Junior's career may not yet be over according to The Australian - Carlton is circling James McDonald who has a bit of run left in those ageing legs.

OMG! There's one from left field.

Good luck to him though, and he's clearly still good enough to go around again. Could be another in the long line of Melb > Carlton trades. Not quite up there with Barass's move, but not far off it!

It would break my heart to see this man in another uniform. He deserves to play if he wants to, so good luck to Junior. I will really struggle to cheer against the guy. He really is a fav son of the MFC.

Staggering really that the Blues would consider recruiting a 34 year old. Carlton certainly must have an interesting mindset.

Great news for Junior if he wants to go on and good luck to him. He would make a great role model for the Blues' younger brigade but, by the same token, will be keeping one of them out of the team if the move works and his body stands up for another season.

Will be SHATTERED if he runs around in that uniform next year!

Agree Jack - I think the Blues are progressing but they're still some way off flag contention - this level of expectation would be a worrying development for Ratten.

Please take no offence Junior but the Blues must have something in the water they drink. Draft a 34 yo ???

Ratten & Co are officially members of the raving Looney party !!

mods might want to consider shifting this to the Trade forum !

I couldnt stomach a true champion of ours running around for the Blues. Lets hope it doesnt eventuate.Whats with the Blues poaching our players?

Give him a guernsey in our football dept and he would jump at it.Retain him that is what I say!

Surely not...

I would hope that Junior moves into a coaching role of some sort with the club.

I suppose it is similar to the Robbo scenario a couple of years ago when he felt he had more left in him.

Apparently a few clubs have inquired as to Junior becoming an assistant.

On SEN they had his manager on who advised they are talking about it. I think Junior would feel he can go around again. It would be devastating to watch him in those colors.

I still back the club in their decision, if I was James unless Carlton were a flag chance, why bother? He will protect Judd & Murphy etc well, but Carlton have many issues around the field. Not just in the middle.

Greg Swann has just flat out denied it on SEN. Says they have no interest in him as a player or assistant coach.

First he has heard of it. Not happening.

Found it rather humorous as well.

this can't happen and i doubt it will....surely the blues are not that stupid to be drafting a 34 year old(no offense junior). All this would do is delay the development of their juniors in the midfield

On my way into work, Junior's manager, Tom Petoro I think it was mentioned how this had come to him. He stated that Junior was overseas on holidays and that he was talking with him about, that he definitely felt he had another year or two in him. If that is what he wanted to do.

Swann says the opposite.

I believe Tom on this one.

I'd wish him well if he decided to go on but why would the blues risk it again?

If he gets injured (like someone else we all know) he is bound to be out for weeks rather than days at this stage of his career.

There is no doubt our FD did the sums and worked out he has about 14 to 15 games left in him over a couple of seasons at most.

I love Junior, as we all do, but when you miss around half a dozen weeks with a standard hamstring injury, your time is up. Champion bloke. Champion player. But Carlton, or anyone, would be making a mistake if they picked him up.

Meh.

Won't happen.

He may take an assistant coaching role however.

I practically expect it of most champion players when they retire and it is often at a different club so they can get a fresh viewpoint.

Junior has just come out and said he's more chance of playing FF at the doggies than........

And of course we'dtake anything Swan would say to the bank!!!!

Ahhh gotta love this time of year ... So many stories .. So few true .. Then the deals no one sees coming . Just can't see it happening .. Good for Junior if so but spoils his one club thing. Hell it's only footy.

Good luck to all .. Carn Dees :)

+1

Re-post this under the Cameron Bruce thread at the end of season 2011 and I'll give you another +1!!!

I think he'll come to his senses and retire. He's not going to play for Carlton. And there's absolutely no way in hell he would ever play a game in that midfield.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
