When I was born my father, a mad Collingwood supporter, brought me up in black and white. In 1985 when I started to really understand the game, I found my passion with a Red and Blue vision. Yeats, Healy, Flower and Grinter. 85 was the year that opened my eyes, I think we finished last. It was the passion of the club in the school yard in 1987, when we flogged NTH in the finals after a bad start to the season that I earnt my colours!

After many years of sorrow, bring on 2000, like the saints today I think we were never gunna win.

I sit here now, my father and my best mate both at the game today. True hard Pies supporters, that will never ever let me hear the end of it, I ponder what may be over the next 2 - 3 years.

We will have the opportunity to play in at least 3 Grand Final's this decade. Whether we can take the next step, I'm not so sure yet. But I truly think that we'll be one of the top 4 teams for a good 3-5 years, just like the Saints, Cats, Pies and Doggies have been.

It's very hard to have any kind of come back against Pies supporters after they won the flag, but one avenue of attack I found after the win was accusing the large Pies bandwagon of fairweather fans who no doubt are also supporters of both Man Utd and the LA Lakers.

It is very easy to jump on board a huge supported team like the Pies, we all know most of their fans have no idea about footy, but just love the chance to be part of a movement. When the Demons win a flag in the not too distant future, our win will feel much more deserved.

It's unbelievable. Hawthorn has a lot of bandwagon fans in the Eastern suburbs, but Collingwood, boy do they have a lot of 15-22 year old females suddenly appearing to be Pies fans.

Whilst I have a lifelong dislike of Collingwood - a natural state of mind, for any Demon supporter - I think respect is due.

They are where we want to be.

We want to see our 22, running around the MCG, holding the cup high.

Like them, we have had a few false dawns, over the last 46 years.

But,one must pay respect to what has been achieved by them, both on and off field in recent years.

My hope is that in the next couple of years, we will be able to achieve the same stunning results - on our own terms, in our own way!

Now all we've gotta do is keep developing our list, find a back up ruck, come up with a premiership winning game plan, keep our list healthy, make the top 4, make a grand final then win a grand final. Too easy

The biggest difference with Collingwood this year is that they have brought their "A" mental game against allcommers this year. On paper they don't appear too remarkable. Their game plan is old fashioned and predictable. They don't have any forward of note except Didak. Nine of their premiership players have played 60 or less games. A lot of their younger players seem to be developing much faster than ours. 90% of the game is played upstairs which they have done this year and thats an area Melbourne still fails badly and all the prime draft picks in the world wont help. Melbourne matched outstandingly well against them this year when switched on. To bad we still cherry pick when we want to be on. 8/22 for us this season is less than par. Should have been minimum 11/11 with the talent and depht at the club. If we didn't tank last year we would have likely won the same. Thats my big jealousy gripe.

We need major improvement to A) get into the finals B) Actually matter when when get there (Remember Freo.Haw.Carl all played finals this year but were never a chance) C) Hang with the big boys.

As I said before if we didn't tank we could have easily have won eight games last season. Theres not a huge difference between bottom and finals these days. Look at Freo.

And two outstanding games against Collingwood and more than several inept performances against teams we could have beaten proves to me that the attitude is no where near right. Perhaps all this tanking business has been bad for the teams attitude? Switching on and off for strategic reasons may have reinforced bad habits. This team is still not maximising opportunities. I fear we will go the way of Carlton.

Every grand final in my 35 years (okay not the early one's), with the obvious exceptions being 1988 and 2000, I always get stuck watching the presentations. A sad feeling always follows as I think, 'when is our time for this'?. It is a weird fascination but I enjoy watching the players get the rewards due them.

I have a lot of faith in the current group, from the board down that our time will come from this current group.

But there is a fair journey to travel yet.

I think anyone around here that knows me by now knows I'm anything but the optimistic type. But I strongly believe we've built a team that will be far better than any Bulldogs team we've seen in the last few years.

Well Geelong's through the guts game was supposed to be the epitomine of modern football and which we are trying to copy. I hope we are not passe. As for Collingwood they are still playing around the flanks as they have done all throughout the Malthouse era. Applying forward line pressure is something they have learned from St Kilda as many other teams other than us have done this season. But they are doing it better. Loose type forwards with talent like Medhurst, Anthony, Fraser and Davis find it hard to get a game with them anymore. Every team knows their game plan but can't break it down because they now usually field 22 disciplined players who follow instructions. Thats why lesser name players like Macaffer, Blair, Dawes and L. Brown get a game in the forward line. As I said, 90% of the game is played in the head and thats nothing new.

Yes, St. Kilda's example is a tale of caution.

Melbourne is really lacking a gorilla to protect some of our younger guys and stars at the moment. We need some sort of part animal in the team to intimidate opponents when required. This is still a short-term thing but it's really obvious, I think.

I really hope DB has it in him, as I like him. But we may find in a year or two, if things don't continue on the ascent, we may need to chase someone like Paul Roos.
