis I think we've drafted here on attributes more than any particular talent (again I know nothing just a gut feel). I think what we've gone for is a competitor with that speed you need to play full back. With a strong body and a good tough country mindset. Would be hard for him to be as good but I think we've looked at the basic ingredients of Frawley and thought we can mold something out of this kid. You can't teach speed in solidly built defenders though so I'm pretty happy with this selection.

With Howe I worry our recruiters fell in love with a highlights package. But there seems to be good endurance, sound skills and all round ability. I think for a 20 year old playing state league to go at pick 33 he's obviously interviewed well. I'd like to find out why he bummed around in Dodges ferry and didn't aim even higher than TSL. Russel Robertson, Jack Riewoldt, a white Liam Jurrah - I'd settle for him bringing any of that to the table. I'm excited to see if he can produce at VFL (or AFL) level early next season.

Cook I like. Should be physically capable in a few years time and he fits our game plan with suitable skills. Looks a cut above the Brad Miller mark and have no idea what to do with it and ruin an attack. Can play CHF with his endurance or closer to goal as he grows and has CHB potential as well. Not sure who he resembles. I'd be happy to throw him a few cheap NAB cup games, see what tricks he's got. After that I'm expecting a quiet year.

Maybe its overkill and poor drafting. But I'm really excited about getting 4 tall country boys (not sure about Howe but it's Tassie) into the team. If Howe has the typical big personality that comes with high flyers he should spice things up. Cook appears a diligent young man from afar. McDonald typical no frills worker, and Davis I hope he's brought the same attitude as well as hair style from Kerang as Jordie McKenzie.

Howe reminds me of Danny Hughes and I rated Hughes just couldn't get his body right. Is Jack Watts the next Garry Lyon he may be the next step ladder for many marks of the year.

I like our picks. With Gysberts playing minimal football, Strauss, Blease, Tapscott as well as Viney in the future the club can't have gone in any other direction.

On potential it is a really good mix, even accounting for the current stocks. Cook being named as AA CHF in front of other players rated higher, may just be a great decision.

Obviously some time will tell. A couple I hope to see quite early on and if the potential is realised we will be much the better.
